Review 509 : Baest – Necro Sapiens – English

Baest’s cage was opened.

Created in 2015 by Simon Olsen (vocals, ex-Livløs), Svend Karlsson (guitar), Mattias Melchiorsen (bass), Lasse Revsbech (guitar) and Sebastian Abildsten (drums) in Denmark, the band presents us today Necro Sapiens, their third album.

What do you expect from Baest? With their Old School to the core Death Metal, the band comes to offer nine fat songs after an introduction named The Forge. Genesis melts everything we like into Death Metal: greasy voice, hooking harmonics and a thick rhythm part. But far from being generic, the band adds its own touch, and I don’t need more to be caught by their sound, which continues with Necro Sapiens. A fast-paced tempo, dissonant leads and above all this rage that settles in, giving more personality to the song. Leads are not diminished, because they offer an interesting melodic and dissonant side. We have the same elements on Czar, accompanied by an impressive introductive howling. The song fully smells the end of the eighties, but still includes more mystical and oppressive parts.
If you remained impervious until now, just wait for Abattoir to strike at full force. Between those tearing leads and this crushing rhythmic, the song assaults us and steps over us, like Goregasm, a song with a stabbing intro part. Riffs accelerate and get filled with a dark and catchy energy driven by sharp leads, then Towers of Suffocation falls upon us. The song is impressive and quite technical, there is no doubt that this one will begin the biggest crowd movements on stage. Purification Through Mutilation is the perfect song to headbang on! Steady, catchy and massive, the song will probably break many necks, just like Meathook Massacre, one of the most violent tracks of the album. Be ready to be blown away, until Sea of Vomit finishes us off. An impressive drum introduction, joined by the other instruments for a wave of pure Old School Death Metal full of breaks.

Baest is absolutely unleashed. Whether the band’s roots are anchored in Old School Death Metal, their many influences allow them to explore a larger specter to permit Necro Sapiens to be one of the best releases of the year.
