Review 2511 : Detest – A World Drowning In Detest – English

Detest is stronger than ever.

After a brief existence in the ’90s, the Danish band is gradually coming back to life, and starting to create again. In 2024, John Petersen (guitar), Simon Springborg (bass/vocals), Jesper Mathiesen (drums) and Anders L. Nissen (guitar) unveil A World Drowning In Detest, their third album, in collaboration with Emanzipation Productions.

The album kicks off with It’s Over, a melodic yet disquieting introduction in which the instruments gradually build up to blast and chaotic leads before Drowning In Detest lets the furious vocal parts appear. The band’s Old School touch gives it a massive, aggressive sound, but it also becomes heavier to punctuate the waves of violence before moving on to Bullet Rain, which takes a similar approach. There are touches of Brutal Death in this devastating composition, but also energetic moments before dipping into Death/Doom for Misery Stand In Line and its very slow introduction. The track adopts a number of different rhythms, creating an appreciable jerky effect that makes it catchy and allows us to play with length, before returning to the breathless tone of F.Y.M.M.F. and its screaming melodies, making the atmosphere rather heavy. Dissonant leads fuel the ambient chaos, within which the cavernous growl appears from time to time, but Never Can Be Banished returns to energetic patterns and the track conscientiously rolls over us, allowing us a few passages where the drums are slightly less present. The sound darkens with As I Expected, but the track also expresses itself with fast, stirring riffs that hit us regularly before giving way to Supposed To Suffer, the final track where the irregular rhythm makes its effect and easily captures our attention for a final fix of violence.

Detest confirms its comeback with powerful riffs and a mastery of violence. If you like Old School Death Metal, A World Drowning In Detest is a must-have!
