A new alliance between Necronomicon Ex Mortis and Bloodfeast Ritual.
To give concrete expression to their devotion to Death Metal, the two American bands offer us a split, which they have happily christened You’ve Got Red On You.
We begin with the thick Soul Annihilation, the first of Bloodfeast Ritual‘s two tracks, which stomps savagely from its opening moments, and doesn’t fail to include some particularly pissed-off drums to complement its aggressive riffs. The Old School mix allows the band to be quite lively, but also oppressive at times, before taking a more haunting approach on Decaying Humanity, a long composition that almost borrows its dark atmosphere from Death/Doom. Bursts of energy punctuate the moment, integrating complex, fast-paced elements for each instrument, particularly the guitars and their furious harmonics, then keyboards carry us through until Necronomicon Ex Mortis takes up the torch. Their first track is The Music Of Eric Zahn, a rather intriguing, ethereal composition with noisy elements that leads into the well-worked Bound In Human Flesh, where every musician is put to great use to turn this torrent of notes into a veritable surge. Leads follow one another between two eruptions of howling, before Unspeakable Swamp Creature takes over with relatively brighter, more luminous sounds, especially on the guitars, creating a real contrast with the darkness of the vocal parts. The composition remains focused on its technicality and raw power, as does Misery, which follows closely on its heels and continues in the same vein, with jerky riffs but also dark, heady harmonics that multiply throughout the track, thus closing the EP.
Necronomicon Ex Mortis and Bloodfeast Ritual all take a similar approach to Death Metal, with a clear focus on technicality. You’ve Got Red On You has just as many Old School influences as modern ones, making it the kind of diverse collaboration we love.
