Quelques questions posées au chanteur Andreas “Gerre” Geremia, membre du légendaire groupe de Thrash Metal allemand Tankard, via Zoom, la veille de leur concert au Hellfest 2025.
Tout d’abord, comment vas-tu ?
Andreas “Gerre” Geremia (chant) : Je vais bien ! Je me prépare à partir demain pour le Hellfest et j’ai vraiment hâte de jouer dans ce grand festival après tant d’années. C’était il y a environ 15 ans, la première et dernière fois, en 2010. Nous avons donc vraiment hâte de voir ce qui va se passer demain. J’espère que beaucoup de fans de Thrash Metal seront là.
J’en suis sûr ! Comme tu l’as dit, Tankard jouera demain au Hellfest. Comment te sens-tu par rapport au concert ?
Gerre : Oui, nous avons une heure de temps et je pense que nous sommes vraiment prêts. Nous avons vraiment hâte. Je pense que nous allons jouer dans une très grande tente. La setlist est prête et il y aura une diffusion en direct sur Arte ou ils la diffuseront une heure plus tard, mais Tankard à la télévision, c’est cool ! J’espère donc que nous passerons un bon moment avec les groupes qui suivront Tankard, Sacred Reich et Exodus. Je pense qu’il y aura des fans de Thrash Metal dans cette tente !
Oui, sans aucun doute. Comment vous êtes-vous préparés pour le concert ?
Gerre : Nous n’avons pas répété cette semaine, car en ce moment, nous jouons toutes les semaines et nous n’avons rien de spécial à préparer pour demain.
Que signifie pour Tankard et pour toi personnellement de jouer au Hellfest ?
Gerre : Le Hellfest est bien sûr le plus grand et le plus important festival de France. Je pense qu’il est aussi important que le Wacken, et nous sommes très fiers de participer au festival cette année. J’espère que nous pourrons peut-être toucher de nouveaux fans. Ce serait génial. Et puis, il y a l’ambiance, le fait de voir d’autres concerts et de passer un bon moment. Nous avons vraiment hâte d’y être.
Votre dernier album s’intitule Pavlov’s Dogs et est sorti en 2022. Que penses-tu de cet album aujourd’hui ?
Gerre : Je suis toujours satisfait de l’album, du résultat. En fait, nous étions pour la première fois en Allemagne dans le top 10 des ventes d’albums officiels, à la 8e place. C’était un très grand succès, il y a 3 ans. Et nous jouons toujours deux chansons de cet album en live, y compris demain. Il y aura donc un autre album de Tankard, mais nous ne savons pas exactement quand et aucune chanson n’est encore prête, mais il y aura bien sûr un autre album studio de Tankard. Cela prend plus de temps qu’il y a 20 ans, quand nous étions un peu plus jeunes, tout va un peu plus vite. Mais il y en aura un. Mais nous ne savons pas exactement si ce sera l’année prochaine, dans deux ans, je ne sais pas.
Au moins, il y en a un autre qui arrive, ça me fait plaisir ! Tankard a toujours été un groupe majeur du thrash metal allemand. Que peux-tu dire de l’évolution de la scène thrash metal au fil des ans ?
Gerre : J’ai grandi avec la New Wave of British Heavy Metal à la fin des années 70, début des années 80, puis nous avons entendu… je ne sais pas, le premier album d’Exodus, le premier Metallica, le premier album de Slayer, le premier album d’Exciter, et nous avons été vraiment contaminés. Je pense qu’à cette époque, beaucoup de groupes allemands ont commencé avec ce genre de musique et nous avons toujours une bonne scène Thrash Metal ici, bien sûr. Il y aura toujours des vagues, je dirais, au milieu des années 90 jusqu’à la fin des années 90, le Thrash Metal n’était pas très populaire. Le Heavy Metal en général n’était pas populaire, mais il n’a jamais disparu à 100 %. Il n’y a jamais eu de vague à 100 %. Je pense donc qu’il survivra et qu’il y aura toujours des vagues. Il sera plus ou moins populaire, mais je pense qu’il restera toujours une partie très importante de la scène metal dans son ensemble.
Tankard est un groupe que j’écoute depuis environ 20 ans maintenant, et vous parlez toujours de bière. Ma nouvelle question est donc évidente : pourquoi aimez-vous la bière et quelle est votre bière préférée ?
Gerre : Tout d’abord, ma bière préférée est toujours celle que nous avons en coulisses, car elle est gratuite. Donc, si tu écoutes Tankard depuis 20 ans, comme tu l’as mentionné, nous essayons toujours de faire une bonne combinaison de paroles sérieuses et de paroles drôles. Bien sûr, nous avons tout fait pour créer cette image avec des albums comme Chemical Invasion et The Morning After. Puis, au milieu des années 90, nous avons vraiment voulu nous débarrasser de cette image, mais bien sûr, nous avons complètement échoué aujourd’hui. Nous avons beaucoup de parodies et d’humour, nous parlons de notre propre image, mais depuis le deuxième album, il y a toujours eu et il y aura toujours le côté sérieux de Tankard avec des paroles sérieuses. Mais en général, Tankard est un groupe qui prend beaucoup de plaisir à jouer ce genre de musique sur scène et cette image drôle nous correspond vraiment mieux que cette image maléfique, tu sais, la guerre, Satan, la mort… Je ne sais pas. Donc, parfois, nous chantons des chansons sur la bière, mais nous avons aussi beaucoup de choses sérieuses et c’est la combinaison avec laquelle nous pouvons vivre.
Le groupe donne environ 20 à 30 concerts par an. Est-ce un choix de ne pas faire de longues tournées ?
Gerre : Nous avons tous un travail régulier, il est donc un peu difficile de consacrer toutes nos vacances et notre temps libre aux activités du groupe. D’un côté, nous sommes totalement indépendants. Nous pouvons faire ce que nous voulons, nous n’avons pas besoin de vivre de la musique. D’un autre côté, nous ne pouvons pas accepter toutes les offres que nous recevons, donc… Nous pourrions peut-être donner quelques concerts supplémentaires. J’aimerais beaucoup donner 5 concerts de plus, en particulier dans des pays où nous ne sommes jamais allés. Mais nous avons tous un emploi régulier, donc il n’est pas possible de partir en tournée pendant 6 mois ou quelque chose comme ça.

Gerre : Oh, tu portes un t-shirt Tankard, je vois ! Die with a Beer in your Hand !
Bien sûr, je l’ai acheté au Motocultor 2015 !
Question suivante : comme tu l’as mentionné, tu as grandi avec les groupes de Thrash Metal américains, et je trouve qu’il y a une différence entre le Thrash américain et le Thrash allemand. Est-ce que tu ressens aussi une différence dans le son ?
Gerre : Je pense que chaque groupe, qu’il soit américain ou européen, je ne parle pas de l’Allemagne, a son propre son. Je ne dirais pas qu’il existe un son Thrash allemand typique, les groupes ont tous un son différent, chacun a son propre style. Je comprends que tu puisses avoir un avis différent. Je pense que chaque groupe est unique et qu’il n’y a pas de son typique de la Bay Area, je veux dire. La Bay Area était l’endroit où tous les groupes jouaient et sont nés, mais je pense que chaque groupe a son propre son. Donc rien, rien n’est 100 % typique. Européen, allemand ou Bay Area, je ne dirais pas ça. Le Thrash est mondial et chaque groupe a son propre son.
Revenons au Hellfest, tu as dit que tu avais défini la setlist. Comment l’as-tu construite et comment comptes-tu communiquer avec le public ?
Gerre : La setlist, oui… On verra. Je n’ai pas encore de plan concernant ce que je vais dire au public. C’est vraiment spontané quand Tankard est en concert. Nous avons sorti 18 albums complets. Il est bien sûr toujours très difficile de construire une setlist. Nous jouerons donc deux chansons de notre dernier album, ainsi que quelques morceaux phares du début de notre carrière… Nous essayons toujours de faire un bon mélange. Quant à ce que je vais dire au public, nous verrons bien. Je ne sais pas encore ce soir. Nous verrons sur le moment. Nous verrons bien.
Comme tu l’as dit, les groupes qui jouent après Tankard sont Sacred Reich et Exodus. As-tu l’intention d’aller voir d’autres groupes au Hellfest ?
Gerre : J’ai vraiment envie de voir The Cult, mais ils jouent une heure avant nous. Je pourrai peut-être entendre quelques chansons. Bien sûr, j’aimerais voir Sacred Reich. Je ne les ai pas vus depuis… je ne sais plus combien d’années. Exodus, nous avons joué plusieurs fois ensemble, mais je vais les voir aussi. Peut-être Muse. Nous verrons ce qu’il y a le vendredi, car le samedi, nous devons rentrer chez nous, donc nous ne pouvons voir les groupes que le vendredi. Si nous sommes à l’heure, j’aimerais voir Burning Witches. Elles jouent sur notre scène et c’est un groupe vraiment cool et génial.

Gerre : Nous sommes vraiment impatients de revenir au Hellfest. Nous avons joué au festival Anthems of Steel cette année, il y a quelques mois. C’était génial, le public était formidable, et nous espérons passer une super soirée Thrash Metal ensemble demain !
A few questions to German Thrash Metal legend Tankard’s vocalist Andreas « Gerre » Geremia by Zoom the day before they play Hellfest 2025.
So first of all, how are you?
Andreas « Gerre » Geremia (vocals): Yeah, I’m fine! Preparing to travel tomorrow to the Hellfest and really looking forward to play at that big festival after so many years. That was around 15 years ago, the first time and the last time, 2010. So we are really looking forward to what will happen tomorrow. I hope a lot of Thrash Metal fans will be there.
Of course! So as you said, Tankard will play Hellest tomorrow. How do you feel about the show?
Gerre: Yeah, so we have one hour of time and I think we are really prepared. We are really looking forward. I think we play in a very big tent. So, the set list is finished and there will be some live streaming of Arte or they will stream it one hour later, but Tankard on television, it’s cool! So I hope we’re gonna have a good time the bands after Tankard, Sacred Reich and Exodus, I think there will be some Thrash Metal maniacs in this tent!
Yeah, definitely. So how did you get prepared for the show?
Gerre: We didn’t practice this week because at the moment we play every week and nothing special for preparation tomorrow.
So what does playing Hellfest mean for Tankard and for you personally?
Gerre: Of course Hellfest is the biggest and most important festival in France. And I think it’s such as big as Wacken, and we are very proud to join the festival this year. And hopefully we can, maybe we can reach some new fans. That would be awesome. And just the atmosphere and watching other concerts and have a good time. We are really looking forward.
Your latest album is called Pavlov’s Dogs, and it came out back in 2022. How do you feel now about the album?
Gerre: I’m still satisfied with the album, with the results. I mean we were for the first time in Germany in the top 10 official album charts on place 8. That was a very big success, 3 years ago. And we still play two songs from this album live and also tomorrow. So there will be another Tankard record, but we don’t know exactly when and there is not one song ready yet, but there will be another studio album of Tankard, of course. It takes more time than 20 years ago when we were a little bit younger, everything goes a little bit faster. But there will be one. But we don’t know exactly next year, in 2 years, I don’t know.
At least there’s another one coming, I’m happy with this! So Tankard has always been a major act in German Thrash Metal. What can you say about the evolution of the Thrash Metal scene for all those years?
Gerre: I grew up with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in the end of the 70s, beginning of the 80s, and then we heard… I don’t know, the first Exodus album, the first Metallica, the first Slayer album, the first Exciter album, and we were really infected. I think at that time, a lot of German bands started with that kind of music and we still have a good Thrash Metal scene here, of course. There will always be waves, I would say, in the middle of the 90s until the end of the 90s, Thrash Metal was not that popular. Heavy Metal in general was not popular, but it never vanished 100%. It was never a wave for 100%. So I think it will survive and there will always be somehow like waves. It will be more popular and less popular, but I think it will always be a very important part of the whole Metal scene.
Tankard is a band that I have listened to for like maybe 20 years now, and you always talk about beer. So my new question will be obvious: why do you like beer and what is your favorite beer?
Gerre: First of all, my favorite beer is always the beer we get backstage because it’s for free. So, if you listen to Tankard for 20 years, as you have mentioned we always try to do a good combination of serious lyrics and funny lyrics. I mean, of course we did everything for this kind of image with albums like Chemical Invasion, The Morning After. And then we really wanted to get rid of this kind of image in the middle of the 90s, but of course, we totally failed nowadays. We have a lot of parody and sense of humor, talking about our own image, but there was always since the 2nd album and there will always be the serious side of Tankard with serious lyrics. But in general, Tankard is a band who has a lot of fun to play that kind of music on stage and this kind of funny image really more fits to us, than this kind of evil image, you know, war, Satan, death… I don’t know. So we sometimes sing songs about beer, but we also have a lot of serious stuff and, that’s the combination we can live with.
The band plays around 20 to 30 shows each year. Is it a choice not to play on long tours?
Gerre: We all have regular jobs so it’s a little bit difficult to spend all our holiday and free time into the band’s activities. On one hand, we are totally independent. We can do what we want, we don’t have to live from the music. On the other hand, we are not able to play all the offers we have, so… It could be maybe some more shows. I would love to play 5 more shows, especially in countries we have never been to. But we still all have our regular jobs, so it’s not possible to go for 6 months or something like that on tour.
Sure, I understand…
Gerre: Oh, you wear a Tankard shirt, I see! Die with a Beer in your Hand!
Of course, it’s one I bought at Motocultor 2015!
So next question, as you mentioned, you grew up with American Thrash Metal bands, and I feel there’s a difference between uh American Thrash and German Thrash. Do you also feel a kind of difference in the sound?
Gerre: I think each band, even if they are from the United States or from Europe somehow, I don’t speak about Germany, they have their own sound. I really wouldn’t say that we have a typical German Thrash sound, so the bands sound different, everybody has their own style. I can see that maybe you have a different opinion. I think every band stands for its own and there is not a typical Bay Area sound, I mean. The Bay Area was the place where all the bands were played and were born, but I think every band has its own sound. So nothing, nothing 100% typical. European, German, or Bay Area, I wouldn’t say. Thrash is worldwide and every band has its own sound.
So let’s focus on Hellfest again, you said you defined the setlist. How did you build it, and how do you plan to communicate with the audience?
Gerre: The set list, yeah… We will see. I don’t have a plan now, about what I have to talk to the audience. This is really spontaneous when Tankard is live. We have 18 full length albums out. It’s always of course very difficult to build a setlist. So, of course, we will play two songs from the latest album, of course we will play some highlights from the beginning of our career… So we always try to do a good mixture. And what I’m gonna talk to the audience, we will see. I don’t know this evening. We will see at the moment. We will see.
As you said, bands playing next after Tankard are Sacred Reich and Exodus, do you plan to see any bands at Hellfest?
Gerre: I really want to see The Cult, but they play one hour before we play. Maybe I can catch some songs. Of course, I would like to see Sacred Reich. I haven’t seen them since… I don’t know how many years. Exodus, we played a couple of times together, but I’m gonna watch them too. Maybe Muse. We will see what’s on the Friday because on Saturday, we have to go back home, so we only have the possibility to see bands on Friday. Maybe if we are right on time, I would like to see Burning Witches. They play on our stage and they are quite a lot of cool and a great band.

Gerre: We are really looking forward to come back to Hellfest. We played Anthems of Steel festival this year, a couple of months ago. It was brilliant, awesome audience, and we hope to have a great Thrash Metal party together tomorrow!
