Review 544 : Marasmus – Necrotic Overlord – English

Six years after their last album, Marasmus are back.

Created in 2007, the american band composed of Devon Ferrera (vocals), Andy Nagorski (guitar/vocals), Brandon Culligan (guitar), Trynt Kelly (drums, Unmerciful) and Ben Harvey (bass, Gourmand, ex-A Plague in Faith) offers us Necrotic Overlord.

The first observation we can make, is about the tempo that doesn’t change, or very little, over those ten songs, offering an unholy steamroller of Death Metal. The rhythmic is greasy and the curtain of blast beats picks into Old School tones, while riffs offer us violent and putrid melodies. We find dissonant harmonics like on Universal Deceit or seizing leads for Appeasing Thanos, as well as dark sonorities for Voices of the Wailing Deceased, opening a bit more the band’s universe. It may reassure you to know that epic sounds will also be part on the bill for this song, while we go to majestic tones for Archaic Burial Rites, that creates a contrast with the raw Death Metal from Insurrection or Ectoplasmic Violation, the first song. Darker influences can be heard on Pagan Orgies to Human Sacrifice, a song where fast notes reign supreme, opening the gate for a ghostly solo before Forsaken Graves of Infant Kings, a worrying song, but as consistent that plays on sharp harmonics.

Consistent rhythmics of Marasmus will please without a doubt to Old School sounds lovers, but Necrotic Overlord will also allow newcomers in Death Metal to blend into those putrid and unholy sounds.
