Review 2315 : Inherits the Void – Scars of Yesteryears – English

Inherits the Void continues on its course.

Created in 2020 with a first EP, Antoine Scholtès‘ project (all instruments/vocals) now offers us Scars of Yesteryears, its third album, accompanied by Avantgarde Music.

Drums were recorded by Nico “Ranko” Muller (Artefact, eOn, ex-Otargos, ex-Svart Crown…).

Dissonance and aggression are summoned from the very first moments of Celestial Antler, a relatively ethereal first composition featuring Antoine‘s intense vociferations over his icy rhythmics. Keyboards and harmonics add a heady touch, before the sound becomes heavier, leading to the trenchant The Orchard Of Grief and its martial approach, which contrasts with the more ethereal elements and furious vocal parts, but also with the touches of complexity that the musicians exploit from time to time. Ashes Of Grievance reveals a much more melancholic sound, and although screams act as small eruptions of violence, the track remains very haunting, almost soothing, and this mood will continue on The Meander’s Gate, where the musician shows us a slightly darker side before setting off again on a mad dash between blast and jerky leads. Epic sonorities return with L’Effigie Du Déclin, where we feel the impressive stance with Old School roots involved in the deflagrations, but the band once again abandons itself to reverie and nostalgia with Scars Of Yesteryears, the eponymous track, where guitars develop a murky atmosphere before letting waves of power ignite to testify to the track’s viscerality. L’Eternelle Course Des Astres takes on a lighter and more soaring tone, but also leaves room for more virulent outbursts from time to time, as on the final, which gives way to The Endless Glow Of Twilight and its fascinating notes that fly around us as the rhythm rages on, welcoming a few ghostly choirs in the softer passages.

I was lucky enough to discover Inherits the Void in its early days, and can testify to the project’s growing maturity. Scars of Yesteryears perfectly assumes its identity and influences, blending them to develop its own weapons that will break down all our mental defenses and bewitch us.
