Review 256 : Mortuary – The Old Skull Reign – English

Mortuary, french Thrash/Death veterans unleash The Old Skull Reign without warning.

Already recorded as bonus tracks for their latest full-length, Jean-Noël Verbecq (bass, Degraved), Patrick Germonville (vocals), Alexis Baudin (guitar), Yohann Voirin (drums) and Bastien Legras (guitar) gathered three songs for this EP.

Under The Cross, the first song, directly hits us with a very fast and energetic Old School Thrash Metal basis. The band remains true to its reputation and offers a solid rhythmic full of piercing leads and a… surprising final part! Drowned into the Unreal stays in the same dynamic, but with a more greasy and heavier sound. Death Metal roots are palpable with a very groovy part in the middle of the song. Third and last track, Mummified for Eternity is the catchiest song, between pure aggression, fast violence and powerful screams. Long solo parts lead us to the end of the song and of the EP as well.

Even if fans already know them, Mortuary delivers three excellent songs composed between sharp Thrash and powerful Death Metal. The Old Skull Reign allows us to wait for their new album in peace.
