Quelques questions à Michele “Mick” Guaitoli, chanteur du groupe Visions of Atlantis, après leur concert au Hellfest Open Air 2025 par Raven.

Bonjour, peux-tu me dire ton nom, car je ne sais pas trop comment le prononcer ?
Michele “Mick” Guaitoli (chant) : Bien sûr, c’est impossible à prononcer. C’est pour ça que les gens m’appellent Mick. Tout est plus simple comme ça, parce que Michele Guaitoli, c’est… c’est pour ça que j’ai un surnom. C’est pratiquement impossible. Je devrais supprimer mon nom de famille.

Bonjour Michele, et tout d’abord, merci de nous accorder un peu de ton temps ! Comment te sens-tu ?
Mick : Super heureux. En ce moment, le bonheur l’emporte sur l’envie de m’évanouir à cause de la chaleur, mais la deuxième sensation est celle de m’évanouir à cause de la guerre. Il fait super, super chaud. C’est dingue, tu sais, comme je le disais aux autres gars, chaque fois qu’on vient en France, la chaleur est incroyable, parce que le pire festival auquel on ait jamais participé était le Plane R Fest, où la chaleur était dingue et où la scène était face au soleil.
Raven : Oh mon Dieu.
Mick : C’était probablement le meilleur festival auquel nous ayons jamais participé, mais le deuxième pire en termes de température.
Raven : J’espère que le Hellfest n’est pas le pire.
Mick : Non, comme je l’ai dit, c’était probablement le meilleur, mais la température… oui, n’en parlons pas.

Première vraie question : comment décrirais-tu le groupe Visions of Atlantis sans jamais mentionner les termes “Power Metal” ou “Metal Symphonique” ?
Mick : Nous sommes un groupe sympa. Je pense que nous venons de le prouver sur scène. Quand on lit le nom de groupes comme le nôtre et qu’on connaît le style que nous jouons, on s’attend à voir un spectacle élégant et classe, avec beaucoup d’écoute et d’orchestres, tout ce genre de choses.
Raven : Peut-être pas un groupe de pirates ?
Mick : Probablement pas un groupe de pirates non plus, mais comme vous avez pu le voir pendant notre concert, les gens ont sauté, ils ont fait du pogo, des wall of death, et ils ont fait tout ce qu’on fait habituellement, comme du stage diving.
Raven : Pour être honnête, j’étais presque en train de mourir à cause du temps, et quand j’ai vu votre concert, j’ai retrouvé toute mon énergie et maintenant je suis prête.
Mick : Ça te rend vraiment très heureux, mais c’est justement ça, je pense qu’on a offert quelque chose d’inattendu, et je dois dire que c’est quelque chose qu’on essaie de combattre. À cause de nos origines, à cause de notre histoire, mais on est en train de changer. On joue du metal, pas seulement du metal symphonique. C’est un vrai concert de Metal avec tout ce qu’il faut, et les gens se sont clairement amusés, donc…
Raven : Et de ton point de vue, comment était le concert ?
Mick : Comme je l’ai déjà dit, c’est l’une des choses à faire dans sa vie, jouer au Hellfest. C’était notre première fois ici, et l’émotion était très forte. J’étais tellement excité. Tout le monde l’était, surtout Clemmi. C’est une chanteuse française qui joue dans le plus grand festival de France et probablement d’Europe, donc l’émotion était à son comble.

Tu as donc répondu à ma question suivante, car j’allais te demandais si tu étais un peu inquiet ou stressé.
Mick : Oui, exactement. Je pense que je viens d’y répondre, non ? C’est tellement difficile de décrire à quel point cela nous a touchés, comme si c’était un rêve, dans notre cœur, notre âme, c’est tout simplement magnifique.

Que signifie pour le groupe de jouer au Hellfest ?
Mick : Eh bien, jouer ici à 16 heures sur la scène principale est un énorme succès pour nous. Visions of Atlantis a une histoire mouvementée et tout le monde le sait, nous ne sommes pas le genre de groupe qui veut se cacher derrière des masques ou quoi que ce soit d’autre. Ce groupe a mis 18 ans à trouver sa stabilité. Entre 2000 et 2018, il y a eu tellement de changements dans la composition du groupe, pour employer un terme approprié, puis en 2018, nous sommes devenus une famille avec cette composition et après cela, beaucoup de choses ont changé à notre niveau, de notre côté, et il est parfois difficile de le prouver parce que les gens continuent à penser à ce qu’était le groupe avant. Et nous avons beaucoup d’obstacles que nous franchissons un par un, en sautant par-dessus les uns après les autres. Être ici est une nouvelle réussite dans la carrière de ce groupe, alors j’espère que cela aidera les gens à comprendre que nous sommes désormais un vrai groupe.

À ce propos, comment vous êtes-vous préparés pour le concert en tant que groupe ?
Mick : Pour être très honnête, ces deux ou trois dernières années, nous avons tellement joué après la COVID que nous avons retrouvé notre rythme habituel. Nous donnons entre 70 et 80 concerts par an. Nous venons de rentrer d’une tournée aux États-Unis en avril. En septembre et octobre, nous avons lancé la tournée pour notre nouvel album, Pirates II – Armada. Les chansons font tellement partie de nous que nous ne répétons pas plus ou moins que d’habitude. Ce qui est génial, c’est que nous sommes tellement impliqués que cela ne change rien au niveau de la performance. C’est au niveau émotionnel, mais cela vient naturellement. On ne pense même plus aux chansons dans notre cerveau, et c’est génial. Mais sur le plan émotionnel, ça le fait.

Le dernier album du groupe, Pirates II – Armada, est sorti il y a près d’un an. Comment a-t-il été accueilli par votre public ?
Mick : Heureusement, comme c’est toujours un saut dans l’inconnu, nous avons sauté directement dans la mer depuis la planche. Nous mettons tout notre cœur et toute notre âme dans chaque album que nous sortons. Cela représente deux à trois ans de travail, puis tout passe très vite : il y a le premier clip, puis le deuxième, puis le troisième, puis la sortie de l’album, puis la tournée commence. En quelques mois, tout est sous les yeux de tout le monde et on ne sait jamais ce qui va se passer. On ne sait jamais vraiment, c’est toujours un véritable saut dans le vide, mais nous avons fait la meilleure tournée de notre vie ici en France, notamment avec un concert solo à Paris. Nous avons attiré énormément de monde à Lyon et à Toulouse. Et le nombre de personnes venues à nos concerts a doublé par rapport à la tournée Pirates, ce qui en dit long et nous ne pouvons qu’en être heureux, je ne veux pas me vanter. Je ne fais que citer des chiffres réels.
Raven : Je vous ai vus sur scène aujourd’hui, la Mainstage était pleine malgré les 37 degrés !
Mick : Comme je l’ai dit, nous donnons le meilleur de nous-mêmes, mais ensuite, cela ne dépend plus de nous, car si les gens n’aiment pas ce que nous faisons, alors que c’est le mieux que nous pouvons offrir, cela signifie qu’ils n’aiment tout simplement pas le groupe, ce qui est normal, car ce n’est pas comme si… Je n’aime pas beaucoup de groupes et je les adore tellement… C’est de la musique, il faut juste l’accepter.

Vous avez également sorti un album live, Armada (Live Over Europe), qui contient dix-huit titres (et un discours de Clémentine) enregistrés à travers l’Europe. Comment avez-vous choisi les titres et les villes ?
Mick : Cet album n’était pas destiné à être commercialisé. Nous avons sorti gratuitement une chanson pour chaque chanson que nous avions dans les setlists de la tournée européenne de novembre à mars, si je ne me trompe pas, et le plan était de la publier sur YouTube, sur notre chaîne, gratuitement, et c’est ce que nous avons fait. Le problème, c’est qu’à chaque fois que nous publions une nouvelle vidéo, nous lisons les commentaires, et ils disaient “s’il vous plaît, sortez-le en vinyle, sortez-le en CD”. Napalm Records nous a donc dit “hé les gars, lisez les commentaires, sortons-le”. L’album est donc sorti sur Spotify et sur YouTube gratuitement en mars. Et maintenant, avec le label, nous avons décidé de le sortir physiquement en juillet. Parce que les gens l’ont demandé. Et bien sûr, on veut faire plaisir aux gens. Après tout, on fait de la musique pour le public, non ? Et si les collectionneurs le demandent, il n’y a absolument aucune raison de le retenir, mais encore une fois, comme je l’ai dit, l’album était déjà disponible gratuitement en ligne depuis mars. Les chansons ont été choisies parce qu’il s’agit de la setlist du concert.

La setlist de votre concert au Hellfest était évidemment un peu différente. Comment l’avez-vous composée ?
Mick : Je ne sais pas si vous l’avez remarqué, mais Within Temptation a choisi hier les morceaux les plus lourds de son répertoire. C’était leur setlist, et je suis sûr que Beyond the Black fait de même. Je suis sûr que compte tenu de la renommée du Hellfest, qui est un festival assez extrême depuis quelques années, tous les groupes comme le nôtre, qui sont plus mélodiques ou moins extrêmes, bien sûr, nous n’avons pas de growls, nous n’avons pas de breakdowns massifs, nous n’avons pas de guitares super lourds. En fait, nous sommes un groupe de Metal, comme je l’ai dit, mais être un groupe de Metal Symphonique signifie qu’il y a beaucoup d’orchestration. Il y a beaucoup de mélodies. Nous avons tout de même décidé de jouer les morceaux les plus lourds que nous avons, et c’est un choix que font actuellement beaucoup de groupes mélodiques. C’est donc une réponse assez simple, absolument.

Vision of Atlantis sera de nouveau en tournée avec Warkings au début de l’année prochaine pour le Pirates & Kings Tour 2026. Comment vous préparez-vous pour cette nouvelle aventure ?
Mick : Warkings n’est pas seulement un groupe du même label, mais je dois dire que ce sont aussi de très bons amis à nous. Pour vous donner un exemple, Chris et moi… Chris est le bassiste, pardon, The Viking et moi, parce qu’avec Warkings, c’est important. Donc The Viking et moi, nous nous appelons tous les jours, même si nous venons de l’enfer ou du Valhalla, et nous nous écrivons tous les jours. Il n’y a pas un seul jour où nous ne nous parlons pas. C’est encore plus vrai maintenant, avec la tournée et tout ce que nous faisons ensemble, mais nous sommes vraiment de bons amis, donc cela va un peu au-delà de deux groupes qui jouent ensemble. C’est une préparation tellement naturelle et spontanée que nous discutons davantage de l’endroit où aller dîner pendant la tournée que de tout le reste, car tout est tellement naturel et fluide.

Quels sont les prochains projets de Visions of Atlantis ? Vous avez parlé de l’album physique du concert live.
Mick : Eh bien, bien sûr, nous nous concentrons sur tous les concerts estivaux qui ont lieu actuellement et sur la tournée Pirates and Kings. Je pense qu’il serait judicieux de sortir une chanson en collaboration avec Warkings. C’est quelque chose que beaucoup de groupes font actuellement. Je pense à Dragonforce et Amaranthe. Ils ont fait une chanson avec Elyze Ryd. Je pense à Lords of Fire, la chanson entre Feuerschwanz et Lord of the Lost pour leur tournée commune. Je trouve ça amusant, tout d’abord, et la musique doit avant tout être amusante. Je pense donc que c’est quelque chose auquel nous devrions réfléchir, peut-être une collaboration, comme littéralement une chanson enregistrée ensemble. Je pense que ce serait une bonne idée. C’est donc quelque chose dont nous discuterons très bientôt, et s’ils sont partants, car ils viennent de sortir un nouvel album et nous ne voulons pas que cette chanson donne l’impression que l’album est déjà vieux si nous faisons une reprise, c’est déjà assez difficile comme ça. En même temps, nous écrivons constamment de nouvelles chansons, je pense que nous en avons déjà 12 ou 14. Mais bien sûr, il y aura une sélection, on veut toujours en avoir beaucoup plus, car nous ne sommes pas assez arrogants pour dire que tout ce que nous écrivons est une bonne chanson, mais cela doit correspondre à la durée. Ce n’est pas seulement ça, avec les musiciens, c’est difficile parce que quoi que vous fassiez, c’est un enfant que vous écrivez, et chaque enfant est beau, mais ce n’est pas la même chose pour les fans. Et les musiciens ont du mal à l’accepter parce qu’ils aimeraient que toutes les chansons qu’ils écrivent soient publiées d’une manière ou d’une autre. Nous ne sommes pas comme ça. Nous écrivons toujours plus de chansons, puis nous décidons, nous sélectionnons, nous essayons de leur donner de la valeur, sans qu’il y ait nécessairement un thème, car Pirates était un album sur la liberté. Armada était un album sur l’émancipation. Ce n’est pas comme s’il y avait une histoire qui allait du début à la fin, mais toutes les chansons de Pirates ont pour thème la liberté. Toutes les chansons d’Armada ont pour thème l’émancipation, l’émancipation personnelle, donc nous devons bien réfléchir. Ce n’est pas que toutes les chansons soient bonnes. Il faut réfléchir à celles qui correspondent à l’univers de Visions of Atlantis, mais aussi au thème de l’album, car c’est important, sinon ce n’est qu’une compilation de chansons et cela ne suffit plus.

En ce qui concerne les collaborations, avec quels groupes rêveriez-vous de jouer ? Imaginez une date pour la sortie du prochain album de Visions of Atlantis en première partie, avec trois autres groupes.
Mick : OK, je sais que c’est cliché, mais il est vrai que ces groupes sont ceux qui nous ont inspirés, donc Nightwish évidemment. Je dois dire que notre style a été inventé par Nightwish, et que nous faisons ce que nous faisons parce que Nightwish existe. Nous leur sommes donc non seulement reconnaissants, mais… Vous savez, comme Kurt Cobain avec Nirvana, il a marqué sa génération parce qu’il a inventé le grunge et que les gens s’habillaient d’une certaine manière parce que Kurt Cobain le faisait d’une certaine manière, et il y a des groupes qui créent un style, comme Metallica. Je ne peux pas dire que Metallica a inventé le Heavy Metal, mais ils avaient un style et les gens s’habillaient avec des vestes en cuir et des jeans à cause de groupes comme Saxon, à cause de groupes comme Ozzy Osbourne et Black Sabbath, à cause de groupes comme Metallica. Nous faisons ce que nous faisons parce que Nightwish existe, donc c’est plus qu’un éloge, et bien sûr Within Temptation, qui suit Nightwish. Ce sont deux branches qui ont suivi cette voie, et la troisième, je dirais pour moi-même, pas en tant que groupe, mais Avantasia. C’est mon groupe préféré de tous les temps, donc si je pouvais choisir de partir en tournée ! C’est surtout en tant que chanteur, un projet comme le leur où des dizaines de chanteurs alternent dans chaque chanson. C’est tellement inspirant et Tobias Sammet est tout simplement un génie pour moi.

Prévois-tu d’aller voir des groupes ce week-end ? Quels sont vos préférés dans la programmation ?
Mick : Je vais certainement aller voir Dream Theater. Hier, j’ai bien sûr vu Within Temptation. J’ai vu Sleep Token, j’ai vu Muse, évidemment. Le fait est que tous les groupes sont intéressants pour un musicien, car on veut voir le spectacle, on veut voir ce qui va se passer. Bien sûr, Dream Theater est le groupe de mes rêves d’enfant, je regardais leurs DVD. Metropolis Part 2 est l’un de mes albums préférés de tous les temps.
Raven : Je crois que je l’ai en CD.
Mick : Oui, moi aussi, c’est comme si tes héros étaient sur la même scène que toi, c’est… Scorpions, c’est pareil, ces groupes ont marqué l’histoire. J’ai regardé Ross the Boss. Je chante aussi dans Era, le projet français Era, je suis l’un des quatre chanteurs d’Era. Je suis en tournée avec eux.
Raven : Je n’en doute pas. J’ai le premier CD d’Era.
Mick : Le groupe a commencé à tourner en 2018. Il y a eu une tournée en février dernier. Et Eric Levy, le principal compositeur, quand il m’a appelé en Argentine, était super excité. Il a joué avec Ross the Boss au tout début. Il avait un groupe aux États-Unis où ils jouaient ensemble et Ross the Boss était le batteur d’Eric Levy. Tu sais, parfois, la musique rapproche les gens. Je l’ai découvert quand j’ai rejoint Era, je ne le savais pas avant, mais tu sais, ce sont des gens que tu admires d’une manière ou d’une autre.
Raven : C’est génial, je suis surprise !
Mick : C’était un projet fantastique qui m’a beaucoup plu. Je me sens vraiment chanceux d’en faire partie.

Dernière question, et la plus drôle : à quel plat comparerais-tu la musique de Visions of Atlantis ?
Mick : Ce serait un Wiener Schnitzel avec une sauce ragù dessus et des escargots à côté, ce qui est dégoûtant, mais c’est parce que le groupe est autrichien. Il est né en Autriche. C’est donc un Wiener Schnitzel, car c’est bien sûr le plat le plus célèbre d’Autriche, avec du ragù, car je suis italien, donc bien sûr, c’est une sauce pour pâtes, et des escargots en accompagnement, car Clémentine est française. Et c’est en accompagnement, car c’est elle le visage du groupe, donc on ne veut pas mélanger les escargots avec autre chose, ils doivent rester purs, car Clémentine est pure. Vous ne pouvez donc manger que les escargots, car c’est un mets plus raffiné, et laisser le Wiener Schnitzel au ragù, qui est dégoûtant, car ce doit être une combinaison vraiment horrible.

Eh bien, pour l’instant, je ne peux qu’être reconnaissant, vous savez, c’est vraiment l’un des meilleurs jours de ma vie. Jouer au Hellfest, c’est comme je l’ai dit, un rêve qui devient réalité, donc je ne peux qu’être reconnaissant envers vous et tous ceux qui nous ont soutenus aujourd’hui.

A few questions to Michele “Mick” Guaitoli, vocalist for the band Visions of Atlantis, after their performance at Hellfest Open Air 2025 by Raven.

Hello, can you say your name because I’m not sure how to pronounce?
Michele “Mick” Guaitoli (vocals): Absolutely, it’s impossible to pronounce. That’s why people call me Mick. So everything is easier because Michele Guaitoli it’s…  that’s why I have a surname. It’s basically impossible. I should cancel my surname. 

Hello Michele and first of all, thanks for your time! How do you feel?
Mick: Super happy. Like right now, the happiness is above the feeling of passing out because of the warmth, but the second feeling is passing out because of the war. You’re super, super hot. It’s insane, you know, like I was telling the other guys, like every time we come to France, the heat is incredible because the worst festival that we ever played was Plane R Fest, where the heat was insane and the stage was face towards the sun.
Raven: Oh my God.
Mick: Now this was probably the best festival we ever played, but the second worst in terms of temperature.
Raven: I hope the Hellfest is not the worst.
Mick: No, that was as I said the best probably ever, but temperature… yeah, let’s not talk about it.

First real question: How would you describe the band Visions of Atlantis without ever mentioning the terms “Power Metal” or “Symphonic Metal”?
Mick: We are a fun band. I think we just proved it on stage, like when you read the name of bands like us, and you know about the style that we are playing, you expect to see this elegant, classy show with a lot of listening and orchestras, all these kinds of things.
Raven: Maybe not a pirate?
Mick: Also probably not a pirate band, but then as you could see during our show, people jumped, people rode, people did circled pits,  wall of death and people like they did everything like there was stage diving.
Raven: To be honest, I was nearly dying because of the weather, and when I saw your show, I regain all of my energy and now I’m ready
Mick: That makes you really, really happy, but that’s the point, like I think we delivered something that people don’t expect, and I have to say that this is something that we are trying to fight. Because of our background, because of our history, but we are shifting. We play Metal, it’s not Symphonic Metal only. It’s a real Metal show with all the knees of a Metal show and people clearly had fun so
Raven: And from your point of view how the show was ?
Mick: As I said before, this is one of the checklists that you want to achieve in life playing Hellfest. It was our first time here, and the emotion was so high. I was so excited. Everyone was, especially Clemmi. She’s a French singer playing the biggest show in the biggest festival there is in France and probably Europe, so it was high on the emotional level.

So you answered my next question because I was asking if you are a bit apprehensive or stressed.
Mick: Yeah, exactly. I think I just answered that, right? It’s so hard to describe how this got beneath our skin, like it’s a dream, in our heart, heart and soul, it’s just beautiful.

So what does playing at Hellfest mean for the band?
Mick: Well, playing here at 4PM in the Mainstage is a huge success for us. Visions of Atlantis has a troubled history and everyone knows about it, we are not the kind of band that wants to hide behind masks or everything. This band took 18 years to find stability. Because between 2000 and 2018 there’s been so many lineup changes, to use a proper word, and then in 2018 we became a family with this lineup and after that so much changed on our level, on our side and sometimes it’s difficult to prove it because people keep on thinking of what the band was before. And we have a lot of obstacles that we are breaking one, and jumping after the other. Being here, it’s another achievement in the career of this band, so hopefully this will help to make people understand that we are a real band now.

About that, how did you prepare for the show as a band?
Mick: To be very honest, in the last 2 or 3 years, we’ve been playing so much after COVID, we got back on our standard amount of shows. We are playing 70-80 shows per year. We just came back, it was in April from a US tour. In September, October, we had the tour launch for the new record, Pirates Tour Armada. And the songs are so much inside our veins that it’s not like we rehearse more or less than usual, on this side. The great thing is that we are so into it, it’s not like it becomes more or less special on the performance level. It’s on the emotional level but it comes automatically. You don’t even think of the songs anymore in our brain, and that’s great. But emotionally-wise, it does.

The band’s latest album, Pirates II – Armada, was released almost a year ago. How was it received by your audience?
Mick: Luckily, because it’s always a jump in the dark, we jumped in the sea directly from the plank. We put heart and soul in each record that we release. It’s 2-3 years of work, and then everything passes so fast because you have the first video, then the second video, then third video, then the album release and then you start touring and. It’s a matter of months and everything is like a palm in the face of people and you never know what’s going to happen. You really never know, it’s always a true leap in the void, but we played the best tour ever here in France, especially we had a solo show in Paris. We had a huge amount of people in Lyon and in Toulouse. And the numbers of the people coming to our show was doubled compared to the Pirates tour, that is a statement and we can only be happy about it, I don’t want to brag. I’m just saying numbers that are real.
Raven: I saw you on stage today, the Mainstage was quite full despite 37 degrees!
Mick: As I said, we are giving our best then then it’s out of our control because if people don’t like what we do, if it’s the best we can give, it means that they don’t just like the band, which is fair because it’s not like… I don’t like so many bands and I love them so much… It’s music, it’s just to be accepted.

You also released a live album, Armada (Live Over Europe), which contains eighteen tracks (and a speech from Clémentine) recorded across Europe. How did you choose the tracks and cities?
Mick: This record was never meant to be released. We released for free one song for each song that we had in the set lists of the European tour from November till March if I’m right, and the plan was to drop it on YouTube, on our channel, absolutely for free, and we did. The thing is that every time we release a new video, we read the comments, and they were “please release it on vinyl, please release it on CD”. So Napalm Records was like “hey guys, read the comments, let’s release it”. So the album was out on Spotify and was out on YouTube for free in March. And now with the label, we decided to release it physically in July. Because people asked for it. And you want to please people, of course. I mean we are making music for the people, right? And if collectors are asking for it, like there is absolutely no reason why we should hold it back, but again the record was out already online for free in March, as I said. The songs were chosen because this is the setlist of the live show.

The setlist for your Hellfest show was obviously a little different. How did you put it together?
Mick: I don’t know if you noticed, but Within Temptation yesterday chose the heaviest songs that they have. And that was their setlist, I’m sure that Beyond the Black are doing the same. I’m sure that considering the fame of Hellfest, being a pretty extreme festival in the past years, all the bands like us that are more on the melodic side or less extreme, of course, we don’t have growls, we don’t have massive breakdowns, we don’t have super heavy guitars. I mean, we are a Metal band, as I said, but being a Symphonic Metal band means that there’s a lot of orchestration. There’s a lot of melodies. We still decided to play the heaviest songs that we have, and this is a choice that a lot of melodic bands are making right now. So that’s a pretty straightforward answer absolutely.

Vision of Atlantis will be touring with Warkings again early next year for the Pirates & Kings Tour 2026. How are you preparing for this new adventure?
Mick: So Warkings are not only a band of the same label, but I have to say that they are great friends of ours, just to give you an example, Chris and I… Chris is the bass player, sorry The Viking and I, because with Warkings, it’s important. So The Viking and I, we had a phone call, even if we come from hell or from Valhalla, and we write to each other every day. Like there is not a single day in which we don’t talk. Now it’s even more because of the tour and everything we’re doing together, but we are truly good friends, so this goes a bit beyond just two bands playing together. It’s a preparation that is so natural and so spontaneous, we are discussing more about where to go for dinner during the tour than everything else because everything is so natural and flowing.

What are the next projects for Visions of Atlantis? You talked about the physical album of the live show.
Mick: Well, of course the focus is on all the summer shows that are happening now and the Pirates and Kings tour. I believe that it would be smart to release a song together with Warkings. This is something that a lot of bands are doing now. I think of Dragonforce and Amaranthe. They did a song with Elyze Ryd. I think about Lords of Fire, the song between Feuerschwanz and Lord of the Lost for their tour together. I think this is fun, first of all, and music should be fun, most importantly. So I believe that this could be something that we should think about, so maybe a collaboration, like literally a song recorded together. I think this would be a smart idea. So this is something that we will discuss pretty soon, and if they are up for it, because they have a fresh record out now and we don’t want this song if we do a cover or make the album feel old already, it’s already difficult enough. And at the same time, we are constantly writing new songs, I think we already have 12 or 14 new songs. But of course there will be a selection, you always want to have a lot more because we are not that arrogant to say that everything we write is a good song, but it should fit the duration. It’s not only about that, with musicians it’s difficult because whatever you do, it’s a child that you write, and every child is beautiful, yet that’s not the same for the fans. And musicians have a hard time accepting this because you would love every song that you write to be released somehow. We are not like this. We always write more songs and we decide, we select, we try to make it valuable and not exactly like there needs to be a theme because Pirates was a record about freedom. Armada was a record about empowering itself. It’s not like there is a story that goes from the beginning to the end, but all the songs of Pirates have the theme of freedom that pops up. All the songs of Armada have the theme of empowerment, self-empowerment popping up, so we need to think it through. It’s not that all songs are good. You will need to think which one will fit the Visions of Atlantis universe and not only Visions of Atlantis universe, but also the album theme, like it’s important because otherwise it’s just a collection of songs and It’s not enough anymore.

About collaboration, which bands would you dream of playing with? Imagine a date for the release of Visions of Atlantis‘ next album as the opening act, and three other bands.
Mick: OK, I know it’s cliché, but it’s also true that these bands are the bands that inspired us, so Nightwish obviously. I have to say that our style was invented by Nightwish, and we are doing what we are doing because Nightwish exists. So we’re not only thankful towards them, but… You know, like Kurt Cobain with Nirvana he marked the generation because he invented Grunge substantially and people were dressing up in a certain way because Kurt Cobain was doing it in a certain way, and there are bands that create a style, like Metallica. I cannot say that Metallica invented Heavy Metal, but they had a style and people were dressing up with leather jackets and jeans because of bands like Saxon, because of bands like Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath, because of bands like Metallica. We do what we do because Nightwish exists, so it’s more than praise, and of course Within Temptation, are after Nightwish. They are two branches that went that way, and the third one, I will say for myself, not as a band, but Avantasia. This is my all time favorite band, so if I could choose to tour! It’s especially as a singer, a project like them where there are dozens of singers alternating in each song. This is so inspiring and Tobias Sammet is just a genius for me.

Are you planning to see any bands over the weekend? Who are your favorites on the lineup?
Mick: I for sure will watch Dream Theater. Yesterday I watched Within Temptation of course. I watched Sleep Token, I watched Muse, obviously. The thing is that basically all bands are interesting for a musician because you want to see the show, you want to see what’s going to happen. Of course Dream Theater is a childhood dream band, I was watching their DVDs. Metropolis Part 2 is one of my all-time  favorite records.
Raven: I think I have this one on CD

Mick: Yeah, me too, so it’s like your heroes being on the same stage where you played, it’s… Scorpions is the same, these bands wrote history. I watched Ross the Boss. I also sing in Era, the French project Era, I’m one of the four singers of Era. I tour with them.
Raven: I don’t doubt it. I have the first CD of Era

Mick:The band started touring in 2018. There was a tour this February. And Eric Levy, the main songwriter, when he called me into Argentina, was super excited. He played with Ross the Boss at the very beginning. He had a band in the United States where they played together and Ross the Boss was the drummer for Eric Levy. So you know sometimes music connects people. I discovered this when I joined Era, I didn’t know about it before, but you know it’s people that you admire in a way or another.
Raven: That’s so cool, I’m surprised!
Mick: That was a fantastic project that I somehow like. I feel really lucky to be part of this.

Last question and the funniest one: what dish would you compare Visions of Atlantis‘ music to?
Mick: It’s going to be a Wiener Schnitzel with ragù sauce on top and escargot on the side, which is disgusting, but it’s because the band is Austrian. It was born in Austria. Therefore, it’s a Wiener Schnitzel because of course this is the most famous dish from Austria with ragù because I’m Italian, so of course it’s pasta sauce and escargot on the side because Clémentine is French. And it’s on the side because she’s the face, so you don’t want to blend escargot with anything else, so it has to stay pure because Clémentine is pure. So you can only eat the escargot because that’s a better thing and leave the disgusting Wiener Schnitzel with ragù because this must be a really terrible combo.
