Dépérir is more motivated than ever.
Formed in France fifteen years ago but since relocating to Quebec, the band led by Nico Reymond (guitar, formerly of Decent) and Sortheii (drums, L’Antre Deux Terres, formerly of Daedalion), now rounded out by Bob Girard (vocals, ex-Ancestors Revenge), Wax Lamontagne (guitar), and Pascal Moses (bass, Hak-Ed Damm, ex-Ancestors Revenge), has announced the 2026 release of its new EP, War E.P., in collaboration with Adipocere Records.
The album kicks off with the icy Blood Spill, a highly aggressive opening track rooted in Black Metal’s martial mysteries, occasionally injecting a touch of Black/Death Metal while retaining its sinister and vicious edge that constantly renews the assault, eventually leading into Cold War, the second track with its ethereal harmonies. The dissonant sound is quite different, though it still features ferocious accelerations; however, the ethereal dimension of the track is most evident in the first part, while a sample lends it a more aggressive dynamic, even offering a piercing solo before a new wave of jagged violence leads us into Payback. Once again, the track draws its energy from the roots of old-school black metal, but treats listeners to some hypnotic and interesting lead sections before taking a detour through other frozen lands for CCCP, the final and highly catchy track where screams and choruses combine to add an extra touch of fury, bringing the EP to a close with the sound of boots.
I personally discovered Dépérir live at the end of their short May tour, and I was immediately blown away by their fury. The War EP perfectly captures what I heard there, whether it’s coldness or aggression, and deserves far more recognition!
