Review 1373 : Angmodnes – The Weight of Eternity – English

The first album of Angmodnes is coming.

Formed by Y.S. (guitar/bass/vocals, Wilds Forlorn, Apotelesma) and M.V. (drums, Apotelesma, Vanir) in the Netherlands, the band announced the release of The Weight of Eternity in 2022 on Black Lion Records.

The album opens with Weight Of Eternity, the eponymous track, which offers a soft melancholic piano introduction before the saturation kicks in, offering haunting sounds. The massive vocal parts spawn from this slow and heavy wall of sound, followed by clean vocals, and the duo slowly moves forward on this soaring Funeral Doom. Melodic surge peacefully drive us to that mournful piano, and then to Hollow Earth, a track we feel darker, heavier, and more dissonant, but it still lets female choirs take part in despair. The slow and beautiful oppression gives vocals a devastated and seizing playground which ends with a dramatic piano tone, then lets Under Darkened Vaults push us back into darkness with despair-filled riffs. The sound is also more rough, heavier and more dissonant, once again strengthening the oppression developed by the duo on this long track which seems to slow down again until a softer but as intense finale.

There is no doubt that Angmodnes masters its universe. With only three tracks, the duo has made The Weight of Eternity a compendium of despair, darkness and progressive oppression which always ends with a very soft piano. To be followed closely.
