Review 1436 : Spider God – Fly in the Trap – English

Let the mystery of Spider God shroud you.

Since 2020, the project of the English musician G (instruments/vocals) multiplies releases. After a first independent time, the project delivers a first album at the beginning of 2022 on Repose Records, then Fly in the Trap, its second album, which is about the disappearance of Elisa Lam, a well-known mystery in the United States.

The Fifty Second Murderer doesn’t waste a single second to bury us under an as melodic as aggressive rhythmic with Black Metal roots coupled with ghostly vocals. The heady and sharp leads are perfectly melted with the song’s solid and raw basis before being adorned with Thrash influences on Traces of Hubris, a fast tempo composition which easily plays with soaring harmonics. The sound becomes more and more airy, creating a contrast with aggressive vocals just like on the abrasive A Thousand Lonely Spiders which sounds like a flood of raw rage with Old School influences. Once again, some more straightforward riffs are integrated to the catchy and ice-cold patterns before The Hermit offers some mysterious leads. The rhythmic will eventually explode to offer a more aggressive basis while wearing majestic gothic accents, then Labyrinth of Hallways reveals some melancholy which makes us move forward in the haunting darkness while creating a place for a worrying clean vocal. Melodies are also sharper while creating a contrast with the soft tones, then Flies in the Trap, the eponymous track, goes back to pure aggressiveness and unhealthy saturation. An unexpected acceleration will return to Melodic Black Metal roots, and the track literally throws us into Hiroshima Mon Amour, a catchy composition which also reveals some colder and darker tones. The track skillfully couples unleashed screams with cold leads just like on the long Invisible Light, which draws its inspirations from the Swedish scene while adding some airy samples with Folk roots to close the album.

The sound of Spider God is very raw. But Fly in the Trap has some diversified influences, such as samples and cold leads, making this album a mysterious and inspired sound block that should not be missed.
