Review 2722 : Axiom Chaos – Primacy Arrival – English

Axiom Chaos comes knocking.

Recently formed by Justin Vølus (vocals, Vølus, Fall Of Gnosis, Maggot Crown) and Ben Vanweelden (instruments, Venomous Echoes, Ceremonic Buryment), the band signs to Comatose Music to unveil their debut album, Primacy Arrival.

The duo attack with The King, I Am, a catchy first composition featuring groovy riffs and Justin‘s vindictive vocals, but also heavy, suffocating tones or, on the contrary, more dissonant ones. This second approach is particularly evident in Primacy Arrival, the chaotic second track which seems to approach Brutal Death more and more, but always with that oppressive, tormented touch that only ceases to allow the arrival of the piano break shortly before the finale. We move on to the savage The Gift of Recognition, where the musicians feed their imbroglio of violence with equally surprising and explosive riffs, but also those moments of total unexpectedness when the sound seems to take a cosmic turn before flaring up again to join Extraterrestrial Necrotic Urge. At first, the composition seems to be made up of nothing but unleashed power at high speed, but a few lighter leads give a more ethereal touch to certain passages or, on the contrary, make them even stranger, such as the moment when bass and drums advance alone until the next riffs, then on to Antediluvian Origin Unknown, where the jerky patterns start up again. The only respite the band gives us is a disquieting yet hypnotic break on this hellish composition, and then the overloaded final finally lets us go to meet Wormhole Pathways of Conquest and its impenetrable clouds of Noise influences. To say that the track is complex would be an understatement, but the musicians return to a few more accessible passages on Exodus Into Oblivion before finally returning to their advanced technicality, allowing them to garnish this final piece with their tenebrous identity and put the finishing touch on it in all its splendor.

Fans of brutality who are not afraid to venture into dissonance will be well served with Axiom Chaos! Primacy Arrival is far from being an accessible album, but it bears witness to the great mastery of the project’s two creators!
