Few questions to Sascha Borchard, vocalist and guitar player for the German Funeral Doom band Adversvm.
Hello and first of all, thank you very much for your time! Could you please introduce yourself and the band Adversvm without using the usual Metal labels, such as “Doom Metal”?
Sascha Borchard (vocals/guitar): Hello, we are Adversvm from Germany. Our permanent members are Fabian (lead guitar), Jessica (bass), Don (keyboard), Jörg (drums) and my name is Sascha (vocals, guitars).
How do you link the name Adversvm to the band’s music identity?
Sascha: Adversvm is the opposite direction and adversary of the demiurge’s stream and his followers.
Vama Marga, your new album, is now out, how do you feel about it? What about the feedback you had?
Sascha: We are very satisfied with the result. The drumming became more precise, the sound quality is better than on Dysangelion and Don has created a new atmosphere with his keyboard sounds. In combination with that all I think Fabian’s lead guitar has more power than in the past. The basic structure of the songs evolved to more variety. Since Vama Marga the songs have more Death Metal parts. Up till now we received a lot of positive feedback.
How would you sum Vama Marga identity up in only three words?
Sascha: Left Hand Path.
How did the composition process happen for Vama Marga? Were there some differences with the previous releases?
Sascha: First I composed and recorded the rhythm guitar for the songs. After that the other instruments followed. That’s the way we always create our music.
What were the guidelines for the artwork, and how do they fit with the music you created?
Sascha: The cover artwork was done by Vhan Artworks and I found it on his webpage. I was mesmerized since the first moment I saw it. It fits very well to our topic about transformation.
Where do you find inspiration to create your music and lyrics?
Sascha: In the satanic faith.
Feind was the first track revealed to introduce the album. Why did you choose this one?
Sascha: Feind combines many different elements of the whole album. Funeral Doom, slow Death Metal and an acoustic passage that leads to a powerful end.
As I said in the review I wrote, you have the ability to melt very heavy and slow riffs with haunting airy tones and massive vocals. How do you keep the balance between everything?
Sascha: That becomes possible in collaboration with people, who feel and understand this type of music.
Maybe you have a favorite song on this album? Or maybe the hardest one to achieve for the album?
Sascha: V.:.O.:.A.:.D is a special song for me because I wrote it a long time before Adversvm was started. Today on Vama Marga it has developed to a heavy song beyond. Furthermore, Vindex is a great hammer of the Antichrist.
Do you think you are still improving yourself as a musician and songwriter?
Sascha: Since the beginning it was important for me to develop the songwriting with every album as you can hear the differences between Aion Sitra Ahra, Dysangelion and Vama Marga. I think we will always have fluid developments in our style. My latest compositions for some future recordings are different again to everything from the past.
I don’t find on the internet any hint of Adversvm playing live, do you consider live shows?
Sascha: Unfortunately we won’t play live gigs in the near future.
Are there any musicians or artists you would like to collaborate with? Whether it is for one song, or maybe more.
Sascha: Not anymore. Once it was Don. Now he joins Adversvm permanently.
If you had to organize a concert for Vama Marga’s release show, with which bands would you love to play with? I let you create a poster with Adversvm headlining and three other bands!
Sascha: Disembowelment, Winter, Thergothon.

Comment associez-vous le nom Adversvm à l’identité musicale du groupe ?
Sascha : Adversvm est la direction opposée et l’adversaire du courant du démiurge et de ses adeptes.
Vama Marga, votre nouvel album, est sorti, comment le ressentez-vous ? Qu’en est-il des réactions que vous avez eues ?
Sascha : Nous sommes très satisfaits du résultat. La batterie est devenue plus précise, la qualité du son est meilleure que sur Dysangelion et Don a créé une nouvelle atmosphère avec ses claviers. En combinaison avec tout cela, je pense que la guitare de Fabian a plus de puissance que par le passé. La structure de base des chansons a évolué vers plus de variété. Depuis Vama Marga, les chansons ont plus de parties Death Metal. Jusqu’à présent, nous avons reçu beaucoup de réactions positives.
Comment résumerais-tu l’identité de Vama Marga en seulement trois mots ?
Sascha : Left Hand Path.
Comment s’est déroulé le processus de composition pour Vama Marga ? Y a-t-il eu des différences avec les précédents albums ?
Sascha : J’ai d’abord composé et enregistré la guitare rythmique pour les chansons. Ensuite, les autres instruments ont suivi. C’est toujours ainsi que nous créons notre musique.
Quelles étaient les lignes directrices pour la pochette, et comment s’accordent-elles avec la musique que vous avez créée ?
Sascha : La pochette a été réalisée par Vhan Artworks et je l’ai trouvée sur sa page web. J’ai été fasciné dès que je l’ai vue. Elle correspond très bien à notre thème sur la transformation.
Où trouvez-vous l’inspiration pour créer votre musique et vos paroles ?

Sascha : Cela devient possible en collaborant avec des gens qui ressentent et comprennent ce type de musique.
Peut-être as-tu une chanson préférée sur cet album ? Ou peut-être la plus difficile à réaliser pour l’album ?
Sascha : V. :.O. :.A. :.D est une chanson spéciale pour moi parce que je l’ai écrite longtemps avant qu’Adversvm ne soit créé. Aujourd’hui, sur Vama Marga, elle s’est développée pour devenir une chanson plus lourde. De plus, Vindex est un grand marteau de l’Antéchrist.
Penses-tu que tu continues à t’améliorer en tant que musicien et compositeur ?
Sascha : Depuis le début, il était important pour moi de développer le songwriting à chaque album, comme on peut l’entendre entre Aion Sitra Ahra, Dysangelion et Vama Marga. Je pense que nous aurons toujours des évolutions fluides dans notre style. Mes dernières compositions pour de futurs enregistrements sont encore différentes de tout ce qui s’est fait dans le passé.
Je n’ai pas trouvé sur internet de traces montrant qu’Adversvm jouait en live, envisagez-vous de faire des concerts ?
Sascha : Malheureusement, nous ne ferons pas de concerts dans un futur proche.
Y a-t-il des musiciens ou des artistes avec lesquels vous aimeriez collaborer ? Que ce soit pour une chanson, ou peut-être plus.
Sascha : Plus maintenant. Autrefois, c’était Don. Maintenant, il a rejoint Adversvm de façon permanente.
