Bonjour et tout d’abord, merci de m’accorder de votre temps ! Sans jamais utiliser le terme “Black Metal”, comment pourriez-vous décrire le groupe Öld Black ?
Old : Salut amigos ! Ahaha, elle est propre cette question, je vais t’y répondre en un seul groupement de mot : ROCK’N’ROLL !!!!
D’où vient le nom Öld Black et comment le relies-tu personnellement à la musique du groupe ? Pourquoi l’avoir orthographié avec l’ümlaut sur le Ö ?
Old : Alors c’est super simple, Öld parce que Öld Black est un groupe qui est et restera old-school, ancré dans les temps ancien d’un Black Metal (j’ai le droit d’utiliser le mot maintenant) crasseu, underground, malfamé, d’où le « black ». Le ümlaut viens bien évidement de Motörhead, car je suis ultra fanatique de ce gang, et aussi parce qu’on trouve que ça fait mega rock’n’roll ce fameu « ö ». A l’époque le ümlaut n’était pas là, on à changé de logo il y a peu on l’a intégré.
Votre nouvel EP, D.T.R. – R.T.D., sort dans quelques semaines, comment vous sentez-vous au sein du groupe ? Est-ce que tu as déjà eu des retours à son sujet ?
Old : Petite correction, il s’agit d’un album, 7 titres, 40 minutes de Black’n’Roll mais vraiment très n’roll, pas ce n’roll parce que tu entends 2 riffs groove dans l’album. Pour le moment, seul certain media ont eu accès à l’album complet, le reste de la plèbe n’en a eu qu’une bride, un titre, et donc pour le moment il n’y a eu que très peu de retour, mais la plupart sont positifs.
Comment résumerais-tu D.T.R. – R.T.D. en trois mots ? Que signifie d’ailleurs “D.T.R. – R.T.D.” ?
Old : Alors en 3 mots… Débauche, blasphème, rock’n’roll ! Ça fait beaucoup de rock’n’roll je conçois, mais Öld Black est vraiment dans cette veine, on y tient. D.T.R/R.T.D, on veut pas dévoiler tout le suspens de l’album, ceux qui l’achèteront et auront le livret dans les mains auront la réponse du saint graal !
Le groupe ayant récemment subi quelques changements de line-up, comment s’est passé le processus de composition de D.T.R. – R.T.D. ?
Old : Comme la plupart du temps pour Öld Black, je trouve les riffs de mon côté, je mets un peu en scène, puis on travaille tous en groupe, Öld Black reste un groupe, si mes riffs ne plaisent pas, qu’à cela ne tienne j’en chie d’autres qui plaisent à tout le gang. Les décisions finales se font la plupart du temps en unanimité. Pour le line up, c’est le line up présent au moment de la composition qui tranche, mais dans tous les cas, chacun apporte ses lignes et ses idées qui sont retenues ou non.
Côté son, vous affirmez vos influences comme venues du Black Metal, du Black’n’Roll, quels sont vos principales sources d’inspiration ? Que ce soit en terme de thématiques, de groupes, d’éléments extérieurs…
Old : Je pense qu’on pourrait même se définir comme les pionniers du Black’n’Roll en France. S’il y en à eu avant nous (on à commencé en 2006) je ne demande qu’à les entendre, et je suis ouvert à toute proposition. Niveau inspiration, on reste Black Metal, mais pour ma part je compose les titres avec toutes mes influences rock’n’roll donc forcément ça se ressent dans les compos. Pour les groupes, je pourrais jamais te les citer tous tellement la liste est longue, mais pour ma part je suis un gros fana de Motôrhead comme je disais plus haut, j’adore les Doors, Nashville Pussy,… pour la part Black : Craft, Darkthrone, Kill, Aura Noir, Archgoat, Pest (swe),… et j’ai certain autre penchant qui n’ont rien à voir, certaine variété française, et du Rap Old School, je suis un fan de Cypress Hill par exemple. Les éléments, c’est simple, il n’y à qu’a regarder ce qu’il se passe autour de nous, l’etat de l’humanité, des égoïstes qui seraient prêts à vendre pères et mères pour une poigné d’oseille, ça donne envie de picoler, se droguer, et j’en passe de toute ces débauches qui font qu’on se sent vivant et qu’on oublie un peu tout ce grand bazar !!!
Comment vous êtes-vous orientés vers le Black Metal, et pourquoi avoir choisi un son si brut et abrasif alors que la “tendance” est plutôt située dans les productions très travaillées ?
Old : Contrairement à beaucoup de groupe qui vendent leur cul juste pour la gloire, on a pas oublié d’où on vient, ça fait plus de 20 ans qu’on berce dans le Black Metal, c’est une musique primitive, brut et abrasive comme tu dis, on reste Old School, Öld Black ne changera pas ce côté, notre son sera peut être un peu plus travaillé avec le temps, peut-être qu’on aura accès à de plus grosses scène, mais on restera dans ce milieu underground car c’est de là qu’on vient. On s’y est orienté naturellement, on avait dans les 15 ans on cherché plus extrême que Manson, Slipknot, etc… Et faut dire qu’a cet âge là quand tu découvre le Black avec des albums de Darkthrone, Mayhem, Burzum… !!! Mes aïeux… ça fait quelque chose et la tu décroche plus…
Je sais que c’est une question difficile, mais est-ce que tu as un morceau préféré sur cet album ? Ou celui qui t’a semblé le plus naturel à composer ?
Old : Oui c’est assez difficile, pour ma part je pense que c’est D.T.R/R.T.D, car elle pue le rock’n’roll à plein nez, et tu l’a bien compris c’est mon fer de lance !!! Mais j’aime tous les titres qui sont tous assez différent tout en étant pareil (ça veut rien dire tu me dira). La plus naturel à composé à été Tribute to Prostitute. Tout comme Just Fucking Christ du premier album (que je considère comme LA chanson qui représente ÖB) on l’avait composé en mode bœuf lors d’une répète, riff improvisé pour le début, la suite m’était venue naturellement par la suite chez moi.
D.T.R. – R.T.D. est promu via l’agence de com M&O Office agency, comment se passe votre partenariat ?
Old : A merveille ! Le taf est fait. C’est tout nouveau pour nous on a toujours travaillé en autoprod et solo dans notre coin.
Je n’ai jamais eu l’occasion de vous voir en live, comment vivez-vous un live au sein du groupe ? Avez-vous un rituel, ou des petites habitudes avant de monter sur scène ?
Old : Ahahah, une trace de speed, des bières pour la scène voir du jack lorsque l’orga est généreuse et en avant Guingamp !!! J’espère pour toi que tu auras cette occasion de nous voir, öld black est avant tout un groupe live ! On vit très bien ces moments c’est plaisant pour nous de voir les gens hocher les caboches quand on claque notre Black’n’Roll qui groove !!!
Quels sont les prochains projets pour Öld Black ?
Old : Alors, l’année prochaine le groupe aura 20 ans d’existence, pour l’occasion on essaiera de sortir un EP de très vieux titres inédits… Avec un nouveau titre spécial pour cet EP. Ensuite on se penchera sur le 3ème album. Est-ce qu’il y a des musiciens ou artistes avec lesquels vous souhaiteriez collaborer dans le futur ?
Old : Oui 2 groupes Allemands, je ne citerais pas le nom sinon il n’y a plus de surprise… Après pas de groupes en particulier, mais on aimerait faire un split avec un groupe assez Rock’n’Roll d’un pays étranger.
Pensez-vous vous être amélioré en tant que musicien avec cet album ?
Old : Ah oui bien sûr, je pense même que ça se ressent sur l’album d’ailleurs.
Avec quels groupes rêves-tu de jouer ? Je te laisse imaginer ta date de rêve avec Öld Black en ouverture, et trois autres groupes.
Old : Question très complexe il y en a tellement… Une date qui ne serait ma foi pas dégueulasse, Öld Black, Old (de), Kill (swe), Craft pourquoi pas.

A few questions for Old, singer/guitarist and composer of the band Öld Black, on the release of their new album, D.T.R. – R.T.D..
Hello, and first of all, thank you for taking the time to talk to me! Without ever using the term “Black Metal,” how would you describe the band Öld Black?
Old: Hi amigos! Ahaha, that’s a good question, I’ll answer it in one word: ROCK’N’ROLL!!!!
Where does the name Öld Black come from and how do you personally relate it to the band’s music? Why did you spell it with an umlaut on the Ö?
Old: Well, it’s super simple. Öld because Öld Black is a band that is and will remain old-school, rooted in the ancient times of dirty, underground, infamous Black Metal (I’m allowed to use the word now), hence the “black.” The umlaut obviously comes from Motörhead, because I’m a huge fan of that band, and also because we think that famous “ö” looks mega Rock‘n’Roll. At the time, the umlaut wasn’t there, but we changed the logo recently and added it.
Your new EP, D.T.R. – R.T.D., is coming out in a few weeks. How are you feeling within the band? Have you had any feedback about it yet?
Old: Small correction, it’s an album, 7 tracks, 40 minutes of Black’n’Roll, but really very n’roll, not that n’roll because you hear 2 groove riffs on the album. For the moment, only some media outlets have had access to the complete album, the rest of the plebs have only had a taste, one track, so for the moment there has been very little feedback, but most of it has been positive.
How would you sum up D.T.R. – R.T.D. in three words? What does “D.T.R. – R.T.D.” mean, anyway?
Old: So, in three words… Debauchery, blasphemy, Rock‘n’roll! That’s a lot of Rock‘n’Roll, I know, but Öld Black is really in that vein, and we’re sticking to it. D.T.R/R.T.D, we don’t want to give away all the suspense of the album, those who buy it and have the booklet in their hands will have the answer to the holy grail!
The band has recently undergone some lineup changes, how did the songwriting process for D.T.R. – R.T.D. go?
Old: As is usually the case with Öld Black, I come up with the riffs on my own, I arrange them a bit, and then we all work on them as a group. Öld Black is still a band, so if my riffs don’t appeal to everyone, no problem, I’ll come up with some others that the whole gang likes. The final decisions are usually made unanimously. As for the lineup, it’s the lineup present at the time of composition that decides, but in any case, everyone contributes their lines and ideas, which may or may not be used.
In terms of sound, you claim your influences come from Black Metal and Black’n’Roll. What are your main sources of inspiration? Whether in terms of themes, bands, external elements…
Old: I think we could even define ourselves as the pioneers of Black’n’Roll in France. If there were any before us (we started in 2006), I’d love to hear them, and I’m open to any suggestions. In terms of inspiration, we’re still Black Metal, but for my part, I compose the songs with all my Rock’n’Roll influences, so obviously that comes through in the compositions. As for bands, I could never name them all because the list is so long, but personally I’m a big fan of Motörhead, as I said earlier, I love The Doors, Nashville Pussy… On the Black side: Craft, Darkthrone, Kill, Aura Noir, Archgoat, Pest (Swe)… I also have other interests that are completely unrelated, such as certain French pop music and old-school Rap. I’m a fan of Cypress Hill, for example. The elements are simple. you just have to look at what’s going on around us, the state of humanity, selfish people who would sell their fathers and mothers for a handful of cash. It makes you want to drink, do drugs, and all that debauchery that makes you feel alive and forget about all this mess!
How did you get into Black Metal, and why did you choose such a raw and abrasive sound when the “trend” is more toward highly polished productions?
Old: Unlike a lot of bands who sell their souls just for fame, we haven’t forgotten where we came from. We’ve been rocking Black Metal for over 20 years, it’s primitive, raw and abrasive music, as you say, we’re staying Old School, Öld Black won’t change that side of things, our sound may become a little more polished over time, maybe we’ll get access to bigger stages, but we’ll stay in the underground scene because that’s where we come from. We gravitated towards it naturally. When we were around 15, we were looking for something more extreme than Manson, Slipknot, etc. And I have to say, at that age, when you discover Black Metal with albums by Darkthrone, Mayhem, Burzum…!!! My ancestors… it does something to you and then you’re hooked…
I know it’s a difficult question, but do you have a favorite track on this album? Or one that seemed the most natural to compose?
Old: Yes, it’s quite difficult. For me, I think it’s D.T.R/R.T.D, because it reeks of Rock‘n’Roll, and as you know, that’s my spearhead! But I love all the tracks, which are all quite different while still being similar (that doesn’t make sense, I know). The most natural to compose was Tribute to Prostitute. Just like Just Fucking Christ from the first album (which I consider to be THE song that represents ÖB), we composed it during a jam session at rehearsal, with an improvised riff for the beginning, and the rest came to me naturally later at home.
D.T.R. – R.T.D. is promoted by the M&O Office agency. How is your partnership going?
Old: It’s going great! The job is done. It’s all new to us, we’ve always worked independently and solo in our corner.
I’ve never had the opportunity to see you live, how do you experience a live show within the band? Do you have any rituals or little habits before going on stage?
Old: Ahahah, a trace of speed, beers for the stage, or even Jack Daniel’s when the organizers are generous, and let’s go Guingamp (French idiom taken from a football club, but which is common use to say “here we go”, ed.)!!! I hope for your sake that you’ll have the opportunity to see us, because Öld Black is above all a live band! We really enjoy these moments, it’s fun for us to see people nodding their heads when we play our groovy Black’n’Roll!!!
What are Öld Black‘s next projects?
Old: Well, next year the band will have been around for 20 years, so for the occasion we’ll try to release an EP of very old unreleased tracks… With a new track especially for this EP. Then we’ll start working on our third album. At the same time, we’ll play wherever we’re asked to. Do you think you’ve improved as a musician with this album?
Old: Oh yes, of course, I even think you can hear it on the album.
Which bands do you dream of playing with? I’ll let you imagine your dream date with Öld Black as the opening act and three other bands.
Old: That’s a very difficult question, there are so many… A date that wouldn’t be too bad would be Öld Black, Old (de), Kill (swe), Craft, why not.
