Quelques questions à Faber Horbach et Micky Huijsmans, respectivement cerveau/multi-instrumentiste et chanteuse du groupe de musique folk Sowulo au Hellfest 2025 par Raven.
Bonjour et merci de nous accorder un peu de votre temps. Tout d’abord, comment vous sentez-vous ?
Faber Horbach : Merci beaucoup de nous recevoir. Nous nous sentons très bien, car le Hellfest est incroyable. On se sent comme une véritable rock star ici, dans les coulisses, donc tout va bien.
Et toi, comment vas-tu ?
Micky Huijsmans : Je vais très bien. Il fait super chaud, mais à part ça, c’est génial d’être ici, et c’est en fait ma première fois ici. Je n’ai jamais été ici en tant qu’invité non plus. J’ai toujours voulu venir, donc c’est génial que ma première fois ici soit pour jouer.
Raven : Et nous allons tous brûler en enfer. C’est déjà le cas, je brûle déjà.
Sowulo va jouer dans quelques heures sur la Temple. Êtes-vous prêts pour le concert ?
Faber : Oui, nous sommes tout à fait prêts, car nous avons donné des concerts fantastiques l’année dernière, et quelque chose d’excitant va se produire, car nous allons jouer une nouvelle chanson ce soir. Elle sortira dans quelques jours, mardi, mais nous ne l’avons encore jamais jouée sur scène, donc le Hellfest aura la primeur.
Raven : Merci à tous ceux qui sont ici.
Comment vous êtes-vous préparés pour le concert en tant que groupe, et comment avez-vous établi la setlist que vous allez jouer ?
Micky : Nous nous sommes préparés en donnant beaucoup de concerts à l’avance. De plus, nous ne sommes pas un groupe qui répète beaucoup, donc nous avons juste fait une répétition pour bien maîtriser la nouvelle chanson.
Faber : Oui, comme l’a dit Micky, nous ne répétons pas comme un groupe normal, mais nous le faisons tous séparément chez nous. Nous nous préparons très bien, puis je loue un grand studio et nous y faisons essentiellement une session studio, donc c’est toujours très amusant de faire une répétition ou de préparer un concert et la setlist. Nous avons décidé de mettre beaucoup d’énergie dans les chansons, car nous ne pouvons pas jouer très longtemps, afin de pouvoir inclure toutes les chansons parfaites pour un festival de Metal.
Que signifie pour vous et pour le groupe le fait de jouer au Hellfest ?
Faber : Depuis mon adolescence, j’adore le Metal, mais surtout le Metal plus technique et artistique. Donc, être ici, parmi des artistes que j’admire vraiment, c’est super, super cool. En gros, ma musique ressemble au Metal de l’époque viking. Je me sens donc vraiment bienvenu ici. Je pense que ça colle vraiment bien.
Micky : Oui, c’est un peu surréaliste en fait, parce que la programmation d’aujourd’hui comprend beaucoup de groupes que j’écoutais quand j’étais très jeune. Je viens de voir Sharon de Within Temptation là-bas, et c’est en grande partie grâce à elle que j’ai voulu devenir chanteur, sans oublier Muse et Epica, bien sûr. C’est donc très cool d’être ici parmi d’autres groupes et artistes qui m’ont donné envie de devenir musicien et… oui, de faire du métal. Même ma formation musicale s’est faite à la Metal Factory, qui est, je pense, la seule école de musique Metal au monde, située à Eindhoven, où enseignent également certains membres de Within Temptation et d’Epica. Donc oui, c’est un peu comme si la boucle était bouclée pour moi.
Cela fait déjà un an que votre dernier album, Wurdiz, est sorti. Est-ce que j’ai bien prononcé le titre ? Bon, que penses-tu de cet album aujourd’hui ?
Faber : L’album Wurdiz reste mon préféré parce que… Chaque album est un album conceptuel et raconte essentiellement une histoire ou un chapitre de ma vie, mais Wurdiz traitait vraiment de la foi ou du destin. J’ai donc donné forme à mon propre destin, j’ai eu ces conversations avec le destin et je les ai intégrées dans le concept de l’album. Il m’est très cher et je pense aussi que sur le plan musical, je me suis vraiment surpassé avec beaucoup de travail orchestral. Le processus d’enregistrement a également été une grande production, car il y a plusieurs parties de violon, deux parties de violoncelle, deux parties de percussion, une harpe celtique… C’est donc une production audio massive et cela a donné un album magnifique pour moi.
Raven : C’était un chef-d’œuvre pour toi.
Faber : Oui, et en ce moment, nous sommes occupés avec le nouvel album, qui sera également incroyable.
Vous faites beaucoup de tournées en France, le public français est-il plus réceptif que dans d’autres pays ?
Faber : Oui, je pense, surtout pour Sowulo, nous avons beaucoup de succès en France, c’est aussi pour cela que nous venons si souvent en France. Nous adorons cet endroit et les gens aiment notre musique, c’est comme si nous avions un lien particulier avec le public ici, ce qui rend les choses très spéciales. C’est pourquoi nous aimons revenir encore et encore en France.
Chaque chanson que vous composez est comme une tempête d’influences diverses. Pouvez-vous nous expliquer comment vous créez votre musique ? Y a-t-il des influences majeures ou une direction dominante, comme tu parlais d’un album conceptuel ?
Faber : Chaque fois que je compose un album, je ne réfléchis pas trop, je me contente de réfléchir au chapitre de ma vie dans lequel je me trouve et à celui qui joue un rôle important au moment où j’écris l’album. Et puis, chaque fois que je fais un album, c’est-à-dire tous les trois ans, il se passe quelque chose de spécial à ce moment-là. Cela me pousse à créer un certain concept, à partir duquel la musique se crée presque toute seule. Je suis juste là, je ne suis qu’un réceptacle, mais la musique est déjà quelque part dans le cosmos et je ne fais que la créer. Tu veux dire quelque chose ?
Micky : C’est aussi souvent un peu comme une prophétie. Tu as déjà le concept en tête, juste après ou pendant le processus d’écriture de l’album précédent, et puis, quand tu le réalises, c’est comme une prophétie, les choses se réalisent ou se déroulent vraiment dans ce thème, donc je pense que c’est très spécial à voir.
Je pense que cela pourrait intéresser notre public si vous pouviez approfondir la symbolique que vous utilisez dans votre album et qui vous influence.
Faber : Alors cette interview va durer de nombreuses heures, je pense *rires*, mais je peux vous dire que Sowulo est l’une des runes et que chaque rune a une signification symbolique. Sowulo est la rune du soleil. Il y a beaucoup de soleil ici en ce moment, mais tout comme le soleil nous donne le jour et la nuit et nous offre les quatre saisons, il nous donne également cette signification cyclique dans la vie. Tous les concepts et toute la musique que j’écris sont essentiellement une ode au soleil et à la nature cyclique de notre existence ici. Et chaque album conceptuel a également ses propres cycles, du début à la fin, ce que l’on peut entendre dans les compositions musicales, par exemple dans une intro, puis un morceau très fort, suivi de morceaux plus calmes, puis d’un outro, ce qui correspond vraiment à la conception, la naissance, la croissance, puis la mort et la décomposition.
Tu as parlé de nouveaux morceaux et vous avez récemment annoncé avoir signé avec Season of Mist. Que peux-tu nous dire à ce sujet ?
Faber : En écrivant cet album sur lequel je travaille actuellement, j’ai vraiment senti que j’avais quelque chose de spécial entre les mains. Je créais quelque chose d’exceptionnel et je voulais vraiment toucher un public plus large. Au cours des 12 dernières années, j’ai tout fait moi-même, y compris la promotion, donc je n’ai pas fait beaucoup de promotion. Je cherchais donc vraiment un label qui pourrait m’aider à toucher un public plus large, à la hauteur de ma musique. Je pense que nous pouvons vraiment toucher plus de gens avec notre musique, mais aussi avec des produits dérivés et autres, car l’industrie musicale est en quelque sorte une compétition et nous avons besoin de partenaires pour nous démarquer et toucher plus de gens. Et Season of Mist est le choix idéal, je pense. J’étais souvent en tournée avec Heilung avant la pandémie, donc je connaissais déjà les gens de Season of Mist et j’avais pu voir comment ils travaillaient. Ils avaient une très bonne énergie et font un travail formidable. De plus, leurs artistes metal sont vraiment créatifs. Ce n’est pas du Metal classique, mais quelque chose de plus artistique, donc j’ai vraiment senti que Season of Mist était le meilleur choix pour moi pour collaborer sur ce nouvel album.
Je vais donc rebondir sur ta réponse concernant le nouvel album. J’ai entendu parler de la lune. Y a-t-il une influence ou un concept lié à cela dans le nouvel album ?
Faber : Je vais garder cela secret jusqu’à la sortie le 29 août, mais en effet, cela va parler de la nature cyclique de la lune en particulier, mais il y a plus que cela, mais cela viendra plus tard. Cet album sera plus sombre, peut-être même dans l’obscurité ou dans la nuit, car c’est là que la lune se lève. Quelque chose dans ce sens, le concept sera abordé en profondeur.
Raven : Très intéressant, et tu sais, l’obscurité a besoin d’une lumière pour être vue, donc je suis plutôt content. Je vais l’écouter.
Si vous deviez choisir un musicien invité pour votre prochain album, qui choisiriez-vous et pourquoi ?
Faber : Je dirais Corey Taylor de Slipknot. Tout simplement parce qu’il m’a beaucoup influencé, c’est une sorte d’idole d’adolescent pour moi. Ce serait génial de faire quelque chose qui sorte de l’ordinaire. Ce serait sympa d’avoir la belle voix de Corey Taylor, pas les cris et les grognements, mais sa voix est tout simplement incroyable. Il m’a vraiment inspiré à chanter avec beaucoup de techniques de distorsion. Je trouve sa voix tout simplement géniale.
Raven : Je suis surprise.
Faber : Désolé, je suis curieux. Qui choisirais-tu ?
Micky : Dans le même registre, je pense que Jonathan Davis serait génial, car il m’a aussi beaucoup influencé, mais le voir faire *grognements étranges de Freak on a Leash* comme ça sur un titre, je pense que ce serait génial.
Raven : D’accord, au moins je suis déjà assis par terre *rires*.
Vous prévoyez d’aller voir des groupes aujourd’hui ?
Faber : Je ne sais pas trop. J’espère revoir mes collègues et ma famille de Heilung, parce que, comme je te l’ai dit, j’ai joué avec eux pendant de nombreuses années jusqu’à la pandémie, donc c’est toujours un plaisir de les revoir et de les retrouver en coulisses, mais aussi de voir le spectacle évoluer et maintenant, ils jouent sur la scène principale. C’est fou, non ?
Micky : La question est toujours de savoir ce que l’on peut voir quand on doit aussi travailler. C’est le seul inconvénient, je suppose, de devoir travailler pendant un festival *rires*. Mais j’ai vraiment envie de revoir Muse. Je les ai vus il y a des années et leur spectacle est tout simplement incroyable, je suis très impatient. Je pense que je vais pouvoir les revoir, ainsi que Within Temptation et Epica, et j’espère aussi un peu Heilung. Voilà mon choix.
Raven : Ce sont des souvenirs d’adolescence.
Une dernière question : à quel plat compareriez-vous la musique de Sowulo ?
(Micky rit, Faber fixe le vide, ndlr)
Raven : Je t’ai eu !
Faber : La seule réponse raisonnable à cette question serait… nous avons mangé une pizza il y a environ un mois à Copenhague, dans un endroit super bizarre, tu pourras peut-être le décrire après ma réponse, mais nous pensions juste manger un morceau, un dîner rapide. Nous avons commandé des pizzas, mais nous avons eu droit à de véritables chefs-d’œuvre. C’était de l’art. C’était de l’art à proprement parler, car ce n’étaient pas des pizzas normales. Ils faisaient eux-mêmes la pâte. Tout était bio, biologique. Mais la garniture était tellement bizarre, quelque chose à laquelle on ne s’attendait pas, comme des pommes de terre violettes râpées et des fleurs dessus, mais aussi des ingrédients épicés, donc les ingrédients les plus bizarres, mais ça avait l’air incroyable. Et puis quand on a commencé à manger, chaque bouchée avait un goût complètement différent et c’était juste incroyable et on ne pouvait pas s’arrêter de partager la nourriture et on ne pouvait pas s’arrêter de parler du goût de la nourriture, donc quelque chose comme ça ! C’était au Danemark, à Copenhague.
Micky : Je crois que parler de nourriture quand on mange n’est pas une habitude néerlandaise. Je ne le fais jamais, mais en effet, pendant tout le temps que nous avons passé là-bas, nous n’avons pas arrêté de parler de la nourriture et de la façon dont chaque bouchée était différente. De plus, l’intérieur de cet endroit ressemblait au style du Grand Budapest Hotel.
C’était ma dernière question. Avez-vous un dernier mot pour le public français ?
Faber : Merci beaucoup pour votre soutien ici en France, car vous êtes tout simplement le public le plus incroyable pour Sowulo en ce moment. Continuez comme ça, et ce serait génial de vous retrouver mardi prochain pour la sortie de notre nouveau single, A?steorfan. A few questions to Faber Horbach and Micky Huijsmans, respectively mastermind/multi-instrumentist and singer for the Folk music band Sowulo at Hellfest 2025 by Raven.
Hello and thank you for your time. First of all, how do you feel?
Faber Horbach: Thank you so much for having us. We feel terrific because Hellfest is amazing. You feel like a proper rock star here in the backstage, so we’re fine.
How are you?
Micky Huijsmans: Yeah, I’m great. It’s fucking hot, but besides that, it’s amazing to be here and it’s my first time here actually. I’ve also never been here as a guest. I always wanted to come, so it’s amazing that my first time here is when I get to play.
Raven: And all of us will burn in hell. It’s already, I’m already burning.
Sowulo will play in a few hours on the Temple stage. Do you feel ready for the show?
Faber: Yeah, we’re absolutely ready because uh we did some fantastic shows last year, and something exciting is going to happen because we’re going to play a new song tonight. It will be released in just a few days on Tuesday, um, but we haven’t played it before on stage so Hellfest has a premiere.
Raven: Thank you for all the people here.
How did you get prepared for the concert as a band, and how did you build the setlist you will play?
Micky: We got prepared by doing a lot of shows in advance. Also, we’re not a band that does a lot of rehearsals, so we just did one rehearsal to get the new track down really well.
Faber: Yeah, so like Micky told you, we don’t rehearse as a normal band, but we all do it separately at home. We prepare very well, and then I rent a big studio and we basically do a studio session there, so it’s always so much fun to do a rehearsal or preparation for a show and for the setlist. We decided to just push in a lot of energy song wise because we don’t get to play that long so we could squeeze in all the perfect songs for a Metal festival.
What does playing Hellfest mean for you and for the band?
Faber: From teenager until now I really love metal, but mostly like more technical and artistic Metal, so being here, in between artists that I really admire is super, super cool and basically my music feels like Metal music from the Viking age. So I feel really welcome here. I think it fits really, really well.
Micky: Uh yeah, it’s a bit surreal actually, because the lineup of today is a lot of the bands that I listened to when I was very young. I saw Sharon over there from Within Temptation just now, and she is like a big part of why I even wanted to become a singer in the first place and then also Muse and Epica, of course. So it’s very cool to be here among other bands and artists that made me want to become a musician in the first place and… yeah, doing Metal, even the music education that I did was uh the Metal factory and I think the only Metal music education in the whole world, is in Eindhoven and also some people from Within Temptation and Epica teach there. So yeah, it’s a bit of a full circle moment for me.
It’s been quite a year since your latest album Wurdiz is out. Did I pronounced correctly? Well, what do you think about this album right now ?
Faber: Still, the Wurdiz album is my personal favorite because… Every album is a concept album and basically tells a story or a chapter from my life, but Wurdiz was really about faith or destiny. So giving shape to my own destiny and having these conversations with destiny and putting it into this concept for the album. It’s really dear to me and I also think that music wise I really pushed myself with a lot of orchestral work and also the recording process was like a big production because there are several viola parts, violin, 2 cello parts, 2 percussion parts, Celtic harp, so like it’s a massive production audio wise and it became such a beautiful album for me.
Raven: It was a masterpiece for you.
Faber: Yeah and at the moment I’m, we’re busy with the new album and uh that’s gonna be amazing as well.
You are touring a lot in France, is the audience in France more receptive than in other countries ?
Faber: Yeah, I think so, especially for Sowulo, we’re doing very well in France, so that is also why we’re coming to France so much. We love it here and the people love our music, so it’s like a connection that we have with the crowd here that makes it very special. So we like to come back again and again to France.
Every song you make is like a storm of many influences, so can you tell us how you create your music? Are there some major influences, or dominant direction, like you are talking about a concept album?
Faber: Each time that I make an album, I just don’t think too much, but I just reflect on what kind of chapter I am and uh what chapter is playing a big part in my life at the moment of writing the album. And then each time that I make an album and that is every 3 years, something special is happening at the moment. And that makes me create a certain concept and from that the music is created almost by itself. I’m just there, I’m just a vessel, but the music is already somewhere there in the cosmos and I just created. You want to say something?
Micky: It’s also a lot of times like a bit of a prophecy. You already have the concept in mind, like right after or right in the middle of the writing process of the previous album, and then, when you make it, it’s like a prophecy, things come true about it or things unfold like really in that theme, so I think that’s very special to witness.
I think it can be interesting for our audience if you can go deeper about the symbolism you’re using in your album in your influence.
Faber: Then this interview will take many, many hours, I think *laughs*, but I can tell you that Sowulo is one of the runes and every rune has a symbolic meaning, and Sowulo is the rune of the sun. There’s plenty enough sun here at the moment, but like the sun gives us our day and night and also gives us these four seasons, so it gives us this cyclical meaning in life. All the concepts and all the music that I write is basically an ode to the sun and the cyclical nature of our existence here. And every concept album also has its own circles from beginning until death, so you can hear that in the music compositions, so maybe from an intro to a really loud piece and maybe some quiet stuff and then more outro stuff, so really conception, birth, growth, and then the dying part and decay.
You talked about some new material, and you recently announced signing with Season of Mist, what can you tell us about it?
Faber: Writing this album that I’m working on now, I really felt that I had something special in hand. I was creating something special and I really wanted to reach out to a bigger crowd. And in the last 12 years I did everything myself, also promotion and stuff, so not a lot of promotion. So I was really searching for a record label that could help me to reach out to a bigger crowd that my music deserves, so I think we can really reach out to more people with our music, but also merchandise and stuff because the music industry is kind of a competition and we need some partners to get above the noise and to reach out to more people. And Season of Mist is the perfect choice, I think. I was touring with Heilung a lot before the pandemic, so I already knew people from Season of Mist and I just saw how they were. They had such good energy and they are doing a terrific job. And also their Metal artists that they have are really creative. It’s not just normal Metal but more artistic, so I really felt that Season of Mist was the best choice for me to collaborate with for this new album.
And so I will be bouncing on your answer about the new album, I’ve heard something about the moon. So is there any influence about it or any concept about it in the new album?
Faber: I’m gonna keep it a little bit of a secret until the release on the 29th of August, but indeed like it’s gonna tell the cyclical nature of the moon especially, but there’s more to it, but that will follow. This album will be more dark, so maybe even in darkness or in the night because then the moon is up. So something in that direction, the concept will be talking about in depth.
Raven: Very interesting and you know the darkness needs a light to be seen, so I’m quite happy. I will listen to it.
If you had to pick one guest musician for your next work, who would you choose and why?
Faber: I would say Corey Taylor from Slipknot. Just because he’s a big influence, like a teenage idol for me. Just to do something out of the order that would be amazing. Just to have some beautiful singing vocals by Corey Taylor would be nice, not the screaming and the grinding part, but his voice is just amazing. He really inspired me to sing with a lot of distortion techniques. I think his voice is just fucking awesome.
Raven: I am surprised.
Faber: Sorry, I’m curious. Who would you pick?
Micky: In the same realm, I think Jonathan Davis would be amazing because also a big influence, but him doing *doing the strange Freak on a Leash part* like that at the solo track, I think that would be gold.
Raven: Okay, at least I’m already sitting on the ground *laughs*.
Do you plan to see some bands today?
Faber: I’m not sure. I hope to see my colleagues and family from Heilung because like I told you like I played with them for many years until the pandemic, so it’s always a pleasure to see them again and to meet them again in the backstage, but also see the show develop and now they are playing main stage. How crazy is that?
Micky: It’s always a question of what you get to see when you also have to work. That’s the only downside I guess of having to work at a festival *laughs*. But I really want to see Muse again. I saw them years ago and their show is just amazing and I’m very excited. I think I get to see them again, also Within Temptation and Epica and hopefully a little bit of Heilung. That’s my pick.
Raven: That’s teenage memories.
One last question: to which dish would you compare Sowulo’s music?
(Micky laughs, Faber stares into the void, ed.)
Raven: I got you!
Faber: The only reasonable answer to that would be… we ate a pizza just like a month ago in Copenhagen in this super weird place, maybe you can describe it after my answer, but we just thought we’re gonna have a quick bite, a quick dinner. And we ordered pizza, but we got like masterpieces. It was art. It was proper art because it was not just normal pizza. They made the dough completely themselves. It was all organic, biological. But the topping was so weird, something that you would not expect, like shaved purple potato and flowers on top, but also spicy stuff, so the most weird ingredients, but it looked amazing. And then when we started eating it, every single piece that we ate tasted completely different and it was just amazing and basically we couldn’t stop sharing food and we couldn’t stop talking about the taste of the food, so something like that! It was in Denmark. It was in Copenhagen.
Micky: Talking about food when you’re eating is not a Dutch thing, I believe. I never do that, but indeed like the whole the whole time we were there, we couldn’t stop talking about the food and how different every bite was. Also the inside of that place was like Grand Budapest hotel style.
That was the last question for me, do you have any last words for the French audience?
Faber: Thank you so much for your support here in France because you’re just the most amazing crowd for Sowulo at the moment, so keep on doing that and it would be amazing to check in upcoming Tuesday our new single will be out then, A?steorfan. 29th of August, our new album will come out and um I hope everybody will enjoy it very much.
