Hello and first of all, thank you very much for your time! Could you please introduce yourself and the band EYES without using the usual musical labels?
Søren (guitar): Hello, I’m Søren, I play guitar and do the occasional backing vocals. In EYES we make wiuwiu-kinda-guitar-music with big boom-boom drums, vroom-vroom bass-parts, and pterodactyl-screechy sing-a-longs.
How do you personally link the name EYES to the band’s music identity?
Søren: The name was found before I joined the band but I like that it’s short and to the point – kind of fits with what we’re doing musically and with our songwriting.
The band’s latest album, Congratulations, came out last year. How do you feel about it? How is the feedback?
Søren: We feel very good about it, otherwise we would not have put it out. Feedback has been very good as well, we are very grateful for all the year-end lists that it has shown up on and all the kind words (even the not-so kind-words) people have thrown after the album and song – it’s all fuel for us.
How would you sum Congratulations’ identity up in only three words?
Søren: BEST. ALBUM. EVER. (Rikke Emilie List from Konvent came up with this answer)
How did the creation process happen for Congratulations? Did you notice some changes, compared to the previous works?
Søren: The creative process for this album was pretty similar to our previous album Underperformer. Everything written in the practice space, very democratic and hands-on. What changed slightly was how we wrote, as we found our “voice” to be more carved out compared to previously; we knew what we were after.
What about the artwork, what were the guidelines and how do they fit with the music you created?
Søren: We gave very specific guidelines to the artwork-master Jon Gotlev. He followed them perfectly but also incorporated many of his own ideas. We had a kind of 1970’s aesthetic in our heads which it didn’t end up being explicitly, but there are nods to that within the artwork.
There are a few guests on the album, Benjamin Clemens, The Ocular Celebration Choir and Jon Gotlev. Who are they, how did you reach them, and how did you ask them to participate in the album?
Søren: Benjamin Clemens does backing vocals on Congratulations! and Jon Gotlev has some gnarly parts on Tearjerker. We have played shows with, and are big fans of these guys and their bands, SYL (Benjamin) and Hiraki (Jon), so we wanted to have their voices on the album. The Ocular Celebration Choir is us plus the producer of the album, Jacob Bredahl – he also currently sings in the band Riverhead and plays guitar in Smertegrænsens Toldere (plus he records all the bands in Denmark). How do you find the balance between all the band’s musical inspirations? Where do you usually find your inspiration to create music?
Søren: We usually just try to come up with some guitar-parts that sound cool and that we all like and then build a track around that. Creation can come in all kinds of situations – even just trying to do the most stupid thing possible on your instrument. That usually ends up pretty cool.
Do you have a favorite song on this album? Or maybe the hardest one to achieve for the album?
Søren: They’re all bangers! There’s one that we all found hard to achieve but we’ll never tell you which one!
Do you think you improved yourself as a musician and songwriter with this new record?
Søren: For sure, we polished off our songwriting and will continue to do for our next songs and albums.
While EYES mainly played Denmark for the last few years, you also had a European run last summer between Norway, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Poland and Sweden. How was it?
Søren: It was really cool to finally play somewhere else than Denmark and Norway – playing Bukta in Norway, Mystic Festival in Poland, Wacken in Germany, and Hellfest in France were extremely cool experiences for us. We’ll always remember those shows.
The band will finally embark on its first European tour alongside Death Goals. How do you feel about it?
Søren: We are super excited for those shows! We’ll do some worthwhile shows and promise to give 110%.
There are two shows in France scheduled, one in Besançon, and one in Paris. How do you feel coming back to France after playing Hellfest? What can we expect of those shows?
Søren: We’re looking forward to coming back in a more intimate setting – the Warzone-stage at Hellfest was huge! It’ll be our first club-shows in France so we’ll do our best to demolish those venues alongside Death Goals.
Are there any musicians or artists you would like to collaborate with? Whether it is for one song, or maybe more.
Søren: Absolutely! We’re already in talks with a singer that we all think have a cool vibe and could be a cool addition to our sound – stay tuned for that collaboration, haha… Personally I think it would be cool to collaborate with artists like The Body, Ellen Allien, or Danny Brown.
If you had to organize a concert for Congratulations’ release show, which bands would you love to play with? I let you create a poster with EYES and three other bands!
Søren: (We actually already did, with Galge and Smertegrænsens Toldere as support buuuuut) Would be cool to invite Better Lovers, Show Me The Body, and Chat Pile – now that would be a cool show!
Last and funny question : which dish would you compare EYES’ music with?
Søren: A freshly made simple pizza – with all the week’s leftovers thrown around it!

Bonjour et tout d’abord, merci beaucoup pour votre temps ! Pourrais-tu te présenter et présenter le groupe EYES sans utiliser les étiquettes musicales habituelles ?
Søren (guitare) : Bonjour, je m’appelle Søren, je joue de la guitare et je fais occasionnellement des chœurs. Dans EYES, nous faisons de la musique wiuwiu-truc-guitare-musique avec une grosse batterie boom-boom, des parties de basse vroom-vroom, et des paroles-qui-font-cri-de-ptérodactyles.
Comment associes-tu personnellement le nom EYES à l’identité musicale du groupe ?
Søren : Le nom a été trouvé avant que je ne rejoigne le groupe, mais j’aime le fait qu’il soit court et direct, et qu’il corresponde à ce que nous faisons musicalement et à notre écriture.
Le dernier album du groupe, Congratulations, est sorti l’année dernière. Qu’en pensez-vous ? Quels sont les retours ?
Søren : Nous en sommes très satisfaits, sinon nous ne l’aurions pas sorti. Nous sommes très reconnaissants pour toutes les listes de fin d’année sur lesquelles il est apparu et pour tous les mots gentils (et même ceux qui ne le sont pas) que les gens ont prononcés à l’égard de l’album et des chansons – c’est du carburant pour nous.
Comment résumerais-tu l’identité de Congratulations en trois mots ?

Comment s’est déroulé le processus de création de Congratulations ? As-tu remarqué des changements par rapport aux albums précédents ?
Søren : Le processus de création de cet album a été assez similaire à celui de notre précédent album, Underperformer. Tout a été écrit dans l’espace de répétition, de manière très démocratique et pratique. Ce qui a légèrement changé, c’est notre façon d’écrire, car nous avons trouvé que notre « voix » était mieux définie qu’auparavant ; nous savions ce que nous cherchions.
Qu’en est-il de l’artwork, quelles étaient les lignes directrices et comment s’accordent-elles avec la musique que vous avez créée ?
Søren : Nous avons donné des directives très précises au maître d’œuvre Jon Gotlev. Il les a suivies à la lettre, mais a aussi incorporé beaucoup de ses propres idées. Nous avions en tête une sorte d’esthétique des années 1970 qui n’a pas été explicite, mais il y a des clins d’œil dans l’artwork.
Il y a quelques invités sur l’album, Benjamin Clemens, The Ocular Celebration Choir et Jon Gotlev. Qui sont-ils, comment les avez-vous contactés et comment leur avez-vous demandé de participer à l’album ?
Søren : Benjamin Clemens fait les chœurs sur Congratulations! et Jon Gotlev a quelques parties noueuses sur Tearjerker. Nous avons fait des concerts avec eux et nous sommes de grands fans de ces gars et de leurs groupes, SYL (Benjamin) et Hiraki (Jon), donc nous voulions que leurs voix figurent sur l’album. The Ocular Celebration Choir, c’est nous et le producteur de l’album, Jacob Bredahl – il chante aussi dans le groupe Riverhead et joue de la guitare dans Smertegrænsens Toldere (et il enregistre tous les groupes au Danemark). Jetez-y un coup d’œil !
Comment trouvez-vous l’équilibre entre toutes les inspirations musicales du groupe ? Où trouvez-vous habituellement l’inspiration pour créer de la musique ?
Søren : En général, nous essayons juste de trouver des parties de guitare qui sonnent bien et que nous aimons tous, puis nous construisons un morceau autour de ça. La création peut se manifester dans toutes sortes de situations – même en essayant de faire la chose la plus stupide possible avec son instrument. En général, ça finit bien.
As-tu une chanson préférée sur cet album ? Ou peut-être la plus difficile à réaliser pour l’album ?
Søren : Ce sont tous des bangers ! Il y en a une que nous avons tous trouvée difficile à réaliser, mais nous ne vous dirons jamais laquelle !
Penses-tu t’être amélioré en tant que musicien et compositeur avec ce nouvel album ?
Søren : C’est sûr, nous avons peaufiné notre écriture et nous continuerons à le faire pour nos prochaines chansons et nos prochains albums.
Alors que EYES a principalement joué au Danemark ces dernières années, vous avez également fait une tournée européenne l’été dernier entre la Norvège, l’Allemagne, la France, les Pays-Bas, la Pologne et la Suède. Comment cela s’est-il passé ?
Søren : C’était vraiment cool de jouer ailleurs qu’au Danemark et en Norvège – jouer à Bukta en Norvège, au Mystic Festival en Pologne, au Wacken en Allemagne, et au Hellfest en France ont été des expériences très cool pour nous. Nous nous souviendrons toujours de ces concerts.
Le groupe va enfin se lancer dans sa première tournée européenne aux côtés de Death Goals. Qu’en pensez-vous ?
Søren : Nous sommes très excités par ces concerts ! Nous ferons des concerts qui en valent la peine et nous promettons de nous donner à 110%.
Il y a deux concerts prévus en France, un à Besançon et un à Paris. Comment vous sentez-vous de revenir en France après avoir joué au Hellfest ? Que pouvons-nous attendre de ces concerts ?
Søren : Nous sommes impatients de revenir dans un cadre plus intime – la scène Warzone du Hellfest était énorme ! Ce sera notre premier concert dans un club en France, donc nous ferons de notre mieux pour démolir ces salles aux côtés de Death Goals.
Y a-t-il des musiciens ou des artistes avec lesquels vous aimeriez collaborer ? Que ce soit pour une chanson, ou peut-être plus.
Søren : Absolument ! Nous sommes déjà en pourparlers avec un chanteur dont nous pensons tous qu’il a une bonne ambiance et qu’il pourrait être un bon ajout à notre son – restez à l’écoute pour cette collaboration, haha… Personnellement, je pense que ce serait cool de collaborer avec des artistes comme The Body, Ellen Allien, ou Danny Brown.
Si vous deviez organiser un concert pour la sortie de Congratulations, avec quels groupes aimeriez-vous jouer ? Je te laisse créer une affiche avec EYES et trois autres groupes !
