Quelques questions à AlienSPagan, chanteur/guitariste du groupe The Cemetary Girlz, après leur performance au Hellfest Open Air 2025 par Raven.
Depuis cet entretien, Divarre (batterie) et Sioux (Basse) ont quitté le groupe pour raisons personnelles.
Bonjour et tout d’abord merci de m’accorder de ton temps ! Comment te sens-tu ?
AlienSPagan : Là, je suis crevé parce qu’il fait super chaud.
Raven : Je m’en étais pas aperçue tiens !
AlienSPagan : Comme tout le monde je pense.
Raven : Oui, surtout quand tu fais des interviews en dessous ici et qu’il fait plus de 40 degrés sous la tente.
Première vraie question : Comment pourrais-tu décrire le groupe sans jamais évoquer les termes “Gothique/Deathrock” ?
AlienSPagan : J’aime bien dire la musique du cimetière. Ça correspond bien à l’univers, je pense.
Vous avez joué ce matin sur la Temple, comment s’est passé le concert de ton point de vue ?
AlienSPagan : C’était cool, c’était hyper rapide, on a joué 30 minutes et on a dû condenser les morceaux, speeder quelques titres aussi… c’était speed mais c’était énorme de jouer au Hellfest.
Raven: J’imagine bien, j’y étais, et les gens qui étaient présents semblent avoir bien aimé.
Dans quel état d’esprit es-tu monté sur scène ? Est-ce que tu avais des appréhensions, du stress, de l’excitation ?
AlienSPagan : Plus de l’excitation. Du stress, non ça va. Un petit peu avant de monter mais j’étais plutôt content, très excité de jouer au Hellfest.
Qu’est-ce que ça signifie de jouer au Hellfest pour ton groupe, et surtout pour toi ?
AlienSPagan : Je trouve que c’est une consécration pour le groupe, on a joué partout dans le monde. Là on a une tournée aux États-Unis et au Canada en septembre, donc on a un très gros public aux US et à l’étranger, et en France pas tellement. Donc le fait de nous inviter au Hellfest, je pense que c’est… du moins pour moi, c’est une consécration pour le groupe, c’est ouais vraiment une reconnaissance certaine.
Comment vous êtes-vous préparés pour ce show ?
AlienSPagan : Alors sincèrement non, parce qu’on habite tous dans des villes très éloignées. Le batteur est en Écosse, moi je suis entre Paris et Reims, mon bassiste est à Toulouse. On s’est vus la veille pour répéter, on ne s’était pas vu depuis la dernière date à Madrid. C’est assez chaud quand même de préparer des concerts comme ça, mais on a l’habitude, on fait ça depuis des années.
Le dernier album du groupe, L’Envol du Corbeau, date de 2023, avec le recul, qu’est-ce que tu penses de cet album ? Comment ont été les retours ?
AlienSPagan : On est tous les trois super contents de cet album, je pense qu’il représente vraiment le son qu’on voulait apporter avec le line-up actuel. Ça représente bien le groupe et on a eu un retour assez inattendu parce qu’on a pris un virage un petit peu plus sombre avec des sonorités un peu Metal, Black, Shoegaze etc… Et on a conquis un autre public qu’on n’aurait pas pensé attirer, et on a eu que des bons retours sur cet album.
Raven : Tant mieux !
AlienSPagan : Parfait le retour inattendu, c’est encore mieux.
Raven : Il y a eu cet album et est-ce que tu as déjà commencé à travailler sur la suite ?
AlienSPagan : J’ai composé un album mais qui ne me plaît pas. Ca arrive, parce qu’en fait j’étais reparti vers justement un son un petit peu plus Deathrock comme les premiers albums, mais en fait je me suis rendu compte que ce n’était pas ce qui nous plaisait et ce qui plaisait à notre public maintenant. Donc on va continuer sur la lancée de L’Envol, mais un peu plus pêchu et avec des morceaux un peu plus courts pour faire plus de morceaux justement. Donc on va attaquer ça prochainement.
Raven : D’accord, donc un changement un peu dans les compositions, non seulement pour plaire au public élargi, mais aussi puisque vous semblez avoir évolué au final, c’est pas forcément plus mal.
Et bah par rapport justement au processus de création d’un album, est-ce que tu peux en parler un peu plus ?
AlienSPagan : En fait, je m’inspire beaucoup de photos que je prends de cimetière, de souvenirs… J’ai énormément de mélancolie par rapport aux images et là ce que j’ai décidé de faire, c’est de faire un single, une image, une vidéo. Par contre, ça prend du temps. Donc c’est pour ça à chaque fois qu’on voyage avec ma femme et mes enfants, on prend en photo les tombes, chaque fois qu’on va quelque part, je dis “il faut qu’on aille ici à ce cimetière, il y a quelque chose qu’il faut que que je photographie”. Donc une tombe avec un crâne, c’était à Cologne, il y avait une faucheuse de deux mètres qui est magnifique, j’ai pris en photo et je veux m’inspirer de chaque photo.
Raven: D’accord, mais est-ce qu’il y aura par exemple pour le prochain album, un concept précis ou ça sera juste une succession de titres qui seront liés ensemble?
AlienSPagan : Il a L’Envol du Corbeau, la suite, c’est le corbeau qui atterrit. (Ce n’est pas le nom du prochain album).
Raven : Je me doute bien. Mais c’est plutôt l’idée. Il se pose quelque part.
Très intéressant, et par rapport à tout ça, comment se passe la collaboration avec le label Manic Depression?
AlienSPagan : Pour être honnête, on n’a pas beaucoup de contact, en sortie d’album, on décide de faire tant de vinyle, tant de CD… C’est plus de la distribution que vraiment un label en fait… C’est mon avis et ressenti par mes potes du groupe, on est indépendant à 100%, c’est-à-dire qu’on n’a pas de tourneur, on n’a pas de presse, on gère tout de notre côté. On n’a pas beaucoup beaucoup de soutien de notre label, par rapport à d’autres groupes qui sont chez Manic. Après, ce sont des potes, on a sorti notre premier album avec eux, on a démarré avec eux, mais je t’avoue qu’on ne se sent pas vraiment soutenus par notre label par rapport à l’impact qu’on a sur les réseaux sociaux par exemple. C’est dommage. Il faudra peut-être en reparler avec eux, il y a toujours moyen de discuter.
En tant que groupe de Deathrock/Goth, quelles sont les inspirations principales du groupe ? Tu me disais par rapport à L’Envol du Corbeau que c’était des photos, tu parlais de vidéos aussi, mais est-ce que c’est axé sur ce qui est cimetière uniquement ou d’autres choses, ou des thèmes récurrents ?
AlienSPagan : Des paysages la nuit, des villages, des forêts… c’est vraiment nature et mort en fait.
Raven : Une nature morte. Pardon, j’allais dire que j’irai en enfer pour celle-là, mais j’y suis déjà.Principalement la photographie. On peut dire en tout cas oui, quelque chose, une image qui te plaît et vraiment qui te donne une idée ouais.
AlienSPagan : Parce que L’Envol du Corbeau, la plupart des paroles, je parle beaucoup de la destruction de la nature par l’homme. Dans Echoes of my Tears, je parle des forêts qui brûlent, des hommes qui détruisent tout. L’Envol du Corbeau, c’est le regard du corbeau au-dessus des villages, il voit tout détruit. Donc là, ce sera plus le corbeau qui a atterri et qui a envie de hurler.
Cela fait un moment que tu évolues au sein du paysage Gothique, est-ce que tu as vu une évolution ? Ou des changements notables, des groupes émergeants dont tu souhaiterais nous parler ?
AlienSPagan : La scène Goth française, Il y a The Last Oath, c’est des potes, on attendait avec eux en Pologne et c’est un coup de coeur parce qu’ils ont une pêche, une énergie Deathrock en fait, ils me font penser à notre groupe quand on a démarré. Avec un côté un peu plus Type O Negative. Après, la scène Goth actuelle ne me plaît pas énormément parce que j’ai l’impression qu’il y a beaucoup plus de de groupes qui font de la Pop et qui se revendiquent Goth pour avoir l’image dark parce que c’est devenu une mode. Et l’étiquette Post-Punk aussi me casse un peu les couilles, mais c’est mon avis personnel, j’adore le Post-Punk.
Raven : Tu as le droit d’avoir ton avis personnel !
AlienSPagan : J’adore tout ce courant musical, tous les nouveaux groupes qui émergent aux USA, en Angleterre, etc… Mais je n’ai pas vraiment de coup de cœur français à part The Last Oath et même à l’étranger, j’adore Forever Grey. C’est un coup de cœur avec This Cold Night. J’aime bien Twin Tribes, mais je trouve que ça tourne en rond, c’est toujours pareil. Et Shrouds, ils sont de Los Angeles aussi que j’aime beaucoup à propos de groupe justement.
Je te laisserai bien imaginer une date avec trois groupes de rêve pour l’ouverture du prochain album !
AlienSPagan : Je dirais The Last Oath, Forever Grey, Shrouds et Kentucky Vampires. Parce que Zach Campbell, c’est un ami de longue date, il a joué avec nous au Wave Gothic Treffen sur deux morceaux, parce qu’il adore Cemetary et j’adore ses groupes; donc ce serait cool.
Est-ce que tu comptes voir des groupes pendant le week-end ? Quels sont tes coups de cœur de l’affiche ?
AlienSPagan : On est arrivé hier, très tard, je ne sais pas si on a vu quelque chose.
Raven : J’ai vu la fatigue.
AlienSPagan : C’est surtout parce qu’on avait pas de clim dans la voiture, donc c’était un peu l’enfer. Deafheaven sur la Temple qui était vraiment cool… Un coup de cœur US c’est Unto Others, énergie, voix, tout, ça me fait penser à Misfits, Sister of Mercy, et c’est un côté Goth Metal que j’adore.
Raven : A propos de groupes, est-ce qu’il y en a aujourd’hui que tu aimerais voir particulièrement, ou que tu as vu ?
AlienSPagan : Je n’aimerais pas que ça fasse polémique, mais Falling In Reverse, juste parce que j’adore le personnage, il fait délirer. C’est sympa, c’est à voir, je pense. C’est pas forcément dans ma liste, mais Linkin Park parce que ben j’écoutais quand j’étais au collège et ce serait cool de les voir. On m’a dit qu’ils étaient maintenus.
Dernière question, celle qui va te faire sourire : à quel plat pourrais-tu comparer la musique de The Cemetary Girlz?
AlienSPagan : Alors là c’est compliqué parce que mon batteur est végan, et si je dis boeuf bourguignon, ça ne va pas lui plaire !
Raven : Tu peux en donner deux à la rigueur ! Ça ne me dérange pas !
AlienSPagan : Je te dirais du seitan. Voilà pour le côté végan…
Raven : Si ça peut te rassurer, je l’ai posé trois fois à Shaârghot avant d’avoir une réponse, donc t’inquiète c’est cool !

A few questions for AlienSPagan, singer/guitarist of the band The Cemetary Girlz, after their performance at Hellfest Open Air 2025 by Raven.

Hello, and first of all, thank you for taking the time to talk to me! How do you feel?
AlienSPagan: Right now, I’m exhausted because it’s so hot.
Raven: I hadn’t noticed!
AlienSPagan: Like everyone else, I think.
Raven: Yes, especially when you’re doing interviews down here and it’s over 40 degrees in the tent.
First real question: How would you describe the band without ever mentioning the terms “Gothic/Deathrock”?
AlienSPagan: I like to call it cemetery music. I think it fits the vibe well.
You played this morning on the Temple stage. How did the concert go from your point of view?
AlienSPagan: It was cool, it was super fast, we played for 30 minutes and we had to condense the songs, speed up a few tracks too… it was fast but it was huge to play at Hellfest.
Raven: I can imagine, I was there, and the people who were there seemed to really enjoy it.
What was your state of mind when you went on stage? Were you apprehensive, stressed, excited?
AlienSPagan: More excited than anything else. Stressed? No, I was fine. A little bit before going on stage, but I was mostly happy, really excited to play at Hellfest.
What does playing at Hellfest mean for your band, and especially for you?
AlienSPagan: I think it’s a crowning achievement for the band. We’ve played all over the world. We have a tour in the US and Canada in September, so we have a very large audience in the US and abroad, but not so much in France. So the fact that they invited us to Hellfest, I think it’s… at least for me, it’s a crowning achievement for the band, it’s really a definite recognition.
How did you prepare for this show?
AlienSPagan: Honestly, we didn’t, because we all live in cities that are very far apart. The drummer is in Scotland, I’m between Paris and Reims, and my bassist is in Toulouse. We met up the day before to rehearse, we hadn’t seen each other since the last show in Madrid. It’s pretty tough to prepare for concerts like that, but we’re used to it, we’ve been doing it for years.
The band’s latest album, L’Envol du Corbeau, was released in 2023. Looking back, what do you think of this album? How was the feedback?
AlienSPagan: All three of us are really happy with this album. I think it really represents the sound we wanted to achieve with the current lineup. It represents the band well, and we got some pretty unexpected feedback because we took a slightly darker turn with some Metal, Black, Shoegaze, and other sounds. We won over a new audience that we didn’t think we would attract, and we’ve had nothing but good feedback on this album.
Raven: That’s great!
AlienSPagan: Perfect, unexpected feedback is even better.
Raven: So there was this album, and have you already started working on the next one?
AlienSPagan: I’ve composed an album, but I don’t like it. It happens, because I actually went back to a slightly more Deathrock sound like the first albums, but I realized that it wasn’t what we liked or what our audience liked now. So we’re going to continue in the vein of L’Envol, but with a little more punch and slightly shorter tracks so we can fit more songs on the album. We’ll be getting started on that soon.
Raven: Okay, so a slight change in the compositions, not only to appeal to a wider audience, but also because you seem to have evolved in the end, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
So, regarding the process of creating an album, can you tell us a little more about it?
AlienSPagan: Actually, I get a lot of inspiration from photos I take of cemeteries, memories… I feel a lot of melancholy when it comes to images, so what I decided to do was to make a single, an image, a video. However, it takes time. So that’s why every time I travel with my wife and children, we take photos of graves. Every time we go somewhere, I say, “We have to go to this cemetery, there’s something I need to photograph.” So, a grave with a skull, it was in Cologne, there was a magnificent two-meter-tall grim reaper, I took a photo and I want to draw inspiration from each photo.
Raven: Okay, but will there be, for example, a specific concept for the next album, or will it just be a series of tracks that are linked together?
AlienSPagan: There’s L’Envol du Corbeau (The Flight of the Raven), and the sequel is the raven landing. (That’s not the name of the next album).
Raven: But that’s the idea. It lands somewhere.
Very interesting, and in relation to all that, how is the collaboration with the Manic Depression label going?
AlienSPagan: To be honest, we don’t have much contact. When an album comes out, we decide how many vinyls and CDs to make… It’s more about distribution than actually being a label… That’s my opinion and how my bandmates feel. We’re 100% independent, meaning we don’t have a tour manager, we don’t have a press agent, we manage everything ourselves. We don’t get a lot of support from our label, compared to other bands on Manic. But they’re friends, we released our first album with them, we started out with them, but I have to admit that we don’t really feel supported by our label compared to the impact we have on social media, for example. It’s a shame. Maybe we need to talk to them about it again, there’s always room for discussion.
As a Deathrock/Goth band, what are the band’s main inspirations? You told me that L’Envol du Corbeau was inspired by photos, and you mentioned videos too, but is it focused solely on cemeteries or other things, or recurring themes?
AlienSPagan: Nighttime landscapes, villages, forests… it’s really nature and death, actually.
Raven: A still life. Sorry, I was going to say I’d go to hell for that one, but I’m already there. Mainly photography. In any case, yes, something, an image that you like and that really gives you an idea, yeah.
AlienSPagan: Because in L’Envol du Corbeau, most of the lyrics, I talk a lot about the destruction of nature by man. In Echoes of my Tears, I talk about forests burning, men destroying everything. L’Envol du Corbeau is the raven’s view above the villages, he sees everything destroyed. So here, it will be more the raven that has landed and wants to scream.
You’ve been part of the Goth scene for a while now. Have you seen any changes? Any notable developments or emerging bands you’d like to tell us about?
AlienSPagan: On the French Goth scene, there’s The Last Oath. They’re friends of ours, we were waiting with them in Poland, and we really like them because they have a lot of energy, a Deathrock energy actually. They remind me of our band when we started out. With a slightly more Type O Negative vibe. Other than that, I don’t really like the current Goth scene because I feel like there are a lot more bands doing Pop and claiming to be Goth to have a dark image because it’s become fashionable. And the Post-Punk label also pisses me off a bit, but that’s just my personal opinion, I love Post-Punk.
Raven: You’re entitled to your personal opinion!
AlienSPagan: I love this whole musical movement, all the new bands emerging in the US, England, etc. But I don’t really have any French favorites apart from The Last Oath, and even abroad, I love Forever Grey. I’m really into This Cold Night. I like Twin Tribes, but I find that they go round in circles, it’s always the same. And Shrouds, they’re from Los Angeles too, and I really like them as a band.
I’ll let you imagine a date with three dream bands for the opening of the next album!
AlienSPagan: I would say The Last Oath, Forever Grey, Shrouds, and Kentucky Vampires. Because Zach Campbell is a long-time friend, he played with us at Wave Gothic Treffen on two songs, because he loves Cemetary and I love his bands; so that would be cool.
Are you planning on seeing any bands over the weekend? Who are your favorites on the lineup?
AlienSPagan: We arrived yesterday, very late, so I don’t know if we saw anything.
Raven: I saw the exhaustion.
AlienSPagan: It’s mainly because we didn’t have air conditioning in the car, so it was a bit hellish. Deafheaven on the Temple stage was really cool… One of my favorites from the US is Unto Others—the energy, the vocals, everything. It reminds me of Misfits, Sister of Mercy, and that Goth Metal side that I love.
Raven: Speaking of bands, are there any today that you’d particularly like to see, or that you’ve seen?
AlienSPagan: I don’t want to cause any controversy, but Falling In Reverse, just because I love the guy, he’s crazy. It’s fun, worth seeing, I think. It’s not necessarily on my list, but Linkin Park because I used to listen to them when I was in middle school and it would be cool to see them. I’ve been told they’re still going.
Last question, one that will make you smile: what dish would you compare The Cemetary Girlz‘s music to?
AlienSPagan: Well, that’s complicated because my drummer is vegan, and if I say beef bourguignon, he’s not going to like it!
Raven: You can give two if you want! I don’t mind!
AlienSPagan: I’d say seitan. That covers the vegan aspect…
Raven: If it makes you feel any better, I asked Shaârghot three times before getting an answer, so don’t worry, it’s cool!
