Quelques questions à Emilio Souto, guitariste de Skiltron, après leur concert au Hellfest Open Air Festival.
Bonjour et merci de nous accorder un peu de ton temps. Tout d’abord, comment vous sentez-vous ?
Emilio Souto (guitare) : Bonjour ! Je vais très bien, j’espère que c’est aussi le cas pour tous ceux qui lisent ceci.
Comment décrirais-tu le groupe Skiltron à quelqu’un qui ne vous connaît pas sans utiliser les mots “Folk Metal” ?
Emilio : Pour être honnête, je ne considère pas vraiment que le groupe fasse partie de cette catégorie. Nous sommes un groupe de Heavy/Power Metal traditionnel, mais bien sûr, nous utilisons des instruments traditionnels pour mener notre musique, et c’est la raison pour laquelle nous pouvons être classés dans ce sous-genre. Mais en fin de compte, ce ne sont que des étiquettes. Ce qui compte vraiment, c’est de savoir si la musique est bonne ou non, au-delà de tout genre ou catégorie.
Le groupe a joué au Hellfest cette année sur la scène Temple, comment s’est passé le concert pour vous ?
Emilio : C’était incroyable et il faisait vraiment chaud ! Probablement le concert le plus chaud que nous ayons jamais donné. Ma guitare était toute moite et les frettes étaient glissantes, donc c’était un peu difficile, mais la réaction du public a rendu ce moment vraiment génial.
Que signifie pour toi et pour le groupe le fait de jouer au Hellfest ?
Emilio : C’était sans aucun doute l’un de nos concerts les plus importants jusqu’à présent. Nous espérions y jouer depuis des années, et nous avons enfin réussi. Nous espérons y retourner.
Comment vous êtes-vous préparés pour ce concert ?
Emilio : Comme d’habitude. Chacun répète chez lui, puis nous montons sur scène. Comme nous vivons tous dans des endroits différents, voire dans des pays différents, il est très difficile de répéter ensemble. Depuis quelques années, nous avons mis au point une méthode qui consiste à répéter individuellement chez nous, puis à compter sur l’énergie du live pour tout rassembler sur scène.
Votre dernier album, Bruadarach, est sorti il y a près de deux ans. Qu’en penses-tu ? Quelles ont été les réactions ?
Emilio : Personnellement, je pense que c’est le meilleur album de Skiltron à ce jour et le meilleur que j’aurais pu faire à ce moment-là. Il a fallu beaucoup de temps pour le finaliser en raison de différents facteurs, mais je suis très satisfait du résultat, des critiques et de la réaction des fans.
Comment s’est déroulé le processus de création de cet album ? Avec le recul, changerais-tu quelque chose à ce processus ?
Emilio : Je suis responsable de la composition. En gros, je donne le matériel aux gars à l’état de démo, et ils peuvent suggérer des arrangements, mais à ce stade, tout est pratiquement terminé. Bien sûr, lors de l’enregistrement, chacun ajoute sa touche personnelle.
Comment construisez-vous la présence scénique de Skiltron ? Est-ce libre et tout le monde se déchaîne, ou y a-t-il des moments forts ?
Emilio : Nous n’avons pas vraiment de préparation, de rituels ou quoi que ce soit de ce genre. Nous aimons simplement être spontanés et profiter de l’adrénaline.
Avez-vous déjà commencé à travailler sur de nouveaux morceaux ?
Emilio : Il y a quelque chose en cours, mais la prochaine étape d’enregistrement est en quelque sorte un secret au sein du groupe, car nous prévoyons de faire quelque chose qui pourrait sortir de l’ordinaire.
Avez-vous réussi à prendre le temps de voir d’autres groupes pendant le festival ?
Emilio : Nous n’avons pas eu beaucoup de temps, mais j’ai eu la chance de voir The Cult depuis le balcon pendant le dîner, et c’était vraiment sympa.
Si tu devais choisir un musicien invité pour votre prochain album, qui choisirais-tu et pourquoi ?
Emilio : Glenn Danzig ! Je suis un grand fan, même si je ne pense pas qu’il serait intéressé. 😛
J’ai une dernière question amusante pour vous : à quel plat compareriez-vous votre groupe ?
Emilio : Honnêtement, rien ne me vient à l’esprit, hé hé.
C’était ma dernière question, as-tu un dernier mot pour le public français ?
Emilio : À tous nos chers fans en France, merci pour votre soutien ! Il semble que nous ayons construit une très bonne base de fans là-bas, et nous vous reverrons cette année au Rising Fest et l’année prochaine à Echos et Merveilles.
A few questions to Skiltron’s guitar player Emilio Souto after their show at Hellfest Open Air Festival.
Hello and thank you for your time. First of all, how do you feel?
Emilio Souto (guitar): Hi! I’m doing great, hopefully the same for everyone reading this.
How could you describe the band Skiltron to someone who doesn’t know you without using the words “Folk Metal”?
Emilio: To be honest, I don’t really consider the band to be part of that category. We are a traditional Heavy/Power Metal band, but of course, we use traditional instruments to lead our music, and that’s the reason why we can be placed in that subgenre. But at the end of the day, those are just labels. What really matters is whether the music is good or not, beyond any genre or category.
The band played at Hellfest this year on the Temple stage, how was the show for you?
Emilio: It was amazing and really hot! Probably the hottest show we’ve ever played. My guitar was all sweaty, and the frets were slippery, so it was a bit of a challenge, but the audience’s reaction made it truly great.
What does playing Hellfest mean for you and for the band?
Emilio: It was definitely one of our most important shows so far. We had been hoping to play there for years, and finally we made it. Hopefully, we’ll be back again.
How did you get prepared for this show?
Emilio: The same way we always do. Everyone practices at home, and then we just hit the stage. Since we all live in different places, even different countries. it’s very hard to rehearse together. For some years now, we’ve developed a method where we practice individually at home and then rely on the live energy to bring everything together on stage.
Your latest album Bruadarach came out nearly 2 years ago, how do you feel about it? How was the feedback?
Emilio: Personally, I think it’s the best Skiltron album so far and the best I could have done at that time. It took a long time to be ready due to different factors, but I’m very pleased with the result, the reviews, and the fans’ response.
How did the creation process happen for this album? In retrospect, would you change something to the process?
Emilio: I’m in charge of the songwriting. Basically, I give the material to the guys in a demo stage, and they might suggest some arrangements, but by that point, everything is pretty much done. Of course, when we’re recording, everyone adds their own personal touch.
How do you build the Skiltron stage presence? Is it free and everyone just goes wild, or are there some climax?
Emilio: We don’t really have any preparation, rituals, or anything like that. We just like to be spontaneous and enjoy the adrenaline.
Did you already begin to work on new material?
Emilio: There’s something in progress, but the next recording stage is kind of a secret within the band, because we’re planning to do something that might not be very usual.
Did you manage to take some time to see some bands during the festival?
Emilio: We didn’t have much time, but I did get the chance to watch The Cult from the balcony while having dinner, and it was really nice.
If you had to pick one guest musician for your next album, who would you choose and why?
Emilio: Glenn Danzig! I’m a big fan, though I don’t think he would be interested. 😛
I have one last funny question for you, which dish would you compare your band to?
Emilio: Nothing comes to mind, to be honest, hehe.
