Review 463 : Demon King – The Final Tyranny – English

Demon King reveals itself with a first EP.

Created in 2019 by Matt Brown (guitar/vocals, ex-Enfold Darkness) after a musical hiatus, he recruits Malcolm Pugh (bass, Inferi, A Loathing Requiem, ex-Entheos) and Jack Blackburn (drums, ex-Inferi, ex-Enfold Darkness, ex-Vital Remains), and the trio begin to compose The Final Tyranny.

The EP is built with four tracks of a Technical Blackened Death Metal with sometimes Melodic and Prog influences, which it is hard to resist. Since Tyrannical Reign of the Deceiver, the first song, the band goes full speed, offering sharp riffs, a killer blast and visceral vocals. The rhythmic wears epic leads without slowing down, then Invoking the Spirit of Chaos is next, adding a part of shadows to the band’s music thanks to its introduction. The fast-paced riff storm quickly comes back with some screamed backing vocals, and still this unchanging rage and this dreadful velocity. A worrying and majestic break strikes on the end, tempering the rhythmic’s passion, then Transmutation of the Artilect comes to lacerate us again. The song oscillates between super fast parts, aggressive melodies and an impressive ambience that picks into Symphonic Black Metal as well as the musician’s mastery. This lead guitar battle throws us to The Watcher, Wreathed In Flame, the last song. Melting violent riffs, dark whispers, bloody harmonics and their crushing basis, the band only takes rare breaks, in order to catch us in this whirlwind of strength. Quiet parts are also captivating, because they participate to the oppressing ambience the band cultivates until the end.

Demon King makes sensational entrance with this first EP. The Final Tyranny offers in less than twenty minutes a riff tornado as violent as fast and dark, that sail into several perfectly melt influences.
