Review 552 : Ildskær – Paa dækket kalder de døde – English

Ildskær comes back to finish its story.

Created in 2020 in Denmark by Garðarsson (all instruments, Í Myrkri) and Skóggangr (vocals/guitar, Í Myrkri, ex-Shamash…), the band releases an album the same year, then Paa dækket kalder de døde, an EP, at the beginning of 2021.

The EP pays tribute to the battle of Sjællands Odde, where Denmark and Norway were routed by the British fleet. Illustrated by the danish painter H. P. C. Dahm, sung in old danish and inspired by the poem Terje Vigen from Henrik Ibsens and lines from the historian N.F.S. Grundtvig, the band wants its art to be as true and respectful as possible. The introduction, a reinterpretation of the danish musician C.E.F. Weyse’s melody named Hid I Piger Smaa, throws us into a warlike and ice cold Black Metal. If Natten er Tyst offers raw and piercing violence, some more heady and melancholic parts slip into the bloody riffs. Blodrøde Bølger offers epic and more distant sonorities, taking advantage of an Old School and ambient sound to increase those airy riffs and this raw discourse. The band welcomes Simon N. (Wulfaz) for Den Sidste Orlogsmand, the last song, with a worrying introduction that finally drops us on a haunting rhythmic, and that ends with the introductive melody, after a long seizing song.

Ildskær’s historic universe is cold and realistic, making Paa dækket kalder de døde a captivating and epic story. The band’s sound is raw, which perfectly fits to the theme, offering an original history lesson.
