Review 526 : Turris Eburnea – Turris Eburnea – English

The tornado Turris Eburnea begins.

Created in 2020 by Gabriele Gramaglia (vocals/guitar/other instruments, Cosmic Putrefaction, The Clearing Path, Summit) and Nicholas McMaster (bass, Krallice, Gath Smane, Geryon, Edenic Past, ex-Castevet), the band offers us Turris Eburnea, its first EP.

With this four-song EP, the band sets the basis of a dissonant, complex and dark Death Metal created during the pandemic by the duo, and illustrated by Babar Moghal (Ars Magna Umbrae). Without warning, Unified Fields strikes and unveils haunting melodies, that will be joined by a mad fury, chaining convoluted riffs on harrowing ambiences. This multiplication of harmonics is quite fascinating, and it will be the same for the crushing Cotard Delusion, a suffocating song that offers some soft sonorities, creating an incredible contrast with the ryhtmic’s violence. The extreme saturation of the riffs catches us in this infernal whirlwind, while piercing leads on Syncretism Incarnate create a dimension in which the soft instrumental fury can express itself on a very technical basis. Heaviness is joined by softer and more soaring sonorities, then Malachite Mountains is next. Cavernous howlings are back on an as impressive rhythmic about technicality, but also on an oppressive and catchy feeling, creating cosmic impressive sonorities to close the exhibition.

Turris Eburnea pushes back the limits of fury and dissonance. This first EP allow them to affirm their style with multiple influences, but also to prove that the duo perfectly masters those mystical and very complex sonorities.
