In 2000, Juha Raivio (guitar) and Pasi Pasanen (drum) created the Finnish band Swallow The Sun. Blending Melodic Death Metal and Doom Death Metal, some songs also sound like Gothic Metal. Their first demo record was only released in 2003 and their first album came soon after this. Swallow The Sun recorded and released a triple album, in the last months of 2015, in which we can find three different styles since Doom Death is spread  through the first CD, the second one is an acoustic version and the last one is more in a Funeral Doom style. Even if all the reviews are of one mind, I discovered the band earlier with their album New Moon, released in 2009.

C’est en l’an 2000 que Juha Raivio (guitare) et Pasi Pasanen (batterie) fondent le groupe finlandais Swallow The Sun. Mêlant Death Mélodique et Doom Death, certaines compositions tirent également sur le Metal Gothique. Leur première démo ne sortira qu’en 2003, et le premier album suivra rapidement. Swallow The Sun a sorti fin 2015 un triple album couvrant trois styles différents : Doom Death mélodique pour le premier CD, acoustique uniquement pour le deuxième, et Funeral Doom sur le troisième. Si les critiques sont unanimes, c’est avec le quatrième album, New Moon sorti en 2009, que j’ai découvert le groupe.

If there’s only one of the Doom Death pioneers whose sound doesn’t change through years, it’s obviously My Dying Bride. Created in 1990 in England alongside of Anathema and Paradise Lost, the only remaining former members are guitarists Calvin Robertshaw (who left in 1999 but comes back in 2014) and Andrew Craighan, and also Aaron Stainthorpe, the singer. Lena Abé (bass) joined in 2007 after Adrian “Ade” Jackson’s departure and Shaun Macgowan (keyboard and violin) gathered in 2009 to substitute Katie Stone. They don’t have a full time drummer, but the work incomes to Dan “Storm” Mullins on stage.

S’il y a bien un seul des pionniers du Doom Death dont le son n’a pas changé au fil du temps, c’est bien My Dying Bride. Formés en 1990 en Angleterre aux côtés d’Anathema et Paradise Lost, les seuls membres d’origine sont les guitaristes Calvin Robertshaw (parti en 1999 mais revenu en 2014) et Andrew Craighan, ainsi que le chanteur Aaron Stainthorpe. Lena Abé (basse) les a rejoints en 2007 après le départ d’Adrian “Ade” Jackson, et Shaun Macgowan (clavier et violon) en 2009 pour remplacer Katie Stone. Ils n’ont pas de batteur permanent, mais c’est Dan “Storm” Mullins qui assure le live.
