Review 2667 : Warfield – With The Old Breed – English

Warfield return to their roots.

For their second album, With The Old Breed, the German trio comprising Johannes Clemens (vocals/bass), Matthias Clemens (guitar) and Dominik Marx (drums) have not only changed their logo, but also signed with Napalm Records.

Their debut album (dating from 2018) having been rather well received by the community, the band decided to stick to the same aggressive Thrash Metal basics, and we can see this right from the first track, Melting Mass, which although a little short, has everything it takes to hit hard: aggressive riffs, vindictive vocals, and above all an Old School mix. The same is true of Appetitive Aggression, which not only rattles skulls but also provokes a number of moshes, before the trio give us a moment’s respite with the introductory sample of Soul Conqueror. Still inspired by their German roots, the band indulge in a few crazier leads to accompany the solid, catchy base, which finally picks up speed with Fragmentation, featuring bloody Heavy influences that fit perfectly with the sustained pace. The final gets a little heavier, then kicks off again with Lament of the White Realm, where the blast reigns supreme, while the vocal parts give it a slightly macabre atmosphere, while the break makes it very catchy again. The final solo is followed by a lull, before Tie The Rope takes over with a slightly slower pace at first, but the long-awaited explosion comes, of course, only to return to cruising speed and join Inhibition Atrophy, which doesn’t wait for permission to ignite and hit us with sharp riffs like they used to do in the 80s. Back to the jerky rhythm with Dogs For Defence, whose infectious energy will make the hair on the front rows of any concert hall or festival stand on end, but the band will experiment with GASP, the next track. Much slower and much longer (over seven minutes) than the others, it offers a heavy, then ominous sound when a few samples join the mix, and then on the oppressive final before joining With the Old Breed, the eponymous track where the rhythm picks up again to offer us one last headbanging session. The vinyl versions prolong the pleasure with F# (Wake Up), a cover of the famous Nuclear Assault performed at full speed and perfectly in keeping with the band’s style.

Warfield may still be considered a young band, but their style has already been honed in just two albums! With The Old Breed is a true cry of revolt in Old School Thrash sauce, sure to please nostalgic fans!
