Review 2777 : Marea – Adrift – English

A new journey for Marea.

Following his first release, Matteo Balzarini (vocals/guitar/bass), still accompanied by drummer Alessandro Mori (Entirety, Hanormale, Total Death, ex-Devoid of Thought), has created Adrift, his new EP, released with Masked Dead Records.

We begin with the dissonance of Useless, a soothing yet intense opening track that eventually gives way to abrasive and tortured vocals accompanying the heavy flow. The harmonics guide our minds through the most aggressive passages, which ultimately lead to Rusted, where tranquility returns, only to be disturbed once again by the vocalist’s visceral roars, reviving the DSBM influences that blend perfectly with the suffocating atmosphere. The sound eventually fades away before joining Marea, the last of the three compositions, which slowly hypnotizes us before letting saturation embellish its rhythm, which progresses at its own pace without any vocals until a distant scream that literally chills our blood and haunts the final part.

I personally loved Marea‘s first album, and Adrift has once again enchanted me, whether through its soaring rhythms or its striking vocals. The project is still young, but it clearly has its place in the world of melancholy.
