Few questions to King Aleister Satan, vocalist of the Finnish band King Satan, before their show at Paris’ Backstage by the Mills.
Hello and first of all, thank you very much for your time! First of all, how do you feel?
King Aleister Satan: Really excited first, like you said, first time in France. So to be coupled this year, I don’t know what to expect because I have no idea how many French people know us. We just can tag along with Gothminister today in the hopes of gaining new listeners, new followers with France. So Paris is really exciting and I hope there will be some turnover today.
Raven: Yeah, we know you are really good because when we went to the fest, he spent all the journey listening to the songs.
Deathliger: I created a playlist to go to Hellfest by car and I did a playlist made of King Satan.
King Aleister Satan: That is perfect. I think this is our biggest fan in France. I’m honored and thank you for the work, for your help. So at least we have a couple of people at the show today watching King Satan.
Tonight is the third show of the Pandemonium tour, how were the previous ones?
King Aleister Satan: Yeah, this is the third show. Now we played first in Zoetermeer in the Netherlands and Essen, Germany. Both were fucking fantastic. Audience was on fire. It was a really nice show.
Raven: I’ve heard that the public in Germany is really quiet during the concert. Is it true? Because in France we are known for being demonstrative and energetic.
King Aleister Satan: Well, yesterday we played in Essen during the first show. I mean, first two first songs with King Satan and the audience was very quiet at the start. But because, I think, most of them didn’t know who we were. So we started, we are light of engaging live, but we want to communicate with the audience. When the show progressed, the audience started being loud in the last part of the concert, the German audience was also very goosebumps stuff. And same with the Netherlands and I keep hearing the same things everybody says that No, no, our, your audience is not usual. It is loud. So I’m looking very much forward though for us. If you say, let’s see if French people can compete with the earlier ones.
Yeah, I think we can prove it. Could you please introduce yourself and the band King Satan without using the usual musical labels?
King Aleister Satan: Yeah. The Industrial Metal kind of invented by the promoters because we have, since we have effects, we have beats and stuff like that. Well, I think it’s a good roof concept but we ourselves like to call ourselves our genre Metal Disco because we have strong Metal aspects there. And we also want our music to be danceable. You know, that’s why the Disco aspect and Industrial Metal there is kind of implied, it’s a roof concept underwear with a Death Metal Disco last Industrial Metal. That’s pretty interesting.
The name King Satan is pretty evocative of Satanism, which is definitely something present in the song tracks and lyrics, how did you decide to focus on this topic?
King Aleister Satan: Well, I have an obsession towards the archetype of Satan, the devil imagery. So, Satanism is only one part of it. The way I deal with the devil of Satan archetype is that I don’t, our listeners don’t need to be a satanist, they don’t need to be Satan worshipers. I am kind of using this as a symbolic platform for everybody to project their own hopes, fears, whatever the devil inside them, whether it’s a universal force or symbolic force. And this is something that fascinates me, not only in philosophy, theology, but also in entertainment, in movies, in literature, in Lord of the Rings trilogy, there is its own devil. So everywhere there are devilish figures and this is something ever since I was a small child, I’d be very much fascinated. I wanna explore all of the size of it.
So do you feel comfortable about openly talking about satanism or about talking about the Church of Satan or the TST?
King Aleister Satan: Yeah, I’m almost comfortable talking about Satanism. When it comes to my view of Satanism, I am very much influenced by the Church of Satan. But over the years I have started developing the view to a kind of different direction. I still bow, I’m honoring the Church of Satan as it started to popularize the whole Satanism concept. But for me, I’m adding the things from another ideology most importantly, probably chaos magic tradition and I’m combining chaos magic tradition together with Satanism. And then I am very much influenced by Thelema, you know, Aleister Crowley is Thelema. And then I also kind of there’s this interesting thinker Carl Gustav Jung who offers a very psychological aspect for this. So over the years, even with the King Satan and lyrics and stuff like that, that’s what I meant before that I don’t repress any of the Satanism movements. I am trying to develop my own interpretation. It, but I honor all the traditions regarding Satanism because they’re offering the start where the top of it. And one of the King Satan on this is every satanist. They have to form their own image of their devils and gods don’t listen to authorities. You can take influences but it’s eventually up to your own experience, how to make the reality.
Your latest album, Occult Spiritual Anarchy, came out last year, how do you feel about it? How was the feedback?
King Aleister Satan: It was kind of a level up in so many ways compared to the other. When it comes to the feedback, this was the first time we hit the good charts in Finland in Germany, the singles, The Faces of the Devil, The Pagan Satan, they hit the charts once before in Finland, we did that. But now in Germany too. I was “what the fuck is happening?” And we got so many concerts, and even this tour is because of this album. We are now literally promoting the Spiritual Anarchy album. Even if it was released last year. This is the leg of that album and it was an album that brought the band closer together because we made it much more closer than before COVID gave us so much time to, you know, develop our act and we started developing much more into the metal side of the electronic industrial stuff. But overall, we are still processing what is happening. We don’t really, what the fuck are we really in Paris at the moment? So it’s not a dream.
What are your influences to create your band’s music?
King Aleister Satan: Oh It’s my ultimate number one influence has always been The Prodigy, the prodigy. And also I wanted to combine the Death Metal side heaviness into the Black Metal heaviness into this kind of electronic stuff. And my first idea was what happens if I combine Eurodance, The Prodigy and this side, and something like a Black Metal world like Barathrum Finnish Black Metal band and this kind of sound together and I want to see what happens, it started developing from there. Of course, the Aggrotech influences, they were much more stronger in the past like Suicide Commando, Combichrist, Hocico. And then the other part was like yeah, but I mentioned Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Deathstars. And we are combining things that usually nobody wants to combine. We are making, you know, a new kind of soup here. We want to, they’re down on the general establishment.
Did you already begin to work on new material? What can you tell us about the upcoming stuff?
King Aleister Satan: Yeah, we just recorded a new album right before the tour. So when we get back home, we will finalize our new stuff for sure.
What can you tell us about the upcoming stuff about the influence or something like this?
King Aleister Satan: Oh, well, upcoming stuff, the new album, it will be kind of… it’s a very, very heavy. I kind of developed for 10 years the lyrical concept and I started to develop the lyrical concept even before the first King Satan album and it’s very personal, very kind of meaningful for me, lyrically speaking. And for the band also, we all put our best effort there and we are kind of feeling that we are constantly developing our stuff and developing as musicians and creative outlets. So I think it will be the most holistic version of King Satan you will be hearing.
How do you make a balance between the band’s visual performance and music?
King Aleister Satan: Well, everything comes very naturally. We don’t really think of it, we don’t have much bigger meetings and we don’t think like that. We are just like, “hey, today we do this”, it might be wrong. Well, who knows, let’s try that and we just try things sometimes they work. We test things, sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t and we want it to be a little bit raw, the raw energy of Rock’n’Roll there. We don’t even ourselves, spontaneity is some kind of a strength, you know.
Are you doing some improvisation during your show?
King Aleister Satan: Maybe, sometimes, yes about it usually comes when we have a longer sets, when we are headlining our own shows. Then we have more time to do improvisational stuff. But with the supporting stuff we’ll see. We’ll see.
We never saw King Satan on stage before, what can we expect of tonight’s show?
King Aleister Satan: Oh, you gonna expect that Metal Disco in the form of Industrial Metal array of Rock’n’Roll is we just wanna go there and we wanna unleash our inner selves and we hope that it will touch you too, but that’s what we do on the stage. We hope it kind of spreads like a disease there. So we are very excited about it to see if that happens.
Do you think your stage outfit adds something to the global performance? How did you create it?
King Aleister Satan: Well, same way, we are developing the show that I’m getting this crazy idea about okay, like now I’m having a crown of thorns of Jesus of Nazareth, not now in the interview but on stage. And then, I’m wearing disco glasses together with that and then I have a royal jacket there. So I wanted to make it very trashy, tasteless form of thing. I’m hearing in my head that you can’t do that and then I know I must do that.
If you had to pick one guest musician for your next single, who would you choose and why?
King Aleister Satan: Tom Waits. Tom Waits from America. Best musician, artist, and vocalist for me.
Last and funny question: which dish would you compare King Satan’s music with?
King Aleister Satan: Well, we went into this restaurant earlier where it was a buffet. I took sushi, French fries and a steak. And my band mates were “you can’t do that! You can’t mix French fries with sushi!” I’m like saying, well, this is our band. Accept it. This is King Satan! This one tastes good. Admit it. If you don’t admit it, you are just lying to yourself.
(laughs) So sorry, you’re just kidding me. And so I have a personal question because I love pets. I have three cats. And so, do you love pets?
King Aleister Satan: Yeah, I have two goats and I have several sheeps. We have several horses in our farm. Me and my girlfriend, we are having a farm. We are working on a farm. It’s not yet ours, but in the future it will be ours. We are working there now. So we have chickens, we have several cats, many cats, not one dog at the moment. But they are at the farm now. Of course, I love them.
So we can say you are a gentleman farmer.
King Aleister Satan: Maybe. But the secret is there that actually it’s my girlfriend who is doing the farming. I’m just, you know, I’m the crazy artist there who just happens to live on the farm.
Yes, you’re crazy. And that’s really good. That was the last question for me, so thank you very much for your time and your music, maybe you have some last words for your French audience?

Bonjour et tout d’abord, merci de nous accorder de ton temps ! Tout d’abord, comment te sens-tu ?
King Aleister Satan : Je suis très excité, comme vous l’avez dit, c’est la première fois que je viens en France. Je ne sais pas à quoi m’attendre parce que je n’ai aucune idée du nombre de Français qui nous connaissent. Nous pouvons juste accompagner Gothminister aujourd’hui dans l’espoir de gagner de nouveaux auditeurs, de nouveaux adeptes en France. Paris est donc très excitant, et nous espérons qu’il y aura du chiffre aujourd’hui.
Raven : Oui, nous savons que vous êtes vraiment bons parce que lorsque nous sommes allés au Hellfest, il a passé tout le trajet à écouter les chansons.
Deathliger : J’ai créé une playlist pour aller au Hellfest en voiture et j’ai fait une playlist de King Satan.
King Aleister Satan : C’est parfait. Je pense que tu es notre plus grand fan en France. Je suis honoré et je vous remercie pour votre travail, pour votre aide. Au moins, nous avons quelques personnes qui assistent au spectacle aujourd’hui et qui regardent King Satan.
Ce soir, c’est le troisième concert de la tournée Pandemonium, comment se sont passés les précédents ?
King Aleister Satan : Oui, c’est le troisième concert. Nous avons d’abord joué à Zoetermeer aux Pays-Bas et à Essen en Allemagne. Les deux ont été fantastiques. Le public était en feu. C’était vraiment un bon concert.
J’ai entendu dire que le public en Allemagne était très calme pendant le concert. Est-ce vrai ? Parce qu’en France, nous sommes connus pour être démonstratifs et énergiques.
King Aleister Satan : Eh bien, hier, nous avons joué à Essen pendant le premier concert. Je veux dire, les deux premières chansons avec King Satan et le public était très calme au début. Mais parce que, je pense, la plupart d’entre eux ne savaient pas qui nous étions. Donc nous avons commencé, nous sommes peu engageants en live, mais, vous savez, nous voulons communiquer avec le public. Quand le concert a progressé, le public a commencé à être bruyant, et dans la dernière partie du concert, le public allemand avait aussi la chair de poule. Il en va de même pour les Pays-Bas, et j’entends toujours les mêmes choses : « Non, non, notre public n’est pas habituel. Il est bruyant.” J’ai donc hâte de voir ce qui se passera pour nous. Voyons si les Français peuvent rivaliser avec les autres.
Oui, je pense que nous pouvons le prouver. Peux-tu te présenter et présenter le groupe King Satan sans utiliser les étiquettes musicales habituelles ?
King Aleister Satan : Oui. Le Metal Industriel a été inventé par les promoteurs parce que nous avons des effets, des rythmes et des choses comme ça. Je pense que c’est un bon concept, mais nous préférons nous appeler notre genre Metal Disco parce que nous avons de forts aspects Metal. Et nous voulons aussi que notre musique soit dansante. Tu sais, c’est pour ça que l’aspect Disco et le Metal Industriel sont un peu implicites, c’est un concept en sous-vêtements avec un Death Metal Disco et du Metal Industriel en dernier lieu. C’est assez intéressant.
Le nom King Satan est assez évocateur du satanisme, qui est bien présent dans les chansons et les paroles.
King Aleister Satan : Eh bien, je suis obsédé par l’archétype de Satan, l’imagerie du diable. Le satanisme n’est donc qu’un aspect de la question. La façon dont je traite l’archétype du diable, de Satan, est que je n’ai pas… nos auditeurs n’ont pas besoin d’être des satanistes, ils n’ont pas besoin d’être des adorateurs de Satan. Je me sers en quelque sorte de cette plateforme symbolique pour que chacun puisse y projeter ses propres espoirs, ses propres peurs, le diable qui est en lui, qu’il s’agisse d’une force universelle ou d’une force symbolique. C’est quelque chose qui me fascine, non seulement en philosophie, en théologie, mais aussi dans le divertissement, dans les films, dans la littérature, dans la trilogie du Seigneur des Anneaux, il y a son propre diable. Partout, il y a des figures diaboliques et c’est quelque chose qui me fascine depuis que je suis tout petit. Je veux en explorer toutes les dimensions.
Te sens-tu à l’aise pour parler ouvertement du satanisme, de l’Église de Satan ou de la TST ?
King Aleister Satan : Oui, je suis presque à l’aise pour parler du satanisme. En ce qui concerne ma vision du satanisme, je suis très influencé par l’Église de Satan. Mais au fil des ans, j’ai commencé à développer mon point de vue dans une direction différente. Je salue toujours l’Église de Satan, car c’est elle qui a commencé à populariser tout le concept du satanisme. Mais pour moi, j’ajoute des éléments d’une autre idéologie, et surtout, probablement la tradition de la magie du chaos, et je combine la tradition de la magie du chaos avec le satanisme. Et puis je suis très influencé par Thelema, vous savez, Aleister Crowley est Thelema. Et puis il y a aussi ce penseur intéressant, Carl Gustav Jung, qui offre un aspect très psychologique à tout cela. Au fil des années, même avec King Satan, les paroles et les choses comme ça, c’est ce que je voulais dire avant, que je ne réprime aucun des mouvements satanistes. J’essaie de développer ma propre interprétation. Mais j’honore toutes les traditions concernant le satanisme parce qu’elles en sont le point de départ. Et l’un des points de vue de King Satan à ce sujet est que chaque sataniste… Ils doivent former leur propre image de leurs démons et de leurs dieux, et ne pas écouter les autorités. Vous pouvez prendre des influences, mais c’est finalement votre propre expérience qui fait la réalité.
Votre dernier album, Occult Spiritual Anarchy, est sorti l’année dernière. Quels ont été les retours ?
King Aleister Satan : C’était une sorte de niveau supérieur à bien des égards par rapport aux autres. Les singles, The Faces of the Devil, The Pagan Satan, ont déjà atteint les charts en Finlande, c’est ce que nous avons fait. Mais maintenant, en Allemagne aussi. Je me suis dit : « Qu’est-ce qui se passe ? » Et nous avons eu tellement de concerts, et même cette tournée est due à cet album. Nous faisons littéralement la promotion de l’album Spiritual Anarchy. Même s’il est sorti l’année dernière. C’est la suite de cet album et c’est un album qui a rapproché le groupe parce que nous l’avons rendu beaucoup plus proche qu’avant que le COVID ne nous donne beaucoup de temps pour, tu sais, développer notre groupe et nous avons commencé à nous développer beaucoup plus du côté Metal que du côté Industrial et Electronique. Mais globalement, nous sommes toujours en train d’assimiler ce qui se passe. Nous ne sommes pas vraiment… est-ce qu’on est à Paris en ce moment ? Ce n’est donc pas un rêve.

Avez-vous déjà commencé à travailler sur de nouveaux morceaux ? Que pouvez-vous nous dire sur ce que vous allez faire ?
King Aleister Satan : Oui, nous avons enregistré un nouvel album juste avant la tournée. Donc quand nous rentrerons chez nous, nous finaliserons nos nouveaux morceaux, c’est sûr.
Qu’est-ce que tu peux nous dire à propos de l’album à venir, à propos de l’influence ou quelque chose comme ça ?
King Aleister Satan : Oh, eh bien, les choses à venir, le nouvel album, ce sera une sorte de… c’est très, très lourd. J’ai en quelque sorte développé le concept des paroles pendant 10 ans, et j’ai commencé à développer ce concept avant même le premier album de King Satan, et c’est très personnel, très significatif pour moi, au niveau des paroles. Et pour le groupe aussi, nous avons tous donné le meilleur de nous-mêmes et nous avons l’impression d’être constamment en train de développer notre matériel, de nous développer en tant que musiciens et en tant qu’outils créatifs. Je pense donc que ce sera la version la plus holistique de King Satan que vous entendrez.
Comment trouvez-vous l’équilibre entre la performance visuelle et la musique du groupe ?
King Aleister Satan : Eh bien, tout vient très naturellement. Nous n’y pensons pas vraiment, nous n’avons pas de grandes réunions et nous ne pensons pas comme ça. Nous nous disons simplement : « Hé, aujourd’hui nous faisons ceci”, ça pourrait être une erreur. Eh bien, qui sait, essayons cela et nous essayons les choses, parfois elles marchent. Nous testons des choses, parfois elles fonctionnent, parfois non, et nous voulons que ce soit un peu brut, l’énergie brute du Rock’n’Roll. Nous ne sommes pas nous-mêmes, la spontanéité est une sorte de force, tu sais.
Faites-vous de l’improvisation pendant vos concerts ?
King Aleister Satan : Peut-être, parfois, oui, mais c’est généralement quand nous avons un set plus long, quand nous sommes en tête d’affiche de nos propres concerts. Nous avons alors plus de temps pour improviser. Mais pour les premières parties, on verra. Nous verrons.
Nous n’avons jamais vu King Satan sur scène, à quoi pouvons-nous nous attendre ce soir ?
King Aleister Satan : Oh, vous pouvez vous attendre à du Metal Disco sous la forme d’un Metal Industriel qui s’apparente à du Rock’n’Roll. Nous voulons juste y aller et libérer notre moi intérieur et nous espérons que cela vous touchera aussi, mais c’est ce que nous faisons sur scène. Nous espérons que cela se répandra comme une maladie. Nous sommes donc très excités à l’idée de voir si cela se produit.
Penses-tu que votre tenue de scène ajoute quelque chose à la performance globale ? Comment l’as-tu créée ?
King Aleister Satan : Eh bien, de la même manière que nous développons le spectacle, j’ai eu cette idée folle, comme maintenant j’ai une couronne d’épines de Jésus de Nazareth, pas maintenant mais sur scène. Et puis, je porte des lunettes disco avec ça et puis j’ai une veste royale. Je voulais que ce soit très vulgaire et de mauvais goût. J’entends dans ma tête qu’on ne peut pas faire ça, mais je sais que je dois le faire.
Si tu devais choisir un musicien invité pour votre prochain single, qui choisirais-tu et pourquoi ?
King Aleister Satan : Tom Waits. Tom Waits d’Amérique. Le meilleur musicien, artiste et chanteur pour moi.
Dernière question amusante : à quel plat comparerais-tu la musique de King Satan ?
King Aleister Satan : Eh bien, nous sommes allés tout à l’heure dans un restaurant où il y avait un buffet. J’ai pris des sushis, des frites et un steak. Et les membres de mon groupe ont dit : « Tu ne peux pas faire ça ! Tu ne peux pas mélanger des frites avec des sushis ! » Je leur ai dit : « C’est notre groupe. Acceptez-le. C’est King Satan !” Celui-ci a un bon goût. Admettez-le. Si tu ne l’admets pas, tu te mens à toi-même.
(rires) Désolé, j’ai cru que tu te moquais de moi. J’ai une question personnelle parce que j’adore les animaux. J’ai trois chats. Alors, aimes-tu les animaux de compagnie ?
King Aleister Satan : Oui, j’ai deux chèvres et plusieurs moutons. Nous avons plusieurs chevaux dans notre ferme. Moi et ma copine, nous avons une ferme. Nous travaillons sur une ferme. Elle n’est pas encore à nous, mais dans le futur elle sera à nous. Nous y travaillons actuellement. Nous avons des poulets, plusieurs chats, beaucoup de chats, pas un seul chien pour l’instant. Mais ils sont maintenant à la ferme. Bien sûr, je les adore.
On peut donc dire que vous êtes un gentleman farmer.
King Aleister Satan : Peut-être. Mais le secret, c’est qu’en fait, c’est ma petite amie qui s’occupe de l’agriculture. Je suis juste, je suis l’artiste fou qui se trouve à vivre dans la ferme.
Oui, tu es fou. Et c’est vraiment bien. C’était ma dernière question, alors merci beaucoup de nous avoir accordé de ton temps et pour ta musique, est-ce que tu as quelques derniers mots pour le public français ?
King Aleister Satan : Bonjour la France. On se voit aujourd’hui à Paris et la semaine prochaine à… comment on dit ? Pagney ? Pagney ? Oui. A la semaine prochaine. La semaine prochaine ! J’ai hâte d’y être. Première fois en France, King Satan viva la France.
