Review 1861 : Cult of Sobek – Petsuchos – English

Cult of Sobek emerges from the swamp.

Founded in 2022 in Scotland, the trio Harry McCardle (bass/vocals), Mihai Romano (guitar) and David « Jij » Roberts (drums) drew inspiration from the great names of Sludge, Doom and Death Metal to create Petsuchos, their debut EP, in 2023, physically released by Trepanation Recordings.

Petsuchos, the eponymous track, is the first to capture us in its eerie sounds, before letting heavy riffs sometimes influenced by Egyptian tones crush us. The heady sound is occasionally reinforced by some massive howls and dissonant harmonics, leaving leads to place tortured sounds that drive us to Lord of the Crocodiles and its gentle introduction infused with bewitching Stoner. The sound eventually accelerates and becomes more dynamic, incorporating terrifying screams and Psychedelic elements, which come to an end to allow Maneater to assert itself, bringing its heavy saturation-adorned roots and hazy yet aggressive vocal parts, closing the album with a contrast between violence and airy sounds. You’d think the song was over, but it’s even crazier and livelier than before.

Cult of Sobek‘s debut may be short, but it’s no less powerful! Petsuchos allows them to unveil their sound, turning its twenty minutes of saturation and heady dissonance into a block of darkness.
