Review 3022 : Rotten Sound – Mass Extinction – English

Day 3 - 3 - Rotten Sound

No rest for Rotten Sound!

Between their intensive tours, Keijo “G” Niinimaa (vocals, Age of Woe, Morbid Evils, Goatburner, ex-Medeia) and Mika “Q” Aalto (guitar, ex-God Forsaken, ex-…and Oceans), Sami Latva (drums, Coughdust, ex-… and Oceans, ex-Deathbound) and Matti Raappana (bass, Fuck-Ushima) took the time to record their new EP, Mass Extinction.

Eight tracks, less than ten minutes long, but we’re used to that with the Finns, and we gladly let ourselves be carried away by their abrasive HM-2-fueled sound, which is either projected at full speed or more slowly, veering almost towards sludge at times. In any case, blast beats and aggressive riffs are as effective as ever under Keijo‘s screams, and the band wastes no time on fancy introductions or other airy passages; everything is focused on violence. There are still a few moments of respite, such as on Polarized, which offers a slightly calmer break before giving way to violence once again, always drawing on the most virulent old-school sounds that hit us constantly. Honorable mention goes to the dissonant harmonics of Empty Shells, which add a disturbing touch to the aggression, as well as the eponymous track Mass Extinction, which closes the EP and offers a suffocating sound in every respect to welcome the vocal sample.

Every Rotten Sound release is forged in the purest and most unbridled violence, and you may suffer if you are not warned. The band will soon be back on the road to promote Mass Extinction, and the dates are already shaping up to be a real bloodbath!
