Review 2817 : SoulBreaker – Rising From Insanity – English

SoulBreaker unveils its first EP!

Rising From Insanity is the culmination of three years’ work by Kévin Salvaterra (guitar) and Aurélien Di Scala (guitar/vocals, ex-Varkodya), joined in 2023 by Romain Schmitt (bass) and Nathan Sanders (drums, Scurrilous).

After a few moments of silence interrupted by eerie noises, Rotting Soul offers us a sound of pure vindictive Thrash, sometimes infused with Death on the thickest parts, and featuring screaming vocal parts that reinforce the Old School feel. There are also a few sharp leads to complete the catchy groove, but the track is long enough to allow for some interesting acceleration, as on the final before moving on to From Sweat to Blood, a shorter and more straightforward composition that doesn’t hesitate to burst into flames without warning to strike more intensely. It’s hard not to shake your skull, especially during the double-kick parts, then Bad Reflect temporizes the assault with its introduction before resuming with its jerky rhythm to which the solo is naturally grafted, bringing piercing heavy touches, announcing the heavier break. The aggressive end leads into Rising From Insanity, which barely gives us a moment’s respite before charging in at full power, offering an unhealthy dissonance on the slower passages, and bringing this first chapter to a deft close.

If you miss the 80s’ and 90s’ Thrash Metal, you can trust SoulBreaker with your eyes closed! Rising From Insanity sweeps us away in its flood of violence, leaving our necks wagging to the sound of their bloody Old School riffs with disconcerting ease!
