Review 2357 : thrown – EXCESSIVE GUILT – English

Here comes thrown‘s violent debut album.

After an EP that marked the scene with thousands, then eventually millions of listens, Marcus Lundqvist (vocals), Johan Liljeblad (guitar), Andreas Malm (guitar) and Buster Odeholm (drums, Humanity’s Last Breath, Vildhjarta) unveil their debut album, EXCESSIVE GUILT, on Arising Empire.

thrown‘s recipe can be summed up in a few words: dissonance, aggression and heaviness. The tracks are relatively short (only guilt, the album’s opening track, exceeds two-and-a-half minutes), and feature groovy but devastating moshparts made for live performance. The vocal parts provide a permanent vindictiveness between two eruptions of screaming leads or modern effects, Trap influences and other disturbing or catchy noisy elements, but the balance is respected overall, and the violence always takes over in the end, making us want to punch anything that comes within fist’s reach.

The album is relatively short – the eleven tracks are finished in just over twenty minutes – but the flow remains fluid, allowing us to navigate between familiar singles such as on the verge, nights or look at me and new compositions, such as ignored and its regular explosions, or the oppressive bloodsucker, which relies on an apocalyptic but modern ambience. Special mention must also goes to the final duo, vent and so done, which give us two more reasons to break our necks.

Knowing who’s at the helm of thrown, there was no room for doubt, and I can confirm that EXCESSIVE GUILT will be stirring up the pits! Get your best sound system ready, and start warming up.
