Nugreth is ready to do battle once again.
After a few years under the name The Idiot Flesh, the New England-based band led by Tommy Trisdale (Tomb of Anubis), Bill Curtis (Deranged Youth), and Taylor Belanger (Ethereal Rot) has changed its name and is releasing its new EP, Nugreth.
There will be no holding back right from the first track, War is Now Declared, as even the noise-driven intro is unsettling – and to say that the rhythm section that follows takes the same approach is an understatement, incorporating wild vocal parts into a mix of Death, Grind and Deathcore. The musicians redouble their efforts to create an ultra-dissonant sound while remaining aggressive, before moving on to Cyberintegrated Psychosis Nodule, which displays even more signs of chaotic technicality, reinforcing that sense of oppression that almost sounds like the end of the world. The opening moments of V-3 Sewer Creeper will throw more than a few listeners off, but the arrival of the bouncy rhythm section doesn’t put our minds at ease either; we’ll have to wait until the band unleashes its fury once more to fully appreciate their organized violence, which crushes us until we reach the equally unsettling Lore of the Flesh, which explodes without warning. The various waves of aggression are all marked by that touch of the unexpected, and it’s almost a relief to reach Biological Synthesis of the Contrivance and its glitchy cybernetic intro, which heralds the final onslaught, itself marked by ultra-complex and ever-shifting patterns, a sign that, despite what newcomers might think, the band remains highly cohesive right up to the end.
There are no words to describe Nugreth’s organized cacophony, as each track is a veritable call to destroy structures. Yet Nugreth will find its audience, and that audience will be more than happy to have these waves of as violent as dissonant riffs pounding their eardrums!
