Review 480 : Salò – Sortez Vos Morts – English

Salò comes to spit its anger right to our face.

HCT (bass/vocals), AVS (guitar), NGH (drums) and DLE (keyboards/samples) are determined and Sortez Vos Morts, their first EP, is a proof.

Helped by labels Cold Dark Matter Records, Coups de couteau and Duality records for physical versions, the four frenchs are ready to fight as well as to let their rage speak. After the introductive sample named La morale c’est ça, from the french movie Seul contre tous, the band goes to a dirty Blackened Crust Punk with ice-cold Industrial accents. Fury is the guiding principles of Sans Cri Ni haine, an as catchy as disturbing and violent song. Keyboards slip into those effective riffs, as if they wanted to strengthen those meaningful lyrics, like on Sans Toit Ni Loi. Whether sometimes vocals give way to defeatist sampled words or effects, we feel that the band’s motivation is the same. Tant d’Interdits is next, and it is once again full of samples, that soften the rhythmic between two spurts of furor. The sound is catchy, but we still feel queasy, like on Sonnez la Curée. Energetic but dark, the composition offers an interesting dissonance that picks into Black Metal while staying in those Crust Punk sonorities. After a slow outro, Contagion comes to wreak havoc. Very aggressive, the composition will easily motivate the crows during the band’s shows, but the rhythmic briefly calms down before coming back to wrenching riffs.

Salò’s first EP sets the pace. Violent, disturbing and critical, Sortez Vos Morts belongs to the top of the french scene when we talk about Grind/Crust, whether it is into this so dirty sound or this pure energy.
