Few questions to Raff Sangiorgio, longtime guitarist and songwriter for the Italian Death Metal band Gory Blister.
Hello and first of all, thank you very much for your time! Could you please introduce yourself and the band Gory Blister without using the usual musical labels, such as “Death Metal” ?
Raff Sangiorgio (guitar): Hi Acta Infernalis, this is Raff Sangiorgio, guitar player and songwriter for the band Gory Blister. Gory Blister is not easily defined by conventional music labels. We are a sonic force that delves into the depths of intensity, pushing boundaries, and crafting a unique amalgamation of sounds and emotions that transcend genres.
How do you personally link the name Gory Blister to the band’s music identity?
Raff: The name « Gory Blister » reflects the visceral and impactful nature of our music. It hints at the raw, unfiltered emotions and intense sonic experiences that we aim to deliver to our listeners.
The band’s new full-length, Reborn from Hatred, is already out, how do you feel about it?
Raff: I’m thrilled, Reborn from Hatred is the culmination of our creative efforts and we are excited to release it worldwide. It represents the our best album ever. While we can’t predict how it will be received, we are eager to hear feedback from our fans and the metal community. We sincerely hope that the metal community will love Reborn from Hatred and some songs from the album will become their all-time favorites to listen to in their daily playlists.

Raff: Good response from socials comments, and good reviews from the insiders.
How would you sum Reborn from Hatred’s identity up in only three words?
Raff: In three words, Reborn from Hatred can be described as: Aggressive, Dynamic, Uncompromising.
How did the composition process happen for Reborn from Hatred? Did you notice some changes or evolutions compared to the previous album?
Raff: The composition process for Reborn from Hatred involved a collaborative effort among the band members, with each member contributing their ideas and influences. We aimed to evolve our sound while staying true to our roots, resulting in a more mature and diverse album compared to our previous work. The mixing was an added value for this album. We changed work teams, and for this album we decided to collaborate with Fascination Street Studios in Sweden so that their experience with big names in the scene, such as Sepultura, Kreator, Arch Enemy just to name a few, could enhance the songwriting of Reborn From Hatred.
What about the artwork, what were the guidelines and how do they fit with the music you created?
Raff: The artwork for the album was guided by the idea of visually representing the intensity and darkness of the music. It serves as a gateway into the world we’ve created with this album, enhancing the overall experience for the listeners. Augusto Peixoto, the Portuguese artist we hired, did an excellent job in interpreting our requests.
The band melts Old School stuff with some Technical elements, how do you create Gory Blister’s identity? Same question about vocals?
Raff: Gory Blister‘s identity is forged through a balance of Old School elements and Technical prowess. Our vocals, driven by emotion and aggression, add another layer to our sonic identity, creating a unique blend of heaviness and complexity.
How do you find a balance between effective moshparts and heady leads?
Raff: Finding a balance between mosh-inducing sections and intricate solo passages isn’t trivial, but we try, and for this album it was a natural outcome of our creative process. It’s about letting the music flow organically, with each part serving the overall narrative of the song.
Maybe you have a favorite song on this album? Or maybe the hardest one to achieve for the album?
Raff: Although each track on the album has its own character and meaning, « favorites » often change with time and mood, that’s a fact. The most difficult songs to make for Reborn from Hatred were Reborn From Hatred and Signs from Beyond, they have complex arrangements and a guitar riffing that is not easy to perform.
Even if the band has now celebrated its 30rd anniversary, how do you find your inspiration, “despite” new members?
Raff: Sometimes I ask myself this too, but I must confess that my inspiration remains constant, fueled by the passion for music and the desire to always improve, song after song, album after album, my creative boundaries. New members bring new perspectives, increasing our collective creativity, keeping our sound vibrant.
Do you think you improved yourself as a musician and songwriter with this new record?
Raff: Of course yes, with each new album we aim to grow as musicians and authors. Reborn from Hatred represents another step in our musical evolution, showcasing our continuous improvement and exploration.
How do you feel when you’re on stage? What about playing in France? What’s your plan about playing live?
Raff: Being on stage is challenging and exiting in the same time, it’s our natural dimension. Unfortunately, nowadays it is always difficult to do a real tour. In the past we had some good experiences in France, during the European tour with Sadus we played in Paris at the venue La Loco (now “La Machine du Moulin Rouge”, ed.), and in Rennes (I don’t remember the name of the venue). We still plan to perform live to support Reborn from Hatred, and connect with our audiences, old and new.
Are there any musicians or artists you would like to collaborate with? Whether it is for one song, or maybe more.
Raff: There are many talented musicians and artists we would love to collaborate with, although the details will depend on the project. In the past we collaborated with Karl Sanders from Nile, he sang on 2 of our songs on the Earth-Sick album.
If you had to organize a concert for Reborn from Hatred’s release show, which bands would you love to play with? I let you create a poster with Gory Blister and three other bands!
Raff: If we were to organize a concert for Reborn from Hatred, we would love to share the stage with bands that share our intensity and creativity. Our dream lineup could include Carcass, Gojira, Kreator, creating a poster that promises an unforgettable night of extreme music… LOL!!!

Gory Blister n’est pas facilement défini par les étiquettes musicales conventionnelles. Nous sommes une force sonore qui plonge dans les profondeurs de l’intensité, repoussant les limites et créant un amalgame unique de sons et d’émotions qui transcendent les genres.
Comment associes-tu personnellement le nom Gory Blister à l’identité musicale du groupe ?
Raff : Le nom « Gory Blister » reflète la nature viscérale et percutante de notre musique. Il évoque les émotions brutes, non filtrées et les expériences sonores intenses que nous voulons offrir à nos auditeurs.
Le nouvel album du groupe, Reborn from Hatred, est déjà sorti, qu’en pensez-vous ?
Raff : Je suis ravi, Reborn from Hatred est l’aboutissement de nos efforts créatifs et nous sommes ravis de le sortir dans le monde entier. C’est notre meilleur album. Bien que nous ne puissions pas prédire comment il sera reçu, nous sommes impatients d’entendre les réactions de nos fans et de la communauté Metal. Nous espérons sincèrement que la communauté Metal aimera Reborn from Hatred et que certaines chansons de l’album deviendront leurs favoris dans leurs playlists quotidiennes.
Avez-vous déjà des retours ?
Raff : De bonnes réactions sur les réseaux sociaux et de bonnes critiques de la part des initiés.
Comment résumerais-tu l’identité de Reborn from Hatred en seulement trois mots ?
Raff : En trois mots, Reborn from Hatred peut être décrit comme suit : agressif, dynamique, sans compromis.
Comment s’est déroulé le processus de composition de Reborn from Hatred ? As-tu remarqué des changements ou des évolutions par rapport à l’album précédent ?
Raff : Le processus de composition de Reborn from Hatred a impliqué un effort de collaboration entre les membres du groupe, chacun apportant ses idées et ses influences. Nous avons cherché à faire évoluer notre son tout en restant fidèles à nos racines, ce qui a donné un album plus mature et plus diversifié par rapport à nos travaux précédents. Le mixage a été une valeur ajoutée pour cet album. Nous avons changé d’équipe, et pour cet album nous avons décidé de collaborer avec Fascination Street Studios en Suède afin que leur expérience avec les grands noms de la scène, tels que Sepultura, Kreator, Arch Enemy, pour n’en citer que quelques-uns, puisse améliorer l’écriture de Reborn From Hatred.
Qu’en est-il de l’artwork, quelles étaient les lignes directrices et comment s’accordent-elles avec la musique que vous avez créée ?
Raff : L’artwork de l’album a été guidé par l’idée de représenter visuellement l’intensité et la noirceur de la musique. Elle sert de porte d’entrée dans le monde que nous avons créé avec cet album, améliorant ainsi l’expérience globale des auditeurs. Augusto Peixoto, l’artiste portugais que nous avons engagé, a fait un excellent travail d’interprétation de nos demandes.
Le groupe mélange des éléments Old School avec des éléments techniques, comment créez-vous l’identité de Gory Blister ? Même question pour le chant ?
Raff : L’identité de Gory Blister est forgée par un équilibre entre des éléments Old School et des prouesses techniques. Nos paroles, portées par l’émotion et l’agression, ajoutent une autre couche à notre identité sonore, créant un mélange unique de lourdeur et de complexité.
Comment trouvez-vous l’équilibre entre les moshparts efficaces et les leads entêtants ?
Raff : Trouver l’équilibre entre les sections qui déclenchent les moshs et les passages solo complexes n’est pas trivial, mais nous essayons, et pour cet album, c’était un résultat naturel de notre processus créatif. Il s’agit de laisser la musique s’écouler organiquement, chaque partie servant la narration globale de la chanson.
Est-ce que tu as une chanson préférée sur cet album ? Ou peut-être celle qui a été la plus difficile à réaliser pour l’album ?
Raff : Bien que chaque morceau de l’album ait son propre caractère et sa propre signification, les « favoris » changent souvent avec le temps et l’humeur, c’est un fait. Les chansons les plus difficiles à réaliser pour Reborn from Hatred ont été Reborn From Hatred et Signs from Beyond, elles ont des arrangements complexes et des riffs de guitare qui ne sont pas faciles à interpréter.
Même si le groupe a fêté son 30ème anniversaire, comment trouvez-vous votre inspiration, « malgré » les nouveaux membres ?
Raff : Je me pose parfois la question, mais je dois avouer que mon inspiration reste constante, alimentée par la passion pour la musique et le désir de toujours améliorer, chanson après chanson, album après album, mes limites créatives. Les nouveaux membres apportent de nouvelles perspectives, ce qui accroît notre créativité collective et maintient la vitalité de notre son.
Penses-tu t’être amélioré en tant que musicien et compositeur avec ce nouvel album ?
Raff : Bien sûr que oui, avec chaque nouvel album, nous cherchons à grandir en tant que musiciens et auteurs. Reborn from Hatred représente une nouvelle étape dans notre évolution musicale, mettant en avant notre amélioration et notre exploration continues.
Comment te sens-tu lorsque vous êtes sur scène ? Qu’en est-il des concerts en France ? Quels sont vos plans concernant les futurs lives ?
Raff : Être sur scène est à la fois stimulant et excitant, c’est notre dimension naturelle. Malheureusement, de nos jours, il est toujours difficile de faire une vraie tournée. Par le passé, nous avons eu de bonnes expériences en France, lors de la tournée européenne avec Sadus, nous avons joué à Paris dans la salle La Loco (maintenant « La Machine du Moulin Rouge« , ndlr), et à Rennes (je ne me souviens plus du nom de la salle). Nous avons toujours l’intention de nous produire en concert pour soutenir Reborn from Hatred, et nous connecter avec notre public, ancien et nouveau.
Y a-t-il des musiciens ou des artistes avec lesquels vous aimeriez collaborer ? Que ce soit pour une chanson, ou peut-être plus.
Raff : Il y a beaucoup de musiciens et d’artistes talentueux avec lesquels nous aimerions collaborer, même si les détails dépendent du projet. Dans le passé, nous avons collaboré avec Karl Sanders de Nile, il a chanté sur deux de nos chansons sur l’album Earth-Sick.
Si vous deviez organiser un concert pour la sortie de Reborn from Hatred, avec quels groupes aimeriez-vous jouer ? Je te laisse créer une affiche avec Gory Blister et trois autres groupes !
Raff : Si nous devions organiser un concert pour Reborn from Hatred, nous aimerions partager la scène avec des groupes qui partagent notre intensité et notre créativité. Notre line up de rêve pourrait inclure Carcass, Gojira, Kreator, créant ainsi une affiche qui promet une nuit inoubliable de musique extrême… LOL !!!
