Bonjour et tout d’abord, merci de m’accorder de ton temps ! Pourrais-tu vous présenter, le groupe Schattenmann et toi, sans utiliser les étiquettes Metal habituelles telles que « Metal Industriel »
Frank Herzig (chant) : Bonjour, je m’appelle Frank, je suis le chanteur de Schattenmann, et je suis ravi de donner cette interview aujourd’hui ! Schattenmann est composé de quatre jeunes musiciens qui apprécient une approche directe, sans filtre, honnête et brute des paroles et de la musique.
Comment associez-vous le nom Schattenmann à l’identité musicale du groupe ?
Frank : Dans notre musique, nous abordons souvent des thèmes cachés, qui ne sont pas directement évidents, comme la partie cachée en soi et les sentiments invisibles dans l’ombre. Nous avons également des paroles sociales très critiques et nous chantons sur la lumière et l’obscurité de notre société.
Día De Muertos, votre nouvel album, sortira bientôt. Avez-vous déjà des retours ?
Frank : J’ai hâte, et je suis et curieux de voir comment notre album va être reçu. Nous y avons consacré beaucoup de travail, alors naturellement, j’espère que l’album trouvera un écho auprès de nos auditeurs et qu’ils apprécieront notre nouveau son. Jusqu’à présent, les réactions ont été excellentes et les singles que nous avons sortis ont été bien accueillis.
Comment résumerais-tu l’identité de Día De Muertos en trois mots ?
Frank : Sans compromis, honnête, émotionnel.
Comment s’est déroulé le processus de composition de Día De Muertos ? Y a-t-il eu des différences avec les albums précédents ?
Frank : Nous n’avons jamais été aussi durs et honnêtes avec nous-mêmes que pendant le processus de composition de cet album. Nous nous sommes fixé des objectifs élevés que nous voulions atteindre. Par exemple, sur 100 idées, nous n’en avons retenu que 10 pour l’album. Le chemin a été long entre le premier riff et l’album fini, à tous points de vue. Nous n’avons pas non plus abandonné les photos, les illustrations, les vidéos et les sons. Pour la première fois dans l’histoire du groupe, nous avons le sentiment que nous n’aurions pas pu faire mieux.
Quelles étaient les lignes directrices pour l’artwork, et comment s’accordent-elles avec la musique que vous avez créée ?
Frank : Il n’y a pas eu de directives particulières, si ce n’est nos attentes. Tout s’est simplement mis en place. Nous n’avions pas de plan pour que l’album soit ou ne soit pas. Nous avons simplement créé et essayé de répondre à nos attentes.
Où trouvez-vous l’inspiration pour créer votre musique et vos paroles ?
Frank : La vie elle-même est notre source d’inspiration. Les histoires que la vie écrit et nos propres expériences.
Le groupe a dévoilé quelques singles pour présenter l’album, comment les choisissez-vous ?
Frank : Nous décidons en tant que groupe, ensemble. Parfois, nous avons aussi une bonne idée de vidéo que nous voulons mettre en œuvre pour une chanson spécifique.
L’un d’entre eux est Dickpic, avec un nom si… suggestif. Comment avez-vous créé cette chanson ? Qu’en est-il de la collaboration avec Anna Lux ?
Frank : Cette chanson a été l’une des premières créées pour l’album. Nous étions captivés par le sujet et nous voulions faire une déclaration. Nous trouvons l’envoi de photos de bites dégoûtant et totalement inacceptable. La collaboration avec Anna a été excellente ; elle a chanté la chanson avec brio et a ajouté ce petit quelque chose de spécial à sa voix.
Peut-être as-tu une chanson préférée sur cet album ? Ou peut-être la plus difficile à réaliser pour l’album ?
Frank : Actuellement, mes chansons préférées sont Día de Muertos et Ewigkeit.
Depuis quelques temps, le groupe est signé chez AFM Records, que peux-tu nous dire à propos de cette collaboration ?
Frank : C’est un honneur d’être avec un label aussi prestigieux et nous sommes reconnaissants du soutien d’AFM ! Nous nous sentons à l’aise et entre de bonnes mains avec AFM.
Penses-tuque vous continuez à vous améliorer en tant que musiciens et auteurs-compositeurs ?
Frank : Absolument oui ! Avec chaque chanson, on apprend et on se développe. C’est aussi ce qu’il y a de plus beau, et c’est incroyablement amusant. Ce serait terrible si je ne pouvais pas continuer à me développer et à m’améliorer en tant que musicien et auteur-compositeur.
Comment pensez-vous que le jeu de scène et la tenue de scène améliorent la performance du groupe ?
Frank : Je pense que tout fait partie d’un bon concert. Le son, la lumière, la tenue et le jeu de scène. C’est l’expérience globale qui captive le spectateur. Nous voulons immerger les gens, les plonger dans l’univers de Schattenmann, et pour cela, nous utilisons tout ce que nous avons.
Si je me fie à Internet (et à setlist.fm), le groupe n’a joué qu’en Allemagne, en Suisse et en Autriche pour l’instant. Aimeriez-vous jouer à l’étranger ? Pensez-vous qu’il soit difficile pour un groupe allemand, chantant en allemand et jouant du Neue Deutsche Härte, de jouer à l’étranger ?
Frank : Oui, pour l’instant, nous ne jouons que dans les pays germanophones. Mais nous aimerions voyager dans d’autres pays et jouer partout, mais cela prendra du temps et se fera par petites étapes. Nous ne nous considérons pas comme un groupe de Neue Deutsche Härte, mais comme un groupe de Metal. Peu importe le type de musique que vous faites ou la langue dans laquelle vous chantez, il est plus difficile de s’implanter à l’étranger.
Quel est le meilleur souvenir que vous gardez des concerts ?
Frank : Il y en a plusieurs, mais je suis encore bouleversé par le concert au Zenith de Munich. Nous étions les invités spéciaux d’Eisbrecher, et j’ai dû lutter contre les larmes lorsque nous avons fait notre révérence. C’est l’un des moments les plus émouvants que j’aie jamais vécu sur scène.
Y a-t-il des musiciens ou des artistes avec lesquels vous aimeriez collaborer ? Que ce soit pour une chanson, ou peut-être plus.
Frank : Oui, absolument, et il y en a tellement que je n’arrive jamais à me décider quand on me le demande 🙂
Peut-être connais-tu la scène Metal/Industrial française ? Quels groupes aimes-tu ?
Frank : Jusqu’à présent, nous n’avons malheureusement pas eu de contact avec cette scène, mais nous serions très heureux d’en avoir en France !
Si vous deviez organiser un concert pour la sortie de Día De Muertos, avec quels groupes aimeriez-vous jouer ? Je te laisse créer une affiche avec Schattenmann en tête d’affiche et trois autres groupes !
Frank : C’est à la fois une bonne question et une question de moyens, parce que trois groupes ne suffisent pas pour la programmation. Mais si je devais décider spontanément maintenant, ce serait : Schattenmann, Eisbrecher, I Prevail, Lord of the Lost.
Dernière question amusante : à quel plat comparerais-tu la musique de Schattenmann ?
Frank : Avec la pizza, il n’y a rien qu’on ne puisse pas combiner sur une pizza, et qui soit aussi varié que la pizza.

Few questions to Frank Herzig, vocalist for the band Schattenmann.
Hello and first of all, thank you very much for your time! Could you please introduce yourself and the band Schattenmann without using the usual Metal labels such as “Industrial Metal”?
Frank Herzig (vocals): Hello, my name is Frank, I am the singer of Schattenmann, and I’m excited to be giving this interview today! Schattenmann consists of four young musicians who appreciate a direct, unfiltered, honest, and hard approach to lyrics and music.
How do you link the name Schattenmann to the band’s music identity?
Frank: With our music, we often address hidden themes, not directly obvious, such as the concealed part within oneself, and the feelings unseen in the shadows. We also have highly critical social lyrics and sing about the light and darkness of our society.
Día De Muertos, your new album, will be out soon, how do you feel about it? Do you already have some feedback?
Frank: I’m really excited and curious to see how our album is going to be received. We put so much work into it, so naturally, I hope the album resonates with our listeners and they enjoy our new sound. So far, the feedback has been great, and the singles we have released have been well-received.
How would you sum Día De Muertos’ identity up in only three words?
Frank: Uncompromising, honest, emotional.
How did the composition process happen for Día De Muertos? Were there some differences with the previous releases?
Frank: We have never been as hard and honest with ourselves as we were during the composition process for this album. We set high standards for ourselves that we wanted to meet. An example of this is that out of 100 ideas, we only picked 10 for the album. It was a long journey from the first riff to the finished album in all aspects. We also didn’t give up on the photos, artwork, videos, and sounds. For the first time in the band’s history, we feel that we couldn’t have done any better.
What were the guidelines for the artwork, and how do they fit with the music you created?
Frank: There were no specific guidelines except for our expectations. Everything simply fell into place. We didn’t have a plan for how the album should or shouldn’t be. We just created and tried to live up to our expectations.
Where do you find inspiration to create your music and lyrics?
Frank: Life itself is our inspiration. Stories that life writes and our own experiences.
The band unveiled a few singles to introduce the album, how do you choose them?
Frank: We decide as a band, together. Sometimes we also have a good video idea that we want to implement for a specific song.
One of them is Dickpic, with such a… suggestive name. How did you create this song? What about the collaboration with Anna Lux?
Frank: The song was one of the first ones created for the album. We were captivated by the topic and wanted to make a statement. We find the act of sending dick pics disgusting and completely unacceptable. The collaboration with Anna was great; she sang the song brilliantly and added that special something to her voice.
Maybe you have a favorite song on this album? Or maybe the hardest one to achieve for the album?
Frank: Currently, my absolute favorites are Día de Muertos and Ewigkeit.
Since a while now, the band is signed to AFM Records, what can you say about the collaboration?
Frank: It’s an honor to be with such a prestigious label and we are grateful for AFM‘s support! We feel comfortable and in good hands with AFM.
Do you think you are still improving yourself as a musician and songwriter?
Frank: Absolutely yes! With every song, you learn and develop further. That’s also the beautiful thing about it, and it’s incredibly fun. It would be terrible if I couldn’t continue to develop and improve as a musician and songwriter.
How do you think the stage play and stage outfit improves the band’s performance?
Frank: I think everything is part of a good concert. The sound, light, outfit, and stage show. The overall experience is what captivates the visitor. We want to immerse the people, soak them into the world of Schattenmann, and for that, we use everything we have.
If I trust the Internet (and setlist.fm), the band only played in Germany, Switzerland and Austria for now. Would you like to play abroad? Do you think it’s hard for a German band, singing in German and playing Neue Deutsche Härte to play abroad?
Frank: Yes, just now we only play in German-speaking countries. But we’d love to travel to other countries and play everywhere, but that will take some time and happen in small steps. We don’t see ourselves as a « Neue Deutsche Härte-band » but as a Metal band. It doesn’t matter what kind of music you make or what language you sing in, it’s harder to get a foothold abroad.
What is the best memory you keep in mind about live shows?
Frank: There are several, but now I’m still overwhelmed by the concert at Zenith in Munich. We were special guests of Eisbrecher there, and I had to fight with tears when we took our curtsy. That was one of the most emotional moments on stage for me ever.
Are there any musicians or artists you would like to collaborate with? Whether it is for one song, or maybe more.
Frank: Yes, absolutely and so many that I can never decide when asked 🙂
Maybe you know the French Metal/Industrial scene? Which bands do you like?
Frank: So far, we had unfortunately no contact with the scene, but we would be very happy about contacts to France!
If you had to organize a concert for Día De Muertos’ release show, with which bands would you love to play with? I let you create a poster with Schattenmann headlining and three other bands!
Frank: That’s a good question and means at the same time because three bands are not enough for the lineup. But if I had to decide spontaneously now, it is: Schattenmann, Eisbrecher, I Prevail, Lord of the Lost.
Funny and last question: which dish would you compare Schattenmann’s music with?
Frank: With pizza, there is nothing that you can not combine on a pizza, and that is as diverse as pizza.
