It’s time to lift the veil for Voidfallen.
After their debut album in 2021, Lauri Myllylä (bass, Ephemerald), Mika Lumijärvi (drums), Henri Vuorenmaa (guitar) and Tommi Kangaskortet (guitar, formerly vocals), joined by Lauri Honkola (vocals, DarkWinter), offer us The Rituals of Resilience in 2025 via their new label Noble Demon.
We start with Threads of Blood, which first warms the back of our necks, then shatters them with a cold but jerky rhythm that welcomes sharp leads and violent vocal parts. The choruses are truly unifying, but the solo offers other tonalities, while The Original Wound offers us an epic approach without delay, whether with the majestic keyboards or the virulent Pagan influences. The jerky riffs return quickly, as they do on Hymn for the Fallen, which displays an obvious melancholy, but which is counterbalanced by raw power and violent riffs. The final remains firmly rooted in Gothic influences, but Hymn for the Fallen returns to violence and jerky Swedish basics to define its violence. The catchy accelerations are truly intense, but the track calms down to give way to Starved of Martyrs, where the majestic influences return to present the rhythmic in an aggressive and rather explosive atmosphere, but one that doesn’t last long. Tread With the Ghosts returns with a breather, offering a breathless rhythm that can’t help but make us shake our skulls frantically, but we continue with From the Towers of Ivory, which continues in this devastating approach and remains in the continuity of the band’s frenzy. The refrains are more accessible and singable, but Ritual of Resilience returns to bring polished harmonics and symphonic touches to a raw violence that blends perfectly together. Pyre of Vengeance gets off to a fairly slow start, but the band quickly returns to their roots and becomes more energetic again, while accepting their melodic roots, but Branding of Souls returns to strike with all its power. Keyboards remain an undeniable touch of the Finns’ musical personality, and add perfectly to their fury, just as on The Mourning Shores where they allow them to soften by becoming a power ballad with clear vocals and intense moments.
I’d never listened to Voidfallen before, but The Rituals of Resilience convinced me! Their new album is definitely pleasant, offering both violence and majestic passages!
