Three’s a crowd at I Am Your God.
With Trinity, Joonas Roivainen (bass), Atte Autio (drums), Joonas Erkkonen (guitar), Matti Hietala (guitar) and Julius Vetämäjärvi (vocals) continue their partnership with their label Out Of Line Music.
The album opens gently with the eponymous Trinity, an introduction that slowly introduces fairly calm and melodic elements before letting them ignite on Haunting Hell, which marks the arrival of saturation within the rhythm, but also fierce vocal parts. The choruses also feature clean yet motivating vocals, before accelerating on I.A.Y.G. – the band’s name acronym – which immediately sweeps us along in its wave of fury, anchoring the sound further in energetic Metalcore and its effective jerky patterns. Leads add a sometimes playful touch, then we move on to more melancholic tones on Death Row, where harmonics allow the riffs to become even more heady, while the vocalist increases the intensity tenfold. The heavy break will have us shaking our heads before a final chorus, then Part Of The Ocean strikes back with worked guitars that offer piercing tones to accompany the catchy elements at a highly variable pace, making the track quite different at different times. The band grants us a brief respite with the piano intro to Til Death Do Us Part, but the rage soon returns to tint the composition and propel the riffs forward at full speed, all the while benefiting from intense Power Metal influences, especially towards the end. Pyre Of Fears takes another short break, charging along with a similar recipe of raw energy in the verses and softer, sung choruses, before giving way to The Chateau, where the band’s stirring modern Melodic Death roots shine through. Kingdom Cold follows with a coldness and ferocity assumed in its cutting riffs, but the album already reaches its final track with the aptly named Terminus, whose airy melodies blend perfectly with the jerky base before finally fading away into thin air.
For I Am Your God, the recipe remains unchanged: Melodic Death and Metalcore perfectly cohabit to give their compositions that natural aggression. Trinity will undoubtedly live up to fans’ expectations.
