The 69 Eyes vampires never die.
Following their signing with BLKIIBLK, Jyrki 69 (vocals), Bazie (guitar/backing vocals), Timo-Timo (guitar), Archzie (bass/backing vocals), and Jussi 69 (drums) bring us a new EP, I Survive.
The band kicks things off strong with title track I Survive, a naturally groovy and catchy song where a few quieter sections contrast with the unifying choruses, but we should also note the appearance of guitarist Steve Stevens (ex-Billy Idol) for a touch of more ethereal melancholy. The infectious energy returns, then takes a different turn with Cold Sweat, a Thin Lizzy cover that the band effortlessly makes their own while still making it a bit darker, retaining its liveliness and legendary guitar parts. Ending soberly, the track gives way to In The Misery, a perfect interpretation of Gothic Rock that blends passion and nostalgia, dynamism and the savory bitterness that settles in our minds as we hum along with the musicians, but the track eventually gives way to Devil’s Rose, the final composition, where this time it’s Ed Mundell (ex-Monster Magnet, ex-Atomic Bitchwax) who joins the Helsinki Vampires to develop the catchy, heavy metal-infused side already very much present, bringing the EP to a close.
I’m never disappointed by The 69 Eyes, and even though the band has mellowed over the years, I Survive keeps us going until the next album with a few catchy tracks that are brimming with energetic melancholy!
