Review 1388 : Upon Your Grave – Gold & Decay – English

After a few years without news, Upon Your Grave is back with a new EP.

Formed in 2009 in Canada, the band composed of Jordan Jolicoeur (vocals), Alex Grave (guitar/noise), Sim Diamond (guitar), Sebastien Gagné (drums) and Yan Pelletier (bass) already released a demo in 2012, followed by an album in 2013. In 2022, the band announced the release of Gold & Decay.

We have Alex Rancourt on bass, as well as Christian Donaldson (Cryptopsy) on mixing and mastering.

Revived, the short introductory sample, reveals a melancholic melody accompanied by few hits before From Beyond offers its catchy and jerky riffs with Metalcore sounds. The aggressive vocal parts quickly join the energetic and sometimes groovy mix, which knows how to accelerate to reveal devastating melodies or effective moshparts, then Pandora takes over with similar elements to feed its solid rhythmic. The track also features massive Beatdown-influenced breaks, while Supremacy plays on dissonant sounds coupled with aggressive riffs to offer an interesting and catchy diversity. The wild screams fuel the track’s very raw atmosphere while placing ripping leads before letting Transcend close the EP with very straightforward sounds, tempered by catchy moshparts. Built for the stage, the track has every chance of making you shake your head while including some melodic leads.

Ten years after their first demo, Upon Your Grave is still going strong, and their rage remains alive. Gold & Decay allows musicians to return to the forefront of the scene by affirming their aggressive roots.
