Review 1381 : Soul Dissolution – Sora – English

Soul Dissolution celebrates its tenth anniversary with a third album.

Formed in 2012 in Belgium, the band consisting of Jabawock (instrumentals/voices, Marche Funèbre, L’Hiver en Deuil), Acharan (vocals, L’Hiver en Deuil) and Threnos (drums, L’Hiver en Deuil, ex-Spectral Damnation) announces the release of Soma on Viridian Flame Records.

The album starts with the first notes of SORA I which easily mesmerize us before the heavy and haunting rhythmic nails us to the ground, accompanied by raw and melancholic vocals. The rhythmic lets heady harmonics connect its different parts, whether soft or more solid ones while leading us to SORA II, a faster and wilder second part which welcomes blast and sharp leads. The vocal parts follow this intensity while remaining aggressive and rocky before the general atmosphere calms down again for the long SORA III which comes to close this triptych with a fix of softness but also Prog and Post-Metal elements. Clean vocals join the wave of quietness which soon explodes in rage again, creating a striking contrast with the most soothing elements. The hoarse screams will again join the wave of power before it ends its race in the nothingness to let The Absolving Tide take over with worrying sounds. Saturation will quickly resurface to carry us away in its storm which mixes airy notes and its massive basis topped by tortured vocals, then a light distant thunder sounds the end of the title, before With Open Heart comes to close the album with a mixing of mysterious darkness and false quietness. The track’s Doom-ish slowness adds an additional oppressive and visceral aspect to allow the band to leave us on a seizing note.

With Sora, Soul Dissolution unveils an additional part of their universe. Whether the band’s first releases were anchored in Post-Black, this album also lets Post-Metal and cold Doom influences express themselves, creating a striking diversity.
