Review 471 : Buried – Oculus Rot – English

Pyaemia is dead, but Buried is ready to pick up the burden.

Founded in the Netherlands on Pyaemia’s ashes by Robbert Vrijenhoek (drums, ex-Disavowed), Joel Sta (vocals, Arsebreed, ex-Disavowed) and Mark Wormmeester (bass, ex-Arsebreed), the band recruits Steve (guitar) for Oculus Rot, their first album.

With this album, the band offers us nine songs of a pure Death Metal. Half an hour of modern sound with Old School influences that alternates between violence, fastness and auditive grease. Members are far from beginners, and it can be felt into their hooking riffs. Since Retribution, the first song, Groove invites itself to this merciless Death Metal that relentlessly crushes us. We notice some more technical parts, like on the heavy Anti-Body, while Tornado of Blood’s raging sound will motivate even the most reluctant crowds. Buried makes us wait a moment with a worrying sampel before attacking again, then Oculus Rot, the eponymous song, takes the lead to assault us with a dissonant rhythmic after a sonar. Once again, dissonant sonorities are melted to technical and heavy riffs for Leech, accompanied by some breaks, then Splintered locks us into a tornado of pure violence. It’s in this particular song that we can integrate the best those Old School influences, while Paradise crushes us with continuous heavy parts. Tenebrous Worm, the last song, wears darker and more worrying sonorities to close this album with violence.

The coming of Buried into the Death Metal scene is an excellent thing. Without reinventing the style, Oculus Rot is a perfect transition between Old School Death Metal, Brutal Death and modern sonorities, that may introduce the most reluctant ones.
