Review 1390 : Hanghedief – Overduyvelsche Boosheit – English

Hanghedief unveils its first EP.

Created by Pz. Kpfw (Pox, Possession…) in Belgium, the project announces the release of Overduyvelsche Boosheit on Iron Bonehead in 2022.

With its mystical and mysterious introduction, 1611, V.C., the first track, prepares us for the wave of Old School Black Metal with a sharp sound populated by possessed ghostly screams. Riffs are extremely effective and unhealthy, coupling ripping leads with a solid basis, and the song leads us to 1634, K.M., a rather similar composition which uses an ice-cold atmosphere to strengthen its shrilling sounds. Energetic patterns mix with raw screams and medieval-influenced leads, and then Meesters van de Hooge Wercken gives us a moment of respite with this long keyboard interlude. Suddenly, a rhythmic beat surfaces, accompanied by howls of despair, then 1638, D.V.J. takes over with a dark introduction, joined by this long composition’s melancholic and aggressive riffs. The track remains anchored in a very raw and straightforward Black Metal without forgetting heady melodies, just like Longing For The Ancient Kingdom, a composition from the legendary Ancient Rites, that the band decided to cover to close the EP, respecting the original work while adding its macabre touch.

Hanghedief anchors itself in the most Old School sounds of Black Metal with this EP and its marked influences. The nostalgic of the 90’s releases will find their happiness with Overduyvelsche Boosheit.
