Quelques questions à Jean-Ken Johnny, guitariste et co-vocaliste principal du groupe japonais MAN WITH A MISSION, à propos de la sortie de leur nouvel EP, XV e.p. Across the Globe.
Bonjour et tout d’abord, merci beaucoup de m’accorder un peu de ton temps ! Comment présenterais-tu le groupe MAN WITH A MISSION sans utiliser les étiquettes musicales telles que “Rock Alternatif” ou Metal Alternatif” ?
Jean-Ken Johnny (guitare/chant) : Un groupe de Rock hybride qui combine Pop, Punk, Electro, Rap et Alternatif. L’apparence d’une tête de loup et un corps humain.
Le groupe fête ses 15 ans cette année, te souviens-tu comment vous avez trouvé le nom MAN WITH A MISSION ? Quel est le lien avec la musique que vous jouez ?
Jean-Ken Johnny : Nous sommes une forme de vie artificielle, c’est pourquoi nous avons été baptisés ainsi dès le début. Je pense que ce nom convient bien à notre groupe, car notre musique exprime principalement les difficultés, les combats et la beauté que l’on rencontre tout au long de sa vie, ainsi que la quête de son sens.
En septembre, MAN WITH A MISSION sortira physiquement son nouvel EP, XV e.p. Across the Globe. Qu’en penses-tu ? Quels sont les retours jusqu’à présent ?
Jean-Ken Johnny : Je suis très fier et je trouve que les réactions sont excellentes. Merci à tous ceux qui l’ont écouté.
Comment résumeriez-vous l’identité de XV e.p. Across the Globe en trois mots seulement ?
Jean-Ken Johnny : “Bon boulot, mec !”
Comment s’est déroulé le processus de création des quatre nouveaux titres au sein du groupe ? Y a-t-il eu des différences ou des évolutions par rapport aux précédentes sorties ?
Jean-Ken Johnny : Comme il s’agissait d’un album anniversaire, nous avons essayé d’adopter une approche différente dans le processus de création, qui consistait à rassembler des idées en improvisant et en nous amusant simplement en studio. Nous avons également décidé d’apporter des ébauches d’idées de chaque membre cette fois-ci, car habituellement, c’est moi et le bassiste qui sommes les principaux compositeurs.
Le son du groupe est composé de nombreux éléments, issus du Metal, du Rock et d’un peu de Rap. Quels groupes citerais-tu comme vos principales influences ? Vos influences ont-elles évolué ?
Jean-Ken Johnny : Pour moi, ce serait Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against The Machine, Radiohead, etc. Je pense que les autres groupes qui ont influencé ce groupe sont Linkin Park, Fall out Boy, Incubus et peut-être MUSE.
As-tu une chanson préférée sur l’EP XV Across the Globe ? Ou peut-être la plus difficile à créer ?
Jean-Ken Johnny : J’ai pris beaucoup de plaisir à créer Vertigo. C’était un peu comme redécouvrir tous mes goûts musicaux.
Où trouvez-vous votre inspiration pour créer de la musique ?
Jean-Ken Johnny : Elle a sans aucun doute été nourrie par la musique des années 90 que j’ai écoutée et que j’écoute encore aujourd’hui, mais elle provient également de la musique actuelle, dans laquelle je trouve de la sympathie et de l’évolution. Elle provient aussi des bons films, des bonnes bandes dessinées ou des bons dessins animés que je découvre dans ma vie quotidienne.
Penses-tu avoir progressé en tant que musicien/compositeur avec ce nouvel album ?
Jean-Ken Johnny : Je l’espère.
Je n’ai encore jamais eu l’occasion d’assister à un concert de MAN WITH A MISSION, comment vis-tu un concert live de ton point de vue ? As-tu une routine avant ou après le concert ?
Jean-Ken Johnny : Je pense que la musique live est le meilleur moyen de ressentir l’émotion, la passion, l’éphémère et la beauté de la musique. Faire de la musique a ses moments magiques, mais la musique live amplifie cette magie au-delà de toute mesure. En ce qui concerne les rituels, je ne fais pas grand-chose, juste quelques étirements et échauffements des cordes vocales, etc.
Le groupe a annoncé une tournée en Europe et au Royaume-Uni en octobre. Comment vous préparez-vous pour cette tournée ? Comment établissez-vous la setlist ?
Jean-Ken Johnny : C’est principalement notre bassiste Kamikaze qui établit et propose la setlist, il nous demande si ça nous convient, parfois il apporte des modifications mineures, mais la plupart du temps, elle est parfaite telle quelle et on la valide.
Qu’en est-il de la scène Metal française, y a-t-il des groupes que vous connaissez et appréciez ? Ce n’est pas la première fois que vous jouez en France, avez-vous des souvenirs particuliers de vos précédents concerts ici ?
Jean-Ken Johnny : Pleymo, je connais un peu ten56, Landmvrks, Gojira. J’ai un ami qui vit en France et j’aime toujours y aller. La France est le tout premier pays où nous avons donné un concert en dehors du Japon. C’est toujours un plaisir.
Si je te demandais de créer une affiche avec MAN WITH A MISSION en tête d’affiche et trois autres groupes pour votre prochain album, avec quels groupes aimeriez-vous jouer la prochaine fois ? Même les réponses irréalistes sont acceptées.
Jean-Ken Johnny : Daft Punk, Pleymo, Phoenix. C’est trop ambitieux, mais ce sont les trois artistes français que j’admire le plus.
Dernière question amusante : à quel plat comparerais-tu la musique de MAN WITH A MISSION ?
Jean-Ken Johnny : Les ramen. Ils sont originaires d’un autre pays, mais ils ont évolué et sont devenus un genre à part entière. À première vue, on les considère comme un fast-food facile à consommer, mais une fois qu’on les goûte, on peut sentir la chimie et la belle combinaison de chaque ingrédient.

A few questions to Jean-Ken Johnny, guitarist and co-lead vocalist for the Japanese band MAN WITH A MISSION about the release of their new EP, XV e.p. Across the Globe.
Hello and first of all, thank you very much for your time! How would you introduce the band MAN WITH A MISSION without using the musical labels, such as “Alternative Rock” or “Alternative Metal”?
Jean-Ken Johnny (guitar/vocals): Hybrid Rock band performing music combined with Pop, Punk, Electro, Rap, Alternative. Appearance with the head of a wolf and the body of a human being.
The band celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, do you remember how you came out with the name MAN WITH A MISSION? How do you link it to the music you play?
Jean-Ken Johnny: We are an artificial life form so we were named as this from the beginning. I guess it fits as a band name as well for our music is mainly about expressing the hardships, the fight and the beauty which you encounter throughout your life and the pursuit of the meaning of it.
In September, MAN WITH A MISSION will physically release its new EP, XV e.p. Across the Globe. How do you feel about it? How is the feedback so far?
Jean-Ken Johnny: Very proud and I believe that reaction is great too. Thanks to everyone who checked it out.
How would you sum XV e.p. Across the Globe’s identity up in only three words?
Jean-Ken Johnny: Good stuff bro!
How did the creation process happen in the band for the four new tracks? Were there any differences or evolutions compared to the previous releases?
Jean-Ken Johnny: As it was an anniversary release, we tried to go through a different approach in the creating process which was to gather ideas by jamming and just having fun in the studio. We also decided to bring idea scratches from every member this time cause usually me and the bass player are the main writers.
The band’s sound is made of many elements, coming from Metal, Rock and a bit of Rap, which bands would you quote as your main influences? Did your influences evolve?
Jean-Ken Johnny: Mine would be Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against The Machine, Radiohead so on. Other bands I believe which are the influences for this band would be Linkin Park, Fall out Boy. Incubus, maybe MUSE.
Do you have a favorite song on XV e.p. Across the Globe? Or maybe the hardest one to create.
Jean-Ken Johnny: Vertigo was a lot of fun creating. Kind of digging back all my tastes which I have in music.
Where do you find your inspiration to create music?
Jean-Ken Johnny: It was definitely nurtured by the music going on in the 90’s I’ve listened to, and even listen to today, but also comes from the music today which I find sympathy and evolution. Also comes from a good movie, good comic or anime I dig into my everyday life.
Do you think you improved yourself as a musician/songwriter with this new record?
Jean-Ken Johnny: Hope so.
I never had the opportunity to attend a MAN WITH A MISSION show yet, how do you feel a live concert from your point of view? Do you have some pre-show or post-show routine?
Jean-Ken Johnny: I believe live music is the greatest way to feel the emotion, the passion and the ephemeral moment and beauty of what music has. Making music has its magical moments but live music amplifies that magic to something beyond. Talking about routines, not much stretch and warm up the vocal chords bla bla.
The band announced a whole tour in Europe & UK in October. How do you get prepared for this tour? How do you build the setlist?
Jean-Ken Johnny: Our bass player Kamikaze mainly fixes and comes up with the setlist, asks us if it’s ok, sometimes makes minor changes but most of the time it’s great as it is and we go for it.
What about the French Metal scene, are there any bands you know and like? It’s not the first time you will play in France, do you have some special memories of your previous live shows here?
Jean-Ken Johnny: Pleymo, I know a little bit about ten56, Landmvrks, Gojira. I have a friend who lives in France and I always enjoy visiting. France is the very first country we held our one man show outside of Japan. It’s always a pleasure.
If I ask you to create a poster with MAN WITH A MISSION as headliner and three other bands for your next release, which bands would you like to play with next time? Even unrealistic answers are accepted.
Jean-Ken Johnny: Daft Punk, Pleymo, Phoenix. Too big but the top three French artists that I admire
Last and funny question: which dish would you compare MAN WITH A MISSION’s music with?
Jean-Ken Johnny: Ra-men. It has the origin from another country but it evolved and made a new genre of its own. At the first sight you reckon it as a fast food easy to consume but once you dig it you can taste and feel the chemistry and the beautiful combination of each and every ingredient.
