Review 585 : Abjection – Malignant Deviation – English

Be ready for Abjection’s assault.

Recently created between several countries, Cole Benoit (vocals, Phemüt, ex-Dead Again), Sergey Jmourovski (guitar/bass, The Weir, ex-Wake), Troy Horton (guitar, ex-Wiser Fool) and Josh Bueckert (drums, Wake) offer us Malignant Deviation, their first EP.

Quite short, the EP tends to some greasy and suffocating Old School Death Metal that begins with Of Consuming Decay, a worrying introduction. We feel some blackness that leaks out of leads, then Illusion of Sleep strikes with a crushing rhythmic. The sound is thick and oppressive, letting cavernous howlings and leads strike them turn to turn, then the haunting The Black Stag shrouds us into its foggy universe. The rhythmic becomes faster and more solid, offering something to nod on, then the rageous and energetic Nightmares Awoken comes next, making bloody harmonics and a fast rhythmic with violent influences live together. The Madness Within comes back to unhealthy tones with Black Metal influences, then the EP ends with Darkness Unatterable, the longest song. The composition is both dissonant and raw, picking as much into a dirty Death Metal as into an unhealthy Black Metal.

Abjection’s first EP will be loved by Old School sounds fans. Malignant Deviation reminds us the american scene from the nineties, and makes us regret the lack of live shows to frantically nod.
