Review 3197 : Crème Flesh – For Your Ass Only – English

I don’t know if Crème Flesh is the best or worst pun I’ve ever come across.

In any case, the Canadian band—comprising Matt Hilden (vocals), Sophokles Theodoru (guitar), Rory Kennedy (bass), and Alen L. (drums)—continues its journey with Comatose Music to bring us its second album, For Your Ass Only.

With such a clever name, we could only expect high-quality Brutal/Slam Death that honors the genre’s tradition, as is evident from the very first notes of Field of Creams, which opens with a mysterious sample before launching into simple yet effective riffs, packed with palm-mutes and piercing harmonics. Blast beats and inhuman screams are, of course, present, as are those slow, thick mosh parts—unlike No Cunt for Old Men, which offers a much livelier approach while remaining consistently violent. We move on to a new sample introducing Lake Flaccid, followed by the usual avalanche of brutality, during which we get to enjoy both the characteristic snare drum and a touch of technicality on the bass, then the band welcomes Jack Christensen (Septic Congestion, ex-Kraanium, ex-Guttural Slug) to reinforce the already powerful vocals on For Your Ass Only, the title track. The numbing palm-mutes return for The Gapes of Wrath” the next track, which doesn’t skimp on catchy patterns or piercing harmonic screams to knock us down; then the musicians grant us a brief respite at the start of MILF of Magnesia only to ultimately catch us off guard and trample us with their ultra-aggressive, ever-shifting sound. Sleepless on Cialis won’t pull any punches when it comes to hammering us with its massive, choppy riffs at breakneck speed, and the same goes for Jagged Little Penis, which follows suit with its merciless rhythm section, barely slowing down for a ponderous chorus. A detour through Scat’s Cradle brings a few groovy touches, albeit irregular and explosive, reinforcing the heaviness toward the end, then we emerge into Whores of Perception, the final track that remains within this straitjacket of pure, unadulterated violence with repeated assaults that are sure to make us bang our heads during the heaviest passages.

For Your Ass Only runs just over half an hour, but its ten tracks assault us without restraint! Crème Flesh may have a questionable name, but the riffs are there, and that’s clearly all that matters!
