Review 2042 : Saevus Finis – Facilis Descensus Averno – English

Enter the cellar of Saevus Finis.

Created by Mortvorvm (vocals, Wells Valley), Sangvis Aestvs (bass, Concealment) and MCMXII (drums), the band signs to Transcending Obscurity Records for the release of Facilis Descendus Averno, their debut album.

The band immediately plunges us into dissonance with Scourge of Humanity, its first track, which throws all instruments to a lively tempo. The oppressive cloud of darkness welcomes the massive unhealthy howls as it continues its march at variable speed towards the ominous Aeons of Spiritual Starvation, whose rumbling bass skilfully mingles with howling leads. The dark anxiety-inducing atmosphere regularly allows for explosions of fury before gradually disappearing, leaving Thou Hast Destroyed Thyself expose us to a torrent of equally crushing savage sounds, all the while retaining its worked patterns and regular strikes. Unfulfillment immediately follows, combining the same hellish elements to fuel its obscure mix where vocals take up more and more space, before literally unleashing their fury on Overrun by Pests, an as complex as stunning track, which doesn’t hesitate to let terrifying saturation fly over its double-kick roll. The band follow up with Corporeal Malfeasent and slightly more ethereal sounds, before returning to their thick, impenetrable dissonance punctuated by morbid vocal interventions. The band picks up without delay with Those Who Aid and Abet and its brutal introduction, followed by the usual as complex as macabre fog, completed by rocky vociferations, then the sound slows down on the final before Corpse of Hope unveils its martial approach that will give birth to fury. The intensity drops again towards the middle of the track, but the sound becomes more suffocating, especially on vocals and leads, which resume their charge until Execration, a hazy interlude where only one voice reaches us. The album comes to a close with Facilis Descensus Averno, the self-titled composition in which the band unleashes their fury to couple savagery with throbbing sounds for an asphyxiating result.

If you like feeling oppressed, observed and struggling to breathe, Saevus Finis is the perfect band for you. Facilis Descensus Averno is a veritable mass of darkness from which you can’t escape unscathed.
