Review 1803 : Mizmor – Prosaic – English

Let Mizmor mesmerize you with its new production.

Formed in the USA in 2012 by A.L.N. (all instruments/vocals, ex-Sorceress, ex-Urzeit), the band signed to Profound Lore Records in 2023 for the release of Prosaic, their fourth album.

The first track Only An Expanse unveils a sound at the crossroads of abrasive Black and unhealthy Doom, letting slowness add a raw touch to his jerky riffs as he unleashes visceral howls. But the heady tones are easily integrated into these disturbing and throbbing waves that slow down to get heavier before flaring up again, returning to some temporary quietness that leads us to a very melancholic final, followed by No Place To Arrive and its heavy riffs. The thick dark Sludge influences are fully exploited on this track, as are the ghostly cries beneath the veil of dissonant saturation, which eventually give way to calm and clean melodies before being possessed one last time by rage and aggression. Anything But finally takes its place, letting simple but unhealthy riffs shelter a vocal sample before a wild acceleration naturally leads us to the heavy oppressive part which gives voice to cries of despair. A few airy leads join the march into darkness, which is cut short by an ominous guitar, gently leading us into Acceptance, the final composition, which immediately returns to raw darkness and slowness before letting itself be invaded by faster patterns to skilfully guide us to this abyssal final which slowly dies.

Mizmor‘s dark art has its roots in both Black Metal and Doom Metal, making its slow sounds a veritable hymn to death and desolation. You’re sure to be won over by Prosaic‘s damned veil.
