Their last album came out back in 2019, but Brad Fincher (drums), Ruben Rosas (vocals), Dave Spencer (bass), and Marvin Ruiz (guitar, Stabbing) are back with a new EP, Pious Impiety.
Title track Pious Impiety kicks off with a sampled exorcism, but once that’s over, the band hits the ground running, unleashing devastating blast beats, thick riffs, and some of the heaviest, most cavernous vocals on the scene, the band’s trademark sound. The aggressive tone never lets up, complementing perfectly jagged riffing even during the groovy Slam Death-oriented sections, then the tempo accelerates into Mortiferous Dependency, a true weapon of mass destruction that strings together mosh parts and savagely tramples us. Even as the track slows down on its own, it doesn’t falter, crushing us ever harder before speeding up and adding a touch of screaming technicality, after which Advanced Stage Decomposition takes over, picking up where its predecessor left off to deliver violence at varying speeds, while also occasionally offering some shrill harmonics and an overpowering sub-bass before a finale that must have left the drummer with sore muscles.
Even though their absence was felt, Devourment reappeared without warning, churned out three tracks to stir things up, and reclaimed their throne. Pious Impiety clearly shows that nothing can stop this behemoth when it sets its mind to it.
