Quelques questions au groupe Peace of Mind à propos de la sortie de leur deuxième album, Blood is the Price.
Bonjour et tout d’abord, merci beaucoup de nous accorder votre temps ! Comment présenteriez-vous le groupe Peace of Mind sans utiliser d’étiquettes musicales telles que “Hardcore” ?
Peace of Mind : Merci beaucoup de nous recevoir, nous apprécions vraiment cette opportunité ! Peace of Mind est composé de quatre personnes qui ont chacune leur propre parcours musical, mais ce que nous avons tous en commun, c’est notre amour pour la musique intense et énergique. Même si nous venons d’horizons très différents, nous avons finalement trouvé un langage commun dans ce son. Après 10 ans, c’est devenu quelque chose qui nous est très cher à tous. En gros, nous sommes un groupe d’amis très soudés qui s’encouragent mutuellement à se développer, non seulement en tant que musiciens, mais aussi en tant que personnes. Nous sommes tous déterminés à tirer le meilleur parti de nos instruments et de nous-mêmes, et c’est cette ambition commune qui constitue le fondement de ce groupe.
Le groupe fête son 10e anniversaire cette année. Vous souvenez-vous comment vous avez trouvé le nom Peace of Mind ? Quel est le lien avec la musique que vous jouez ?
Peace of Mind : Oui, c’est un peu fou de penser que ça fait déjà 10 ans, haha. On aimait juste la façon dont ça sonnait, et c’est comme ça qu’on a trouvé le nom Peace of Mind. Mais avec le temps, il a pris beaucoup plus de sens. Pour nous, il s’agit d’offrir aux gens un espace où ils peuvent tout laisser sortir, que ce soit en chantant avec nous, en criant les paroles ou simplement en se déchaînant dans la fosse. Cette libération, ce sentiment d’appartenance et de connexion, c’est ça Peace of Mind. Depuis le début des années 2020, surtout depuis l’arrivée de notre batteur Paddi, notre son est devenu beaucoup plus lourd et agressif. Au premier abord, le nom Peace of Mind peut sembler ne pas correspondre à l’intensité de notre musique, mais il reflète vraiment ce que nous défendons : l’unité, la communauté et la création d’un espace sûr pour les personnes qui ont l’impression de ne pas trouver leur place ailleurs. C’est ça, le Hardcore, et c’est ça, Peace of Mind pour nous.
En septembre, Peace of Mind sortira son deuxième album, intitulé Blood is the Price. Qu’en pensez-vous ? Avez-vous déjà reçu des commentaires ?
Peace of Mind : Jusqu’à présent, les commentaires ont été très positifs. Il semble que les gens apprécient la direction que nous avons prise. Il est clair que nous avons évolué en tant que groupe au cours des dernières années, nous avons beaucoup appris sur la musique et nous avons essayé différentes façons de faire les choses. Si nous avons reçu des critiques, elles concernaient davantage le son général des chansons, ce qui était en quelque sorte notre intention. Nous avons choisi le studio d’enregistrement The Pit pour une raison précise, à contre-courant des productions propres et modernes qui étaient susceptibles de plaire ou de déplaire à certains de nos auditeurs.
Comment résumeriez-vous l’identité de Blood is the Price en trois mots seulement ?
Peace of Mind : Intransigeant, brut, accrocheur.
Comment s’est déroulé le processus de création au sein du groupe ? Y a-t-il eu des différences ou une évolution par rapport aux précédents albums ?
Peace of Mind : Le processus d’écriture en lui-même n’a pas changé, mais les possibilités musicales que nous avons exploitées et notre audace à expérimenter ont été très différentes cette fois-ci. En 2023, notre batteur a quitté le groupe, et pendant quelques mois, nous avons donné des concerts avec des remplaçants. Comme mentionné précédemment, Patrick va officiellement rejoindre le groupe à la batterie en 2024. Il est avec nous en tant que musicien de session depuis 2015, il fait donc partie du groupe depuis le début. Il nous a vraiment aidés à évoluer en tant que groupe, tant au niveau de la composition que du style musical, c’est pourquoi nous avons décidé d’enregistrer l’album de cette manière. De plus, nous avons tous beaucoup évolué sur le plan personnel et musical au cours des dernières années, ce qui a eu un impact important sur l’album. Nous avons l’impression d’avoir enfin trouvé notre son.
Le son du groupe est clairement ancré dans le Hardcore et les thèmes vengeurs. Quels groupes citeriez-vous comme vos principales influences ? Vos influences ont-elles évolué avec le temps ?
Peace of Mind : Comme mentionné précédemment, nous venons tous d’horizons musicaux différents, donc bien sûr, nos influences sont assez diverses. Il y a toujours des recoupements, surtout en ce qui concerne l’énergie lourde et agressive qui nous a réunis au départ. Nous aimons tous des groupes comme Hatebreed, All Out War et Terror, c’est certain – c’est de là que nous venons tous. Leur intensité, leur message et leur approche sans compromis ont vraiment marqué notre style Hardcore. Mais nous avons toujours essayé d’aller au-delà de la simple reproduction d’une formule. Nous voulons nous exprimer artistiquement et trouver notre propre voix au sein du genre, même si cela conduit parfois à des désaccords créatifs au sein du groupe – haha. Mais, à mon avis, cette tension nous pousse aussi à évoluer, et nos influences ont naturellement changé au fil du temps, à mesure que nous grandissions en tant qu’individus et en tant que groupe.
As-tu une chanson préférée sur Blood is the Price ? Ou peut-être celle qui a été la plus difficile à réaliser pour l’album.
Peace of Mind : Je pense que la chanson titre, Blood is the Price, est ma préférée. C’est un peu un mélange d’ancien et de nouveau, tu vois ? En Allemagne, les gens disent qu’elle procure cette sensation Hardcore spécifique à Peace Of Mind. Je l’ai entendu dire plusieurs fois haha. Les guitares plus rapides et le rythme de batterie spécifique rappellent les anciens jours, tandis que tout le reste ressort comme quelque chose que nous n’avions jamais fait auparavant (je pense notamment à la double grosse caisse et aux blast beats). Je ne dirais pas que c’était le plus difficile à réaliser, mais le fait que Jem de Speed ait participé à ce morceau l’a rendu spécial pour nous.
Où trouvez-vous votre inspiration pour créer de la musique ?
Peace of Mind : Au départ, le Hardcore était un moyen pour les gens d’évacuer leurs émotions et de faire face à la vie en général. Pour nous, faire de la musique est une façon de gérer nos propres vies, à laquelle tout le monde peut s’identifier. Nous sommes tous dans le même bateau chaque jour quand il s’agit de livrer des colis. Nous écrivons de la musique et donnons des concerts pour nous exprimer et, surtout, pour encourager les gens à nous rejoindre et à trouver du réconfort, de la joie et un sentiment d’appartenance à une communauté. La vie est un processus sans fin qui nous donne envie de parler de ce que nous vivons, et probablement beaucoup d’autres personnes aussi, chaque jour. De 9 h à 17 h, putain.
Pensez-vous avoir progressé en tant que musicien/compositeur avec ce nouvel album ?
Peace of Mind : Je pense que nous sommes tous d’accord pour dire qu’au cours des deux dernières années, nous avons trouvé le son que nous recherchions et que la plupart d’entre nous ont atteint un nouveau niveau de compréhension musicale en tant que groupe. Nous nous entendons vraiment bien en tant que musiciens, tant en studio que sur scène. Nous sommes ravis d’avoir trouvé le moyen de mieux communiquer à travers notre musique. Taylor Young nous a également aidés sur certains points pendant l’enregistrement de l’album. C’est un producteur et un ingénieur du son formidable, et surtout un type génial qui maîtrise parfaitement la structure et la dynamique musicales. Nous ne le remercierons jamais assez !
Je n’ai encore jamais eu l’occasion d’assister à un concert de Peace of Mind, comment vivez-vous un concert live de votre point de vue ? Avez-vous une routine avant ou après le concert ?
Peace of Mind : Nous abordons tous le jour du concert différemment. Patrick, notre batteur, est le seul d’entre nous à avoir une sorte de routine. Il est plus susceptible d’installer son matériel au bon moment et de faire peut-être quelques étirements. Les autres se détendent généralement et discutent avec toutes les personnes que nous avons appris à connaître au fil des ans. La plupart des concerts en Allemagne ressemblent davantage à des réunions de famille qu’à des concerts Hardcore classiques, alors nous essayons tous de profiter au maximum du moment et de donner le meilleur de nous-mêmes. Nous essayons également de convaincre les personnes qui ne sont pas particulièrement fans de Hardcore en leur montrant l’esprit et l’appel à l’action qui animent ce mouvement. Parce que le Hardcore, c’est une énergie incroyable, une énergie pure et concentrée qui explose en seulement 25 minutes, tu vois.
Le groupe a annoncé quelques concerts pour célébrer son 10e anniversaire cet été, mais aussi une tournée de onze dates en Europe et au Royaume-Uni. Comment vous préparez-vous pour cette tournée ? Comment établissez-vous la setlist ?
Peace of Mind : Les concerts du 10e anniversaire vont présenter des morceaux de toutes les époques de Peace of Mind jusqu’à présent. Nous avons également assoupli la structure habituelle de la setlist en ajoutant deux reprises à la liste, ce que nous n’avions pas fait depuis longtemps. Il s’agit des morceaux Eyes Adjust de Twitching Tongues et I Don’t Wanna Be Me de Type O Negative. Ils sont peut-être un peu inhabituels, mais le public les a beaucoup appréciés jusqu’à présent, haha. Nous ajouterons également des morceaux supplémentaires de l’album pour la tournée, nous devrons donc les répéter jusqu’à ce qu’ils soient parfaits. Mais tout cela devrait venir naturellement, car les nouveaux morceaux sont très agréables à jouer.
Vous accueillez trois invités sur l’album, Jem Siow (Speed), Emely Finke (Blossom Decay) et Gregor Leskey (Risk It). Comment les avez-vous contactés et leur avez-vous demandé de participer ? Aimeriez-vous faire d’autres collaborations à l’avenir ?
Peace of Mind : Ce sont tous de bons amis à nous à l’heure actuelle. Nous les avons simplement contactés pour voir s’ils avaient le temps, et heureusement, c’était le cas. Honnêtement, c’est probablement l’un des plus grands défis quand on vieillit : trouver le temps de réaliser ce genre de choses, surtout avec le décalage horaire avec l’Australie. Un grand merci à Jem ! Les collaborations ont toujours fait partie de la tradition Hardcore, et nous n’avons certainement pas l’intention de rompre avec cette tradition. Il y a tellement de voix talentueuses que nous apprécions et respectons profondément, comme Gregor de Risk It ! De plus, il y a peut-être une collaboration cachée quelque part dans l’album. Peut-être devinerez-vous où elle se trouve et de qui il s’agit ?
Qu’en est-il de la scène Metal et Hardcore française, y a-t-il des groupes que vous connaissez et appréciez ?
Peace of Mind : Un grand merci à Sorcerer, Surge of Fury, Headbussa, Cold Decay et Worst Doubt. Ces groupes occupent une place importante dans le Hardcore européen, et nous sommes très reconnaissants d’avoir pu partager la scène avec eux ces dernières années. C’était également formidable de faire connaître la scène européenne. Nous avons passé un excellent moment en France en avril dernier et nous reviendrons, c’est certain ! Et bien sûr, nous devons rendre hommage au meilleur groupe français : Kickback. Ils sont une grande source d’inspiration pour nous et ont été des pionniers de la scène Hardcore européenne et au-delà. Ils sont inimitables aujourd’hui !

A few questions to the band Peace of Mind about the release of their second full-length, Blood is the Price.
Hello and first of all, thank you very much for your time! How would you introduce the band Peace of Mind without using the musical labels, such as “Hardcore”?
Peace of Mind: Thanks so much for having us – we really appreciate the opportunity! Peace of Mind is made up of four people who each have their own musical background, but what we all have in common is our love of intense and energetic music. Even though we come from all over the place, we’ve finally found a shared language in this sound. After 10 years, it’s become something that’s really close to all of us. Basically, we’re a close-knit bunch of friends who encourage each other to develop – not just as musicians, but as people too. We’re all driven to get the absolute best out of our instruments and ourselves, and that shared ambition is what gives this band its foundation.
The band celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, do you remember how you came out with the name Peace of Mind? How do you link it to the music you play?
Peace of Mind: Yeah, it’s kind of wild to think it’s been 10 years already, haha. We just liked how it sounded, and that’s how we came up with the name Peace of Mind. But over time, it’s come to mean a lot more. For us, it’s about giving people a space to let everything out – whether it’s singing along, screaming the lyrics with us, or just losing it in the pit. That release, that sense of connection and belonging – that’s peace of mind, right there. Since the early 2020s, especially with our drummer Paddi joining, our sound has got a lot heavier and more aggressive. At first, the name Peace of Mind might not seem to match the intensity of our music, but it’s really about what we stand for: unity, community, and creating a safe space for people who feel like they don’t quite fit in anywhere else. That’s what hardcore is all about, and that’s what Peace of Mind means to us.
In September, Peace of Mind will release its second full-length, called Blood is the Price. How do you feel about it? Do you already have any feedback?
Peace of Mind: The feedback so far has been really positive. It seems like people are pretty cool with the direction we’ve been going in. It’s clear that we’ve grown as a band over the past few years, we’ve learned a lot more about music and we’ve tried out different ways of doing things. If we did get any criticism, it was more about the overall sound of the songs, which was kind of the idea. We chose The Pit Recording Studio for a reason, going against the grain of the clean and modern productions that were expected to be liked or disliked by some of our listeners.
How would you sum Blood is the Price’s identity up in only three words?
Peace of Mind: Uncompromising, raw, catchy.
How did the creation process happen in the band? Were there any differences or evolution compared to the previous releases?
Peace of Mind: The writing process itself hasn’t changed, but the musical possibilities we used and our courage to experiment were very different this time. Back in 2023, our drummer quit the band, so for a few months we played shows with stand-ins. So, as mentioned before, Patrick‘s going to be joining us on drums officially in 2024. He’s been with us as a session musician since 2015, so he’s been part of the band right from the start. He’s really helped us to develop as a band, both in terms of songwriting and musical style, which is why we decided to record the album in the way we did. Also, we’ve all grown a lot personally and as musicians in the last few years, and that’s had a big impact on the album. We feel like we’ve finally found our sound.
The band’s sound is definitely anchored in Hardcore and vindictive thematics, which bands would you quote as your main influences? Did your influences evolve with time?
Peace of Mind: As mentioned before, we all come from different musical backgrounds, so of course, our influences are pretty diverse. There’s always some crossover, especially when it comes to the heavy, aggressive energy that brought us together in the first place. We all love bands like Hatebreed, All Out War, and Terror for sure – that’s where we all come from. Their intensity, message, and uncompromising delivery have really left their mark on us and our style of Hardcore. But we’ve always tried to do more than just follow the formula. We want to express ourselves artistically and find our own voice within the genre, even if that sometimes leads to creative disagreements within the band – haha. But, in my opinion, that tension also pushes us to evolve, and our influences have naturally shifted over time as we grow both as individuals and as a unit.
Do you have a favorite song on Blood is the Price? Or maybe the hardest one to achieve for the album.
Peace of Mind: I think the title track, Blood is the Price’ is my kind of favourite. It’s a bit of a mix of the old and the new, you know? Like, in Germany the people would say, that it gives you that Peace Of Mind Hardcore-Feeling. I heard that many times haha. The faster guitars and the specific drum beat on it are a good reminder of the old days, when everything in between sticks out as something we hadn’t done before (looking at you, double bass and blast beats). I wouldn’t say it was the hardest one to achieve, but the fact that we got Jem from Speed to feature on it definitely made this song special to us.
Where do you find your inspiration to create music?
Peace of Mind: The whole hardcore thing started out as a way for people to vent and deal with life in general. Making music for us is a way of processing our own lives that anyone can relate to. We’re all in the same boat every day when it comes to carrying out packages. We write music and play shows to express ourselves and, for the most part, to encourage people to join us and find relief, joy and a sense of community. Life is a never-ending process that makes us want to talk about what we and probably a lot of other people go through every day. From 9 to fucking 5.
Do you think you improved yourself as a musician/songwriter with this new record?
Peace of Mind: I think we – as a collective – can all agree that over the past two years, we nailed the sound we wanted and most of us found a new level of musical understanding as a group. We’ve really hit it off as musicians, both in the studio and on stage. We’re delighted that we’ve figured out how to communicate better through our music. Taylor Young also lent us a hand with a few things while we were recording the album. He’s an awesome producer and studio engineer, and overall a great guy with a strong grasp of musical structure and dynamics. We cannot thank him enough!
I never had the opportunity to attend a Peace of Mind show yet, how do you live a live concert from your point of view? Do you have some pre-show or post-show routine?
Peace of Mind: We all get to the day of a show differently. Patrick, our drummer, is the only one of us who has a kind of routine. He’s more likely to be setting up his stuff at the right time and maybe doing a bit of stretching. The others normally just chill and have a chat with all the people we’ve got to know over the years. Most of the shows in Germany feel more like family reunions than your typical hardcore show, so we all just try to enjoy our time as much as possible and perform to the best of our abilities. We also try to win over people who aren’t typically into Hardcore by showing them the spirit and call to action that lives within it. Because Hardcore is fucking energy, pure, concentrated energy that explodes live in just 25 minutes you know.
The band announced a few concerts to celebrate the 10th anniversary this summer, but also an eleven shows tour in Europe & UK. How do you get prepared for this tour? How do you build the setlist?
Peace of Mind: The 10th anniversary shows are going to feature stuff from every Peace of Mind era so far. We’ve also relaxed the usual set structure by adding two covers to the list, which we haven’t done in ages. The tracks in question are Eyes Adjust by Twitching Tongues and I Don’t Wanna Be Me by Type O Negative. They might be a bit unusual, but people loved them so far, haha. We’ll also bring extra songs from the album for the tour, so we’ll need to practice them until they’re perfect. The whole thing might come naturally, though, as the new songs are great to play.
You welcome three guests on the album, Jem Siow (Speed), Emely Finke (Blossom Decay) and Gregor Leskey (Risk It). How did you reach them and ask them to participate? Would you like to do more collaborations in the future?
Peace of Mind: These are all just good friends of ours at this point. We simply reached out to see if they had time – and luckily, they did. Honestly, that’s probably one of the biggest challenges as you get older: finding the time to make things like this happen – especially with the time difference to Australia. Special shoutout to Jem at this point! Having guest features has always been part of the Hardcore tradition, and we definitely don’t plan on breaking that. There are just too many talented voices out there we’re close to and respect deeply – like Gregor from Risk It! Also… there might be a hidden feature somewhere on the record – maybe you can guess where it is and who it might be?
What about the French Metal and Hardcore scene, are there any bands you know and like?
Peace of Mind: Big shoutout to Sorcerer, Surge of Fury, Headbussa, Cold Decay and Worst Doubt. These bands are a huge part of European hardcore, and we’ve been really grateful to share the stage with them over the past few years. It’s been great to spread the word about the European scene as well. We had a great time in France this April and will be back for sure! And of course, we have to give a big s/o to French’s finest: Kickback. They’re a huge inspiration for us and were trailblazers in the European Hardcore scene and beyond. Inimitable these days!
If I ask you to create a poster with Peace of Mind as headliner and three other bands for the release of Blood is the Price, which bands would you like to play with? Even unrealistic answers are accepted.
